Quite Odd Things On DLS

Maybe it is just me but there are some really odd things appearing on the DLS. Given the extremely odd pictures I do not even take a look at them. If these are hidden gems then I am missing something. We will never know since it is socially irresponsible to post examples related to critical comment.

Agreed, I suspect these are due to probably gadgets user who have no experience in what "Proper" Trainz is actually about and using the DLS as a file store, not much room for files on a pad, pod, tablet or whatever. I'm not sure that some of the titles are exactly appropriate either.

If you mean the stuff by 'mrjdp' (kuid 683549), then I agree with boleyd, this person (I can only think maybe a 10 year old or about that), has
been uploading to the dls, what can only be described as 'excreta' to put it politely.

The dls seems to be struggling badly as it is, without this sort of content to wade through.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I don't believe in all this 'PC/be nice to every idiot on the planet' nonsense, I speak my mind & I speak as I see it.

I agree with you Blackwatch, there is a social and moral line that any human being who has been raised properly should not cross .

Once downloaded a "route", actually the description turned out to be longer than the route. It claimed to be the Queensland Railways Bell branch, what should have been a route of at least 20kms was just a stretch of track on a 3 board length with a few trees and some texture. As the author styles himself "QGR Commissioner", that is head of Queensland Government Railways, I guess not too surprising!

A few appeared today, what goes through some peoples minds is boggling ...............
This is one of them

"The wreck of the century" by caseyjones3 kuid 687734:100059.

An unhealthy imagination that could be upsetting to anyone who has experienced a real railway accident.

There is only one thing by MRJDP, it's called Really Cool Land. I don't know what it is so I am going to try DLing it.

G'day All, I made a post about this some time ago (http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?88341-DLS-Mess} the response from WindWalkr was "One man's trash, and all that.." so I guess N3V don't give a brass razoo about it.

I've been following this thread and also noticing the uploads appearing in the Routes section of the DLS. At the risk of sounding Nixonian, I would like to say this about that.

First, while we might question whether some of these uploads have any serious value, there seems to be no malice behind them. I think they are the product of a few pre-adolescents who received Trainz as a Christmas, birthday, or other gift and are revelling in the power to actually put something they have made on the Internet whatever it is.

Second, while it is tempting to suggest that Auran/N3V ban or intercept such posts, we have to be careful what we wish for. Whenever a board of censors is appointed to control annoying material from "other people," they always end up controlling "annoying" material from ourselves, because their mission is control and they seek to do it well. It always ends up as a bad bargain in the end.

FWIW, I say abide it. It does no real harm and their "routes" can be passed over in a few seconds, unless I have really missed something. And who knows, one of these folks may end up being TS2020's content creation guru.

G'day All, you do have a point Bernie but today I saw a route (British Midlands <kuid:695503:100001> build 3.6) the picture in CM looked good so I downloaded it into TS12 but there were three missing assets:-
Unknown Location: <kuid:523:19721146>
Unknown Location: <kuid:523:19721148>
Unknown Location: <kuid:523:19721149>
Now these I believe are N3V assets and I have all the built ins from TS10 and the route packs Murchison/S&C etc so I opened it in surveyor and guess what, first thing I noticed...NO GRIDS...this was obviously NOT created in TS12 but probably I pad or similar but there is nothing to differentiate it from anything else. It has build 3.6 as has TS12, why couldn't the build reflect the source better EG:- 3.6m for mac or 3.6i for I pad/pod, would this be so hard. It seems that N3V does not think about the effect these things have on other users and the extra load put on the DLS with people downloading useless items then having to delete them.
Just my thoughts and for those who are into MAC, I pad/pod whatever that's great for them but indicate the origin of the route/session and here is where N3V have not thought ahead about the implications.

UPDATE:- There are more routes with these same assets missing, no grids and the compass and camera act wierd (you can go right under the terrain?) does any one know what is going on and what these missing kuid's are?

UPDATE 2:- Having looked at these routes again it would seem it is possible that the editing was done in a layer other than the route layer and only the layer edited was saved, is this possible? I will try and post some screen shots, it's really wierd!!!

Isn't British Midlands an original built in route?

I agree it is difficult to decide what constitutes an "acceptable" level of quality and what doesn't. A long route that is operationally interesting might be textured with plain one or two colours MSTS style, not really up to the current standards but do you bar something that people might otherwise enjoy?

Maybe there needs to be a separate sub-section on the DLS for all the stuff coming in from the gadgets, maybe also a "Beginner's" category where contributions from new members with (say) less than ten uploads could be placed so potential downloaders are aware it might be a bit amateurish (or then again, not).

The very silly routes are more of a curiosity. If we get too many then they will need N3V scrutiny. For me, a more serious, issue is when a route is published as ok for TS2012 and it contains low resolution textures and old style trees. So, for me, the children's routes, and TS2012 routes that use Ts2004 assets, simply clog the system. I enjoy the DLS since it holds so many gems. But if the junk level rises too high it becomes less pleasent looking for those gems.

I have to agree that what is one man's trash is another's treasure. Keep in mind that everyone has to start somewhere, and even the best creators started out with what they would probably consider crap now.

Just watch the forums. I try to stick with stuff from the top creators. We know that Dermmy and Scratchy have some great routes in the pipe, JR and RRMods (although right now they hate that I am using them in the same sentence) have great rolling stock and locos, Bendorsey for bridges, Dave Snow for the buildings, Euphod and btvfd for reskins..... I look at the black pages from time to time to see what is out there and find gems here and there, poo here and there. If I don't like it, I just don't download it.

Thanks for mentioning my work! I do try to provide a healthy balance of Poo for the community! Too bad you weren't around when I was working on my P.O.O.P line of assets...:hehe:

After reading this forum thread I would have to agree with a lot of posts and I only have two SW1500 reskins that I've even uploaded. I've seen the locos and cars from Jointed Rail and have bought a couple of their payware engines, which are exceedingly well detailed. RRMods has some great freeware and payware content, not to mention their latest realease of two SD60s and a PRR Tuscan SD45. I would highly reccommend PaulzTrainz as well, he has some excellent payware models. I have a fair number of btvfd's reskins and I really enjoy the quality of content they have produced. I only hope that one day, I'll be able to have good quality and detailed locomotives of my own creation for Trainz.
