TRS 12 IS RUBBISH!!!

At least having bought TS12, if you own TS2010 you can always go back to that - unlike the Railworks paradigm where once the upgrade goes in you are stuck with it.

Coincidentally, I did have an encounter with TS12 last night which elicited a rolleyes from me. Having failed for the umpteenth time to get more than half a mile in the recently upgraded and even more bloated WCML North for RW3 without a SBHH crash, I thought I would see what happened if I loaded up the alleged performance hungry Appalachian coal route in TS12. Got settled in the cab of the steam loco, drove about 200 metres and - lock-up! (At least you don't get that patronising SBHH message though).

Somewhat wry smile though as it dawned that maybe it is time to upgrade the main PC to an I7 chip/motherboard and a 64 bit OS, as two train sims now don't seem to want to play.

My twopennyworth

Hi all,
I understand the frustration. Although I did buy Trainz, UTC, 2004, 2006, TCs 1 & 2 and 3 and 2010, I still stick with 2004 as a working version.
It took me ages to get the hang of CMP when that came into being but in the end 2010 seemed to get that more or less right as well.
But I like the simplicity of getting 2004 running, you just open it and go. I suppose that is true with later versions too and I am being pedantic about it due to my bias.
All-in-all each version had patches, some less than others, some more, in the end each came together and worked.
But many of the troubles stem from the host PC not being up to the job because each successive version demands high specs due to the high expectations that have been made by the Trainz community, exact detail requires a very good machine to run them on.
On the whole versions are reasonably priced in comparison with other games out there so trying a new version does not usually break the bank and once you have it and find it fails to work on your existing PC, then put it to one side until you have a better machine.
The response from Zec was very subdued and to the point considering the bashing the product was given, but at least the original poster did apologise for that, saying sorry is one of the hardest things to do.
The Trainz community usually help with a will when somebody posts with a problem and this would be my first port of call if I had a 'situation', which incidentally I have with TC3. But the problem isn't perhaps with the Trainz version, more to do with how data is stored on my PC and whether or not all of it is removed when uninstalling (it refuses to reinstall).
I do not own 2012 so cannot comment on what it does or does not do. From shotz on here it seems to work well enough once the PC is able to run it, so perhaps the poster would be kind enough to state the specs of their own machine and we can go from there.
One thing with Trainz, you need patience, even more when working with Trainz and gmax..!!
I hope the community can help so can we all take a deep breath and start over?

Blessings,

Angela

RE: My Specs

To Angelah, CPU: Pentium Dual Core E6700 3.30 Ghz

RAM: 6GB

HD; 918GB

CHIPSET: Intel G45/G 43 Express 1695MB

OS: Windows 7 64bit

Direct X 10

I have met all requirements, What "Broke The Camel's Back" so to speak was all of the content I could not use that I was forced to delete, and beginning a project, which I was called away from- that consisted of a single, blank baseboard- when I returned to begin tinkering with the project, the single empty baseboard took 15 minutes to load- on top of having nicotine fits having quit smoking a week ago, which has turned me about as lovable as an underfed Alligator, this just made me blow up, and I do not ordinarily go on these sorts of tirades, but I had about all I could stand. 04 was/is my favorite version by far- I fell instantly "In Love" with it, and still believe it to be the best TRS Release

From a quick online search, your graphics seem totally unsuitable to run TS12.
I could be wrong, but I think an upgrade in that dept. would help.

CHIPSET: Intel G45/G 43 Express 1695MB

If this is your graphics chipset, then it is below the minimum requirements for TS12, since it is onboard/integrated graphics.

As per the minimum requirements, TS12 requires (at a minimum) a dedicated NVidia GeForce 7200 128MB (or equivelant) graphics card.

Since integrated graphics shares both the CPU and RAM (instead of using dedicated GPU and VRAM), this can cause issues with performance. Many integrated graphics chipsets lack necessary features/functions to correctly run Trainz (and most other 3D Games), and as such it will likely cause issues in this area as well.

Apology to N3V

I have, after much tweaking, found a suitable workaround- Running the game under Direct X at a screen resoloution of 1024x768, using 16-bit color seems to have solved many of my problems- The frame rates are a bit jerky in scenery intensive areas, otherwise, it does fairly well in this mode- Meanwhile, I will withhold using the DLS until the compatibility problems are resolved, and I must offer my sincerest apologies to all at N3V- The Game is NOT "Rubbish"- admins please feel free to remove my comment if you wish- I'm a hot tempered idiot. To Zec- Perhaps I should have known, however, I passed all of the Benchmarking tests, so I assumed all was well

Thanks to all who aided me, and to those who rightfully upbraided me- I will shut up and go away now,

My best to all :'(

Well done. There are many variables in computer set ups, sometimes it's hard to pin down the problem.

One hint to help you see what is going on at times when Trainz launches is to go into the Options area of the Launcher. Go to the Developer section. Tick the Show Database Process Window. This will show on the taskbar area the actual process Trainz goes through. If you are bringing in large amounts of new assets then Trainz does a vaildation of each new file before it starts anything else.

Just click on the tasks that show up on the taskbar and you can see the processes running. You may see up to 4 TrainzUtil processes running at once. Helps show why sometimes Trainz looks like it is stalled but actually is working in background checking files.

| love TS12. I played on my cousins copy and it is gob-smackingly good. I thought TS2009 was epic but this is great. And don't explode with missing dependicies. Sometimes it may take a while, hell i waste 4 or 5 hours sometimes, so I would say try AND then get angry.;)

Never that mind all the in game content is not categorized nor organized
anymore so much as it is all dumped out like thousands of toys it takes an
eternity to sort through, resulting in more hair pulling!!!!-

Don't go away we will all help..... we always do!

Now the Organization problem you are having, in the top let corner of Surveyor you have 4 icons click on the third from the left.

You can make the search as wide or as narrow as you want, This one for instance is for a bridge, but if you click on the plus sign you can filter it to be a British bridge, then further to make it a British footbridge, but not only that, you can drag and drop the bridge you want into the box below for the next station you make. to change the type of search you want, just click on the search box and a list will pop up the same as it dose in the CM.

But Please Don't be a Stranger... Ask!:)

Ah yes, the search to the far corners of the Universe for those elusive missing dependencies:

"WHY THE HELL CAN YOU NOT BE BOTHERED TO SUBMIT YOUR CONTENT WITHOUT THE NEED TO GO MUCKING ABOUT SEARCHING FOR DEPENDENCIES THAT MANY TIMES ARE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND???!"

Yep - while I don't agree with some of what has been said by the original poster, I certainly support this.
_____

Now some seem to think the Great Search is part of the fun. I don't. While Trainz has provided me with much enjoyment I'm now at the stage where if all the dependencies aren't on the DLS or if directions for missing dependencies aren't given in a read-me I just delete the content.

Sorry, but I'm sure I'm not alone in that I don't want someone else tinkering with my content to "fix" things that are "broken" just because it's on the DLS. I'll gladly keep it where I'm in control of it and deleting it is anyone's choice.

After reading numerous entries on the forum about the good and bad aspects of TS2012, I finally took the plunge last week, taking advantage of the TS2012 Add-on special - digital download.
While I have always shied away from digital downloads, (I like a shiny box), I realised that digital is the way of the future.
My purchase was processed via paypal in minutes, and N3V had my links and registration numbers emailed to me in another few minutes.
The downloads were fast and flawless, as was the installation and automatic patching. No bother, no fuss, no hassles.
I am still evaluating TS2012. I installed it seperately from TS2010, so that I can do comparisons. Early indicatios are clearer, cleaner graphics, and higher frame rates. I reserve my judgement on the new user interface, because it is new. It takes time to learn all the changes.
As for loading times, I have the UMR Mega-Merge 2011 route on TS2010 and 12, and the load times are comparable.
Alcohaulic...great to see you come around with your views and to thankingthe posters here. It's a great place, and no doubt, I'll be asking more questions in the future.

Cheers
Bob (CRO)

Many PC's have been sold with integrated graphics, and tho the integrated is getting better, its not really great for games. Trainz is 'all 3D at eye level' so really needs an add-on graphics card. Its not the buyers fault, many stores will claim the PC will run games fine. If you can do an add-on card, even a 50 dollar card that will help. We all get frustrated sometimes with Trainz, and it would be a shame to just give up on it. I have gotten countless enjoyment out of Trainz, in its various versions, even with its flaws. It does like as fast a hardware as you can throw at it, Trainz definitely likes good hardware. But, there's something about watching a long freight going along a route, or a commuter train speeding by, that makes Trainz worth it.

Well done with that and I am sure we will all appreciate how hard it is to kick the smoking habit and that may have influenced your reactions.
Your posting the PC specs seems to have brought out some helpful tips and pointers too and given you food for thought.
Glad also that you have at least got 1012 running, if only to a degree, but with an upgrade to your machine it should work perfectly.
Good luck with that and keep your chin up.
Don't go away, everybody wants to help so please stick around and be part of the community from now on.

Blessings,

Plain and simple, Zec has told you what is wrong, you are trying to run 2012 with a totally inadequate system. You can get a good graphics card for a very reasonable price these days. I would recommend Newegg as a supplier.

I have installed 2012 on a small (60gig) SSD. Loading times, especially on a big route like ECML, are significantly improved.

I'm still watching 2010 rebuild its database after 13 hours.................:hehe:

Trainz 2012 is my favorite Trainz so far, excellent speed improvements, especially if you don't use speed tree. Love the 3D sound and satellite view. My only complaint is the turnouts. The first post states that there is too much content and that it is not in categories - the more the better, look at railworks with 30 built in scenery objects

...on top of having nicotine fits having quit smoking a week ago, which has turned me about as lovable as an underfed Alligator...

As someone who is approaching his 13th anniversary of that difficult task, I can tell you that it gets much better. Hang in there - the alternative is not pretty.

As far as TS12 is concerned, I find it operating just fine on my system, as do many others, which would tend to discount the 'rubbish' tag.

Searching for dependencies can sometimes be a chore, yes. But that is not directly a result of TS12, which your post seemed to imply. Many content providers choose to host their content somewhere other than the DLS, so if we want their content, we have to go get it. Those who hate that process can always stick to content that has all dependencies available on the DLS. It's a choice.

Good luck and great success quitting smoking!
