New Forum BUG Report thread

Not ACTA. As I've mentioned a few times here, I suspect that a lot of it was security-related as the old forum was using a very old version of VBulletin. The board was getting spammed pretty badly the last few months and it was only a matter of time before it got hacked to the point it would be used to spread malware. Without going into a lot of detail, similar had happened at other, much busier, vBulletin sites of which I am a member, so it was just a matter of time here.

That said, the old forum was superior in every way, not the least of which it had a working search feature. The newer software products aren't necessarily an improvement and vBulletin is a great example of this. Then again, what would happen to this forum if everyone who visited got infected with some nasty malware? At the very least, the site would get flagged as a dangerous site by Google and most anti-virus software. Trust me, as a security guy, that sucks, and it's really hard to get off those blacklists once you're on one.

Off-topic: Speaking of forums that carry malware, it seems that the GAURC forum, a third-party Trainz forum that runs the Simple Machines forum software, has suffered this fate. :(

The reply/edit "Your Message" box, when posting, now seems to be behaving differently.

For example the,
URL]
code goes in OK, but it becomes an image in both the message and preview boxes when you preview the post. I'm using the "Go Advanced" section. Previously you could move and/or edit the IMG code, but I can’t seem to do that with the image.

Unless I get it right first time (rare!), I'm having to delete the whole prepared post and images, back out and start again.:(

I've given up on one post which had several example screenshots interspersed with text. It became impossible to edit.

Am I missing something or is this another bug?

If I remember correctly, the code in the post editor converted to the image upon previewing in the previous software also.[/QUOTE]

Not in mine - only in the preview panel. I could always chop and change as much as I wanted.

I never, ever, saw images in both panels.

There is a button (whose icon is two A's with a slash in between) at the top-left of the editor toolbar which toggles between showing the BBCode ("Source Mode") and showing how your post will actually look ("WYSIWYG Mode"); perhaps you had that function toggled back in the old forum?

@Retro00064

Good boy!

That's sorted it. I don't recall ever using, or changing, that button.

All is now working as it should.

Thanks Zachary!

Is GAURC safe ... or not ?

It is a great site, with cool stuff.

I'm not sure about the main GAURC site, but the forums seem to carry malware. The last times I tried to go to the forums directly, AVG stopped it with a notice that the site is a "known exploit, phishing, or social engineering website". The "exploit" part would be what applies. I was able to get into the forums through the links on the GAURC main site, but afterward AVG found 5 threats during a scheduled scan that I stopped for the sake of saving resources for Trainz.

I recently had a virus/trojan infection that caused browser windows to open to a "displayadfeed.com" URL that redirected to some "9 News Today", etc. pages, as well as keeping my CPU usage high/at 100%, and likely causing occasional blue screens of death (BSoD's).

I managed to remove it using AVG, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, or both; AVG detected a trojan file(s) as I was emptying my Temp folder, and Malwarebytes found just over a dozen malware files after a quick scan in Windows Safe Mode.

I wouldn't doubt if my infection came from the GAURC forums.

Zachary.

The return of the "Fooly" effect

Remember when the forums showed Fooly as the newest member for months because N3V had created his forum account with a high user ID that was not the same as his Planet Auran user ID?

Well, that problem has returned with a different user involved.

The forum currently shows ludiwang as the newest member. Click the link to view that user's forum profile, and note the number in the URL of the profile page. This user's forum account has a user ID of 900010 (which happens to be one number higher than Fooly's former faulty forum user ID of 900009), whereas this user's Planet Auran user ID is 627438.

It's the exact same problem as with Fooly's account, and I believe the results are the exact same.

Note that "user ID" in this context does not refer to the Trainz user ID, but instead refers to the user number/ID in the Planet Auran and forum databases.

Hopefully N3V will fix this in a timely manner.

Regards,

Zachary.

Not a 'bug', just a comment...

While it is good to have the DLS 'Black Page' link back in the forum, it used to default to a new browser window but now opens in the current window. Only a small thing, but when 'ducking out' for a quick content check to help with an issue raised in the forum, the 'new window' was a better option...

Andy ;)

Andy, you can RMB the Download Station button and select Open link in new tab whilst waiting for any fix.

Oh wow, that old familiar feeling is back. Our Trainz registration history, the menu bar at the top. Thanks for listening :)

I tried to do a search for one of my posts earlier, and the search couldn't find it. My theory is an incomplete index - in a few days or weeks time, things should be better in the search department.

Posting an image in a Blog is not working right and now win someone posts a reply there loco icon can cover there name up.

Another one that's not a bug just a change, but there used to be a 'Serial Number' button on the top link bar that took users straight to the SN reg page. Now it's via 'Planet Auran' which is a long way from intuitive for new users...

Andy

In light of this, I've created a thread in Trainz Community that is a pictorial tutorial on how to register a serial number.
