Money for Nothing

Dear Sirs
I spend hundreds of dollars a year on first class tickets only to find the download station is giving just bits of track on a board going nowhere no proper routes and when you do get a route that might be ok half of it is missing with no link to were it might be. OK i don't make routes not clever enough just like to run them, but those that are putting stuff up they have no idea what a railway is.

There are some mighty good route makers out there like Dick Turpin and others two many to mention so please admin if you putting stuff on the download station please make sure its fit for purpose Thank You

Yeah, erm, about that...
Every user in the game can upload every piece of crap they ever made. It hardly ever is someone from N3V (the "admin").
Now most people do not upload everything they should have deleted, but with the introduction of the mobile devices using (for to me unknown reason) the same DLS as the PC and Mac users, every 9 year old kid is now uploading blank baseboards with half a mile of track.

In short:
If the thumbnail looks like crap and the route has no description, it probably is one of those "not worth it" routes.

Edit:
I spend hundreds of dollars a year on first class tickets
Interesting.
I only spend AU$60 for 25 years of FCT.

Ask your significant other what he/she did with the rest of the money or wonder if you might have exaggerated that number too much.

If you know the Authors to look for and keep an eye on the freeware forum here a FCT can be great, but yeah for every great asset there are 10 useless ones

The other thing to look at is the file size eg File Size: 158.9 kb.

File Size: 132.33 MB would seem to be something more worthwhile downloading.

N3V is not responsible for content to be working, if it is submitted (donated) by a 3rd party creator, who can upload a worthless asset such as: "poo", and "chickenpox". A one year FCT costs @ 6 cents per day at $24.99 a year (and it oftentimes goes on sale for @ $19.99).

Since 2007 I got TRS2006 as a gift for @ $20 ... TS10 on sale at N3V's official store: SimCentral for @ $20 ... TS12 for $15 on JointedRail (and got a free $20 loco thrown in the deal) ... bought a second hand TRS2004 (unregistered disc on EBay for @ $20 S&H included) ... bought dozens of payware for $125 of DLC on on 75% off sale at N3V's official store: SimCentral ... several dozen locos on JointedRail for @ $200 ... You do the math

If you get on free Skype I could recommend many fine routes and assets

Philskene has great, DLS-only content containing routes, with great sessions also. Most of the best routes are from 3rd party websites.

Hi

Don't forget that you can delete routes and sessions quite easily. The type of route that you seem to dislike only take a few seconds to download and usually contain very little content, so if you have to delete them it is no great loss of time.

Some routes such as the excellent GCR routes by Peter Lindley tell you that they are a work in progress in the description before you download them so you know to expect that some boards may be un-textured and may have nothing but trackwork on them. However the route may be worth downloading for the sections that are complete (certainly the case with the GCR) and the trackwork may be sufficient to run realistic operations on it.

If the bare sections offend you then you can always spend a few minutes putting a few basic textures down with a few trees to take the bare look off them. It is surprising how something so basic can improve the look of a route.

Regards

Brian

I would like to add too, don't be put off by the thumbnail image. This can be deceiving because the preview image is created when the route is first saved, and many new creators never realized this can be updated to better reflect the actual route. I saw this myself with my own route. I added a track mark to a new route before I saved it. The preview image was of the track mark and the short piece of route. Much later on I found a better image to reflect what the route was about, but haven't bothered to update the description because I never plan on releasing the route anyway.

I do agree that there are some really questionable items up there, but the only way to find out is to download them and have a peek. This is one of the luxuries of having an FCT. You can download, look, and delete without waiting all day and reaching the 100MB limit in the process.

I would like to thank all who took the time to reply to the post maybe i did exaggerate the cost a little on what i have spent on FCT and Trainz box and downloaded sorry for that. I have taken on board all that has been said and will learn not to put my mouth in gear before my brain. But to all the real route builders out there i would like to thank you all for the hours of fun i have had running your routes please except my apology's if i offended anyone and keep up your great work.
