TS12 out of date items

Folks, I only got ts 12 about 2 months ago. The out of date tab shows over 30000 items!! Is it essential to download all of them? These are just for built in assets, not just addons, which I have very few? You would think that Auran would release a zip file, for those later purchasers of ts12 to download these in one shot, instead of wasting my FCT on downloading these in batches - the content manager stalls most of the time and I end up restarting them all again. all advice appreciated!

Hi,

This is a common misconception. You checked the Content Manager for updated items and not your own game. Start TS12 and check that number on the "Content Updates" button: Thats the number of items that YOU have on your PC that have updates. All the other items are updates of items on the DLS, so basicly all new items for you.

For those items you have that have updates: You dont need to update them, unless you plan to do multiplayer. My advice is to get them anyway. Just click on that button within TS12 and select "download all". Then minimize that thingie so it disappears up to your bar at the top of your screen and just go play with trainz; it will download the updates while you are doing other stuff and it does not count against your daily maximum of 100mb without a FCT.

Oknotsen,

Man, you got it in one! That is exactly what I have been doing - assuming all out of date items referred to my own game. I have used the one in-game as well and that is upto date.
Thank you for taking the time to help me with this - I am good to go now and feeling relaxed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alternatively, in Content Manager, add the search filter "Location:Local":

Hahaha Clancy!
You'll never guess what I was doing for a good while ^^?
Updating all my "Out of Date" content :o
Consequently I now have lots of totally useless stuff in TS12 :(
A great way to trash your shiny TS12 install with TS10 content freshly added.
Oh well...

Peghorse, here's your buddy!!! In the same boat! I guess it was too much to expect the content manager to only advise us of content updates relative to our own installations! Ah well, you learn something new everyday!

It is a piece of software, not a self thinking entity.
If you add "Location = Local" to the filter, it will tell you which local items are out of date.

What it basicly does, is tell you the answer to the question you ask it. If you (unknowingly) ask it the wrong question, you dont get the answer to the question you had in mind.
Learn its language and you understand its answers and figure out how to ask the right questions ;).

Spike hit right on the head! :D

I saved this a a filter (tab) so all I do is check the tab in CM, every time I download stuff from the DLS, instead of downloading within the Trainz program which is more cumbersome.

*puts idiot cap on and raises hand in the air...
ummm...
Oki doki then, how do we delete all the useless stuffs?
(rather than disable).

Since it does not eat or drink anything, I would say dont bother.

If you downloaded anything else besides these "updates", it will be hell to figure out what is and what is not part of something else, except maybe for the delete and re-download method.

Why oh why is the content manager and content updater offline so much - like about 70% of the time, 2010 works fine? Just a gripe , Hope its not me and my computer!

George

It may be partly due to your system, although if it happens at weekends, there have been some strange server problems at weekends.

1) Obsolete = True; Built-in = False; Apply
2) Select all, right-click, Show Asset Versions; Confirm; View in Main List
3) Add filters Obsolete = False; Out of date = False; Apply
4) Save search filter as "Local Versions"
5) Set search filter as Built-in = True; Apply
6) Select all, right-click, Show Asset Versions; Confirm; View in Main List
7) Set search filter as "Saved filter = Local Versions; AND NOT; Asset KUID = (do not touch this line)"; Apply

You know have every single asset that was installed as an update to an asset that was not built-in.

No so sure why you quoted me for that.

Are you trying to contradict my writing or prove it, since those 7 steps will result in also having those items that have multiple versions and that you did want to have/keep, including depencies of those items that also have multiple versions... which is basicly what I wrote without the technical details.

I assume I am misunderstanding you or that you wanted to quote the post above me.

Over time I've downloaded a number of routes/sessions to try them out but subsequently
deleted the route/sessions if I did not care for them. The deletion process seems to only
delete the kuids for the route-name and session-name(s) but not the content that was
downloaded to populate them.

This means that I have a number of items installed (local) that are not used by anything -
i.e. there is nothing dependent on them. I would like to identify and delete these
redundant assets but can't seem to find a method of globally identifying them with a Content
Manager query/filter.

The reasons I'd like to get-rid are to ensure than my local Trainz database can be parsed as
efficiently as possible but mostly to save storage space, since I have Trainz installed on
an SSD.

The SSD is 240Gb and contains O/S & programs only - except that it stores not only the
Trainz program but also its data. As those who use an SSD know, the time taken to load a
route/session and to change driver views is dramatically improved by having the Trainz asset
data read from an SSD.

I have TS2010 & TS2012. The former is just under 40Gb and the latter is around 33GB. (I
use TS2010 for UK routes and TS2012 for everything else). Along with the O/S and programs
this takes up 129Gb of my SSD. There is still plenty left of the 240 GB but how long will
that last? For example I have, but have not installed, Murchison and Cabon City.

So, I would like to tidy up the SSD; redundant Trainz data looks like a good candidate.
But not if I have to examine every asset individually to see whether or not anything else is
dependent on it.

There is a category "dependent assets" that can be seen in the drop down list when an asset is right-clicked. If it is greyed-out I assume that asset has nothing dependent on it so could be deleted. Unfortunately there is no filter value "has dependencies" otherwise a simple query of "built-in + false" + "has dependencies = false" would do the job.....

If anyone has devised a query method for identifying redundant assets in one go, I would be
very grateful to know of it.

Lataxe the tidy.

You probably already thought of this, but in case you didnt:

Once a week, I set a filter on "Location = local, Obsolete = true, Build-in = false" and delete all those items.
With all the updated rolling stock, this quickly goes past 25mb in space cleaned. Sure, it aint gigs at a time, but it helps, especially if you never did it yet.

If you are really desperate to clear disk space when you choose a route to delete, before deleting it, right click on it, dependencies, show in main Window, then you will have to check every one to see if it is needed by anything else, in many cases they are and delete the rest assuming they are not built in, easier than going through everything. Of course you may well find that the next route you download adds a lot of them back again, ok I guess if you are not on a download data cap.

If you want to save space on TS12, start by deleting local obsoletes, reduce the backups to 1 or even 0 days and keep an eye on the contents of the cache folder, which should normally be emptied on closing however sometimes is isn't.
2010 similar but substitute trash folder for backups and just delete the contents if there are any.
