BART Screenshots

Hey A

Great works --- read here and there through your thread!

Hope work and school are fine --- real life comes into play and sometimes takwas away from trainz, etc etc ... it's one of those spells! However, looking for ward to seeing all through projects come to life, whenever you come to that bridge!

Take care
Ishie

BART is back with some completed Hayward Yard shots!

After a long hiatus, the BART project is back on! I have cut down on the polys for my ballasted track, so I finally completed Hayward yard just a few minutes ago. What halted the project in the first place was those hi-poly tracks I created, with the main culprit being the curved 3rd rail coverboards. So, for the sake of the game, I'll be modifying them to be somewhat pentagonal, because it'll take up less polys. The old tracks were 1,800 polys---the new ballasted ones---only 300 (including the third rail)! So, the only new tracks are the ballasted ones featured in the screenshots below. I will change these later on to gray ballast, as I haven't recolored the original textures yet. I have to replace all of the other assets and rebuild from the ground up, since all of my BART projects except the B/C cars and the L-line stations were lost when my old external HD decided to die over the summer. Enjoy these shots of the Hayward Yard, and expect building to commence in both directions, hopefully reaching Fremont by tomorrow evening, and the Lake Merritt mini-yard and tunnel portal by late next week. Big thanks to my contacts at BART for helping out again!

How low can you go?

300 polys on a track isn't too bad right? Can it get any better without sacrificing visual quality? No you say. Well, I beg to differ.

This is HUGE guys....I've managed to cut polys down a lot and still retain a wonderful realistic looking track, see images below.

And can you guess the poly counts? Track A is 176 polys, Track B is 44 polys, and Track C with the fence and third rail and all that crazy jazz....clocking in at only 214 polys. This is awesome when you compare third-rail 1T models from other major systems on Trainz...Alterr's Russian Metro kit has 120 polys for a 1T w/ 3rd rail, MCQ's German UBahn is 238, and Magicland's original 1T tunnel is 250. Our NYCTA track is currently 608 polys---eek. No worries, I'll cut that down and get it in order soon enough.

Tunnels and signals

New tube tunnels and signals I worked on yesterday...

The green arrow signal is found in downtown Oakland at the "Core" (A05) where all the lines intersect--it's the zero point of the whole system; it indicates the direction of the switch ahead. There's no official explanation for them, but I believe it's because of the tight curves in the tunnels, and the fact that there is no "proper" signal located at these interlockings. You can't see it here, but they work as switch levers, with the arrow indicating the direction the switch is thrown. I've also created a yellow arrow version used at W33 and W39 interlockings, for the SFO Wye branch; also shown below are the Alpha Indicator signals; at A55 after Bay Fair this signal indicates what line the switch is thrown for, "A" for straight on the A-line, and "L" for diverge to the L-Line. Another variation of this switch with "W" and "Y" exists at Millbrae station's northern end, for the switches to "W" (San Bruno and north/straight), or "Y" diverge to the SFO Wye.

P.S. The mileposts will be adjusted to fit the new tubes!

EPIC!!!!! Now that is the first time we saw the BART Tunnels. those tunnels look just like the tunnels back in LA.

Thanks ToniCrown! In the BART system, we use four different signal colors to convey different meanings. Usually a diverging track will get a flashing-green signal. Those signals are called "unilens" signals and are newer on the system (installed in the mid-90s during rapid extensions to the original system). The signals from the original 1970s pre-extension system have all been rendered obsolete except some interesting finds between Daly City & Colma. Among these original signals are the green arrows, which indicate the switch thrown because of the tight curves. Interestingly, they're only found on that one portion (A05) and near MacArthur station, which is 2 miles north. Usually, we don't use arrows nowadays to indicate switch position. What's funny too is that the yellow-arrow signals are at MP 21.24 right outside San Bruno station, but the switch they control is actually the second switch after the signal, which is a mile away. So, instead of controlling the next switch, the yellow-arrow signal controls something two switches away. Don't ask me why haha. Are those yellow-arrow signals part of the original system? Nope! They're on an extension that opened in 2003. So why use an outdated signal design on a newer type of construction that isn't used anywhere else? Who knows! :p

Thanks Taylor! I also was frustrated with the lack of any west coast subway routes. As a Bay Area native with several supervisory contacts @ BART within my friends circle, this was inevitable. I had to quick-draw McGraw learn how to create my own content, but once I did, it all came beautifully to life. If you're interested, I can release a beta in a few weeks of what I've got. Right now, it's just Bay Fair to Dublin, and Union City, respectively. But by years' end I should have the original 1972 operating segment (which was only MacArthur-Fremont) since the TBT wasn't opened until 1974.

Those screenies look like the Oakland 12th Street Station where the Fremont line merges with the Richmond and Daly City lines (SF Airport now Actually.) Nice work.

Cheers

AJ

You're correct sir! I just did a small test tunnel on my current BART route just for that screenie :p I know it says M17---I know it's A05, but I accidentally deleted A05, A15 and A25, so until I re-do those assets, M17 was the next best thing for me. I'm working on the line to Fremont now, and using shell/placeholder stations for now. My goal for next week is to have everything done to right outside the Oakland end of the Transbay Tube, and at least the K35 interlocking north of MacArthur done.

I like this alot. If you need anything just ask me and I'll try to find it for you. Question are you going to put the bell chimes on the rolling stock once you complete it?

Looks soo good! If you think the rolling stock is no good for you, I can make the BART Transit for you. I think there's only 3 that are in stock: the A car, the B car (middle), and the C car.

Fremont & San Leandro

Hey all! Finally finished the line down to the southern terminus at Fremont, and got as far north as San Leandro last night. The first set of pics is from Fremont; the open-ended C car on Platform 1 is the first half of a "make" (where two smaller trains are joined together to make a 9 or 10 car train to handle the rush hour crowds). The second set is of San Leandro station--kitbashed for now, until I finish a significant portion of the route, after which I'll start modelling the actual stations.

End of the line (still need to model the wheel graters). And no, there really are no bumpers at Fremont!

If there are no bumpers there, I expect you've elected to use invisible signals? It'll come in handy when programming AI traffic and just driving there.
