Improving overall performance by tuning assets

From the download station stats we know some assets are very popular.

Can we think of a way to identify those assets that are used and downloaded the most with a view to going over them with a fine tooth comb and deleting unseen faces, reducing draw calls etc. This would need the cooperation of the content creators but rather than go after everything the idea would be to go after the most used content.

What are draw calls and how do you reduce them.

If you look in TANE CM right click the asset then open preview and you'll see the draw call count there. It's basically related to the number of texture files you use. Some early GMAX content was made with thirty to forty texture files rather than use a single texture file.

By the time you add in the bogies etc it does get a bit more complex as often the bogies are used on more than one asset in the shot but the game engine doesn't need to repeat the draw calls for each one.
