Chama to Antinito

This will be the official W.I.P. build thread for the Chama to Antonito line. This will be as the Rio Grande had it in the late 40s/early 50s time frame. The route will be after the roundhouse at Chama was reduced in size the first time, but before the final change when the turntable was removed.

The route will be built using the map by Fishlipsatwork. As always any help or constructive suggestions are welcome.

Right now, I will be getting help from these fine folks:

Taylor871 - Doing Research
Bendorsey - Doing what he does best!!!

Anyone else wishing to contribute, please feel free to let me know.

Updates Coming.....Chris

(P.S. I know I didn't put a screenshot in this first message, but do you really need one of the DEM?)

I have started just North of Chama and have the track laid and leveled to the Highway 17 crossing North of Lobato. I hope tomorrow to get it laid and leveled to the Cumbres wye. I have only done just a small sampling of landscaping to see what it looks like. Take a look and tell me what you think. This is the bridge North of Chama, the bridge is supplied by Colorado71, trees are from dmdrake.

More to come....Chris

ditto on the screenie-awesomeness; I felt like I was back at my "second" home again! :D:cool::Y:

and don't worry about spelling Antonito wrong. I did that for years; not to mention I still want to refer to the 463 (my hero K-27 Mikado!) as the 363 :o....

Looking good! I know that there is a snow shed for Cumbres, yet I forgot where it is. DLS?? I know that Colorado71 has made the depot and several Rio Grande buildings that are on his website. I should be getting some more books on the Rio some time in the next couple of weeks. The hard part that I see is HWY 17 with it being repaved/relocated. The HOG lines aren't all that helpful when trying to get it for the 1940-60's. I am looking forward to Ben's release of the GRAMPS/UTLX cars. I think I remember that there was a CAD file for the Chama bridge somewhere....

Chama to Antonito

DOH!!!...I did spell it wrong!! Thanks for pointing that out. :)

I have Colorado71's Chama Depot downloaded, and ready for use. I also think I have the snowshed somewhere....hmmmm. Help on the correct location of Highway 17 would be great. How much of it was relocated? (Thad, I think you volunteered for helping with that?;))

I didn't get as far as I wanted today, only made it to the Cresco Water Tank (She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed had other plans) Hopefully more tomorrow.

Chris

It is hard to tell on the relocation of the road. Most of the video footage I have regarding the Hill has it as a dirt road wandering close to the track at some points. Mainly in the Narrows and Labatto. I know that during the years of being modeled here, the bridge at Cumbres was the overpass for 17. That much I know for sure. The rest... I haven't a clue.

I have all 3 versions of the tankcars in surveyor for testing (at least they show up, lol). I'm waiting on my scripting guru good buddy to slightly modify a script file I have that was used on my battleship gons for use with these cars. It currently is set up with ARN and is interactive for coal. Obviously this has to change to crude-oil (I think), have the animated load part deleted, and either eliminate the sound effect or change it to a gurggling sound. It also may get set up in such a way that changing products can be done by just changing the product kuid in 2 places in the config file with no changes necessary in the script file. One of these is used in the fire train on the D&S (or was when I rode it in 2000).

Questions:

1. Back when I made the battleship gons I couldn't place them on the DLS since the ARN system uses the tag "extensions" (my quotes) in the config file for the ARN info and that generated a rejection. What can be used in 2009 and up to replace "extensions"?

2. Wulf9 requires his ARN icon to be visible in the thumbnail but aren't icons no longer permitted?

Thanks,

Ben

Hello Ben, the Extension tag still works in the latest versions and you do not need the Icon tag for the ARN to work. Have a look at one of my cars, Tank Car FOBX 60' 39134:102409:1 for a reference if you like.

Hummm - I'll admit its been a while since I made anything with ARN so guess I forgot what the cause of the original rejection was. O-well - nice to know I don''t have to learn something else new.

I know I don't need the ARN icon to make it work - its just that the original ARN code from Wulf9 specifically sez it must be displayed with the thumbnail. Is there another way to do it or has he relaxed that requirement?

Ben

There's no other way to show the icon since Auran decided it was no longer needed when they came out with 09 and obsoleted the tag, with no clear explanation as to why by the way. So it has nothing to do with Wolf9 relaxing is request but there's nothing we can do about it, except to give credit to wolf9 in the description which I do.

They seem to do a lot without explanation, lol.

I mentioned that in the description too (or think I did). Certainly can for these.

BTW: When I was fiddling with ARN I notiiced if you tried more then 5 digits (or was it 6 - its been a while) the last digits started to roll over on each other. I found that could be fixed by deleting 1 or 2 of the 8 underscrores on that line in the ARN script. You'd think adding 1 or 2 would fix the rollover but nope - deleting them did.

Ben

Hmm, why not add the icon to the thumbnail directly using any photo editing program like Gimp? That's what I would do. ;)

I have PSP8 but know next to nothing about it. Basically I just use it to re-size textures to powers of 2, make thumbnails, and an occasional progress screenshot to send to an item requester.

Ben

Awesome screenie but I have to ask how you got that narrow gauge content to work in Trainz. Prowler's content comes up faulty with a bogie having issues, uryb2 or something like that. I'm not at all handy with textures and attachment points for these engines, hope there's a possibility that he will allow these to be updated to Trainz 12 standards. Only other choice is togog's content, mainly 2-8-0, 2-6-0 and 4-4-0 engines.

Well, it's not that hard to do. Open up the image you want to use for the thumbnail and open the icon file. Copy the icon file and paste it as layer into the thumbnail image. Position it somewhere in one of the corners, so it won't interfere too much with the content of the image. When satisfied, flatten the image, in other words merge the layers and save as thumbnail.jpg or whatever you want to call it.

One thing to note about PSP8, not related to jpg files, handling of tga files seem to be buggy in PSP8 (Scott mentioned this, he has version 8.1). So for texture work in trainz do yourself a favour and download Gimp, very versatile open source Photoshop equivalent free of charge.

Actually it isn't 100% working correctly, but I didn't have the boggie error. I keep hoping Prowler will update them to TS2010 standards myself.

I hate to say this, yet I think Prowler is no longer with us here on the forums. Last I saw, he was around here in '10.
Yes, I do hope that he is still with us.

Ben,

Glad to hear of the progress of the tank cars!!!!!!!! Many thanks!!!!

Progress update - The line has been built thru Los Pinos and is on it's way to Osier. Once I reach Osier I plan to go back and start refining the land forms and adding in crossing, etc etc.

Here is my yard at Cumbres, how does it look? Also, I can't figure out where the siding in the lower part of the photo ends, help?

Chris, Cumbres looks good!!!! I can't say off the top of my mind where that siding ends there.
