Industry Training Session?

Hi All,

I'm curious if there is a good, all around, industry training session someone could point me to (could be built-in or freeware download). I know there are some tutorials, but even after running through them, I find myself at a loss trying to figure out which cars carry which goods (besides the obvious of course like coal or livestock)... something that becomes especially frustrating when I sit down to try and set up a new session on a layout that doesn't already come with one.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,
I suggest the first thing you do is to search on the Download Station for "Products".
When you do this you will find heaps of different things that can be carried. At the same time you will find a lot of "Industry Tracks" available as well.
Once you have these you can then assign many more loads to your wagons.
Most wagons can carry just about anything. To do this place the wagon on a piece of track and from the flyout click on the question mark at the bottom. This gives you a dialogue box , showing what the unit can carry and how much. The wagons have attachment points where a load can be placed. They can range from 1 to many, these numbers are listed in the dialogue box and show as load 0, load 1, load 2, etc.
Each of these loads will have a thumbnail showing what the unit carries and how many. You can add loads to these entries by clicking on the plus sign to the right of the load.
You will now see another window listing the products you have available to choose from. Scroll till you find the load you want to transport then click on the green arrow. That load should now be in the dialogue box . You can check what the load looks like(if it is a visible load) by clicking on the thumbnail you just created and another section will open below it. This has an X sign that allows you to remove the load. Beside that there is a spot to put the load amount into. when you do this the load should appear on the wagon.(use the number for that load)
Sometimes it is handy to remove load items when you pick up a product at say a steel mill and only want one product as the unit will load the first item on its list. Use the X to remove unwanted items
Another suggestion I would make is that when you are building a route, add a spare baseboard to it. On this place some tracks that you can put your choices on and you can also place buildings etc so that you can just go there and click on the item with the get selection in the flyout and you have your modified unit to place at other spots.
I found the best way is to just try things out, if it works ok then keep a noteboke and jot it down for future reference.

Cheers
Mike

Thanks for the info Mike, I've got a lot to digest now. I did have a couple of questions about this though. 1) Do I have to go through all of that just to make it so that if I've got an empty car (cattle car, for example), I can take it to the cattle yard and fill it up? Or is that just if I want to have pre-positioned loads waiting for me when I start up a driver session. And 2) do I really need to download all 1400 "products" (just the quick search), or are most of those duplicates and/or obsolete?

Thanks,
Greg

Unfortunately the cars intended to carry the products must have the proper info in the config file to allow them to be loaded with the products. Take a look over at TPR, they have the LARS system, which is fairly comprehensive.

figuring that it might be important I did download the whole LARS section over there, but that was like 30 cpds as opposed to 1400

Now you should be able to find railcars on the DLS which are iconed as being LARS compatible, and half of the battle is done.

Ok, so if its LARS compatible, all I have to do is use those cars and I don't need to mess with adding all to config data? Will the cars most likely have a mention of being so equipped in their description?

Greg,

I'm afraid you have found the great weakness of Trainz, the commodity system. There really isn't a good way to know what a car can carry in Surveyor without using the "?" and checking the property panel for each one. The same is true for the industries themselves. You can add keywords in CM2 to record what products each car can carry but that is a lot of work and sometime database rebuilds will eat your keywords.

Here is what I do:
Given the fact that there are a lot less industries than there are cars that can service that industry. I use the consist saving feature of the Rolling Stock tab to create different consists named after the Industry and the product.
For example using a built-in industry, the coal mine.
I create a consist of different hoppers that can carry coal on a empty track. Then using the Get Consist button in Consist mode, I save the consist as Auran Coal Mine - Coal. This gives me a ready made consist to place on any route that has the coal mine on it. If I get a new coal carrying hopper then I just place the consist and add the new car and the resave the consist with the same name. The coal mine can also receive Diesel fuel in tank cars so I would create a consist of them named Auran Coal Mine - Diesel Fuel. This system has some advantages such as if I have a route with a different industry that loads coal then I know I can use the Auran Coal Mine - Coal consist with it. Also the consist list is stored as a text file in the settings folder of TS2009. I can make a backup or copy it to a new install of a new version.

Hi Greg,
My suggestion on checking for products was just to let you know where they are when you need them. The loading of the cars was just to see what they look like loaded. This is mainly for multiple load cars, if you select the wrong load amount it will look ridiculous. Wagons are unloaded unless they state otherwise, most of the loaded ones are older content the early Traniz.
You don't need to go into the config to change loading as I suggested, if a wagon doesn't support a product then it wont show up in the list. I use this method all the time . The Lars system is great but restricts the number of wagons you can use.

cheers
Mike

PS: As I said the best way is to try things, experiment and see what works and what doesn't

Greg,
Here is a graphic from pg 187 of the TRS2006 manual that shows the relationship of the builtin industries in TRS2006. Might help get you started.

Phil, where did you get that heavy haul car carrying the excavator? I have to have it.

I'm not sure where it actually comes from, but I do know that its part of the built-in content for TRS2009... it just comes in about 15 pieces for some reason...

From the looks of it, loads are a lot less picky than would first appear. Though I've found that sometimes this isn't the case. I tried to make a consist of double stackable containers for a session and ended up with two containers per car, but they were hovering... turns out that if you put two "40ft containers" then you get that, but if you load two "40ft container" you get the proper load...

" ... where did you get that heavy haul car carrying the excavator?"

Download Station. Search using "philskene" as the author. Make sure to include earlier versions of Trainz if you are searching directly from the DLS - and also make sure you get all the parts.

Can't remember who did the excavator - perhaps try "ish6" as the author. To get it to load see the tutorial in my Rapidshare package.

Phil,

Is your car compatible with TRS2009? I can see all of the parts in surveyor, but I can't put it into a consist, and your HiCap session (which appears to have it in there), only loads the loco's, not the cars...

"Is your car compatible with TRS2009?"

Dunno. I was welded to TRS2004 at the time and haven't yet got around to trying it in TRS2009.

Check to make sure you do have all the dependencies. The reason somethin' don't work is usually because something is missing.

So as a check:
1. Find all the components of the freight car in CM2. Do any have an icon with the "?" next to them? If any do, drag and drop to the Download Helper pane (top left of the CM2 screen) and click start.
2. For each component, select show all the dependencies in the main screen. Again, check for the "?".

Tell us if this helps.

I've just done a few tests in TRS2009.

I can now confirm that the my KRL schnabel hi-capacity freight car works just fine in TRS2009 - provided you have all the dependencies.

I've put together a little demo - mouse click on this link and download the file:

http://rapidshare.com/files/211284902/KRL_demo.cdp

The cdp file contains the test route, a test session and all the dependencies for the freight car. Just drag and drop the cdp file into the main pane of CM2.

In Driver you will find it as "KRL demo". The KRL freight cars will load when stationary between the first pair of wooden blocks and unload at the next pair.

Tell me if it works for you.

Phil

Ok, I'll give it a whirl and see if I was just missing something.

Greg

Trust me Greg, you will find Phil's routes engrossing. They are so well set out.

I have been working on his Port Ogden & Northern for two months now. Phil has a knack for designing a route with impecable justification for placement of track, buildings and turnouts.

Happy days are ahead.
