Optimised code in TRS2006?

Hi

I'm new to the forum and new to Trainz. Done lots of reading and I am currently running the TRS2004 Demo to get a 'taste' of this program. Looks mighty good to me!
May I pose a question please?

2004V2006 - has the code been optimised in 2006, i.e. does the simulator run smoother - or are the differences cosmetic (I know about cmp being added).

Many thanks

With its service pack it runs a little smother. TC runs smoother still but many layouts use built in items from TRS2006.

Hi All
John - Sorry about the delay - many thanks for your reply.

I guess what I am asking is - does TRS2004 with SP4 run smoother than TRS2006 with SP1? Often when a program is 'revamped' the graphics engine becomes more hardware intensive - but sometimes they sort out existing gliches that improve the game without an extra draw on resources. I am trying to make a decision about going for 2004 or 2006 or even Classic Trainz III when it's out! I have to say, it took a while to work out all the variations of this simulator. Hope this makes abit of sense!

Finally, I've seen a thread or link somewhere that compares Trainzoptions txt files/settings - but I can't for the life of me find it now!! I think the 'tuning' is half the fun - I have Flight Simulator 2004 absolutely spot on now after much tweaking and have it's CFG file (configuration file) safely saved and put away!

May I commend all those who contribute to Trainz - this feels to be a great, supportive community.
Cheers

Hi Jont,

It's been my experience that 2006 SP1 runs smoother on my PC than 2004 SP4. I run in openGL on an Nvidia 7600 GS card. I have seen others that report the opposite. Several factors effect performance. Your PC should have at least one gig of RAM, 1 1/2 is better. The more memory your graphics card has the better. It sounds like you have a good PC setup now so it comes down to choosing a version. More people have reported problems getting 2006 to work correctly on their PC than I recall seeing having problems with 2004 but once it is installed and working 2006 is a lot faster loading. Every time you add something to 2004 the program must rebuild the cache when it starts. The more content you add the longer it takes. I'm at the extreme since I have added about 30 gigs of content to my 2004 installation. It takes about 10 minutes to rebuild my cache. TRS2006 on the other hand loads in about 30 seconds regardless of how much stuff I add.

Also, content made for TRS2004 often works in TRS2006 without a problem other than minor tweaks to the config of the item. Getting content made for TRS2006 to work in TRS2004 can be a real hair pulling experience. More and more content is being made for 06 and much of it is very good.

Of course, you can do like me and run both.

On the majority of machines TRS2006 runs better than TRS2004. There are people who prefer TRS2004 and some who prefer TRS2006. These days I run TC but have imported the built in content from TRS2006.

Does that help? I'd go TRS2006 out of the two, slightly fewer bugs with SP1.

I prefer 2004 to run surveyor, much easier to find assets and to group them with TrainzObjectz rather than depend on keywords in 2006.

Also there are some 4,000 items on the DLS that are only available for TRS2006, and some creators such as myself whilst they put version 2.4 TRS2004 on their creations actually create in TRS2006 or TC so if there is a problem reported in TRS2004 that worked OK in TRS2006 my solution would be to up the version number so it was TRS2006 only.

Me too - I build my routes in 04, but run them in 06. In 'Driver' TRS06 is deffinitely smoother or sharper or something....

TC is supposed to be better for lower end computers and the sound is apparently better but you lose about 4/6ths of your built-in content as the downside. I cannot compare as I only have Classics and SP3.
