Trainz Roadmap

PortLineParker

UK Route Builder
Hi all,

I would strongly encourage people to vote for the features they would like to see in future versions of Trainz. For me personally, real light source support, ray tracing, volumetric fog and a new skybox are top of my list as these would, I feel, enhance Trainz tenfold and put it in a far better position than the 'other sim'.

N3V are clearly interested in our feedback and I think we should take this opportunity to voice our support for the things we'd like to see. So if you haven't yet voted, head on over to Future Ideas - Trainz Roadmap | Product Roadmap and cast your vote! It's also worth noting that, while you have to verify your email address, if you keep your window open you won't have to do it for any following votes so you will only need to verify it once.

Cheers,

PLP

I don't recall seeing a roadmap that you could vote on before? Nothing will change if you don't make your voice heard, so as N3V are asking for our votes why not give them?

Cheers,

PLP

During the development of TANE, there was a chance to vote on future features. I think there was 20 or 25 choices. After the vote it was announced the Interlocking Towers won and we got that system which is still pretty much now as it was back then. It was said that other features would be included as time and money allowed. In fact, TLR is the manifestation of the choice of real world freight car management system.

....

I would really doubt, they didn't put any single word about that here. My guess is that it should serve as future excuse if needed, or they want to let vote just trendy kids on the discord, not experienced veterans.

I take it you haven't bothered reading the website? On most of the pop outs this, or something similar, is included:

Why Share This Now?
This concept is a draft and not yet tied to a specific release. However, we believe that the best ideas come from collaboration. That’s why we’re inviting you, our dedicated Trainz community, to share your thoughts:

Would you like to see this system in Trainz?
What features excite you most?
What challenges or enhancements would you suggest?

We would love to hear if this feature is something you would like to see come to Trainz. Send us comments, up vote or down vote this item.

You don't have to vote, but if you don't then you can't really start complaining when a feature you want to see wasn't included because it didn't get enough votes. As for 'experienced veterans' - it's a game, whether you've played it for 20 minutes or 20 years you might still have things you want to see in it. I don't think that being an 'experienced veteran' gives anyone any more of a say as to what should or should not be included. The userbase as a whole should have input - which N3V seem to want to hear - so that they can make informed choices and create a product that ultimately sells. I know people like to bash N3V around the head for whatever reason, but when they ask for our feedback don't you think perhaps we should provide it?

Cheers,

PLP

But if you're complaining that N3V never take your comments onboard and then refuse to provide such comments... are they being lazy or are you making it difficult? Either way, they're a business so they're 100% out to make money, correct. Do vote, don't vote - it doesn't really make a difference to me. Hopefully we'll get some major improvements to the game in the future and no one will complain that it wasn't what they wanted :)

Cheers,

I also recommend voting. There's a lot of good stuff to read and if even a small fraction of these features whenever if they are implemented, this will definitely be a game changer no pun intended.

I did recognize some of them from T:ANE. Among the more intriguing ones are the random terrain generator and random object scenery creator. The latter will build cities and towns across a map or an area and that's a good feature especially for those of us who work on fictional routes. Filling in large swaths of forests, farms, and whatnot manually gets pretty tiring even with the Scrapbook. In addition to these two, is an implementation of a product similar to TransDEM, or maybe it is, using N3V's TNI.

When did I complain that N3V is not taking my comments onboard? You are pretty confused though.

There are some very good ideas on there, I have voted for quite a few and I like the different voting options; i.e.: downvote, nice to have, important and critical. I've put the 4 I mentioned above as critical but quite a few others as nice to have or important. I'll confess, I did downvote derailments as I don't really see the need - it is a train simulator after all and derailments shouldn't be the end goal - but I recognise some people are keen to see them reintroduced. Who knows what we'll have? The way I read it is N3V are keen to maximise the capabilities of DirectX12 and I feel this could be a major turning point in the Trainz franchise. It will be interesting to see the results!

My sentiments on derailments too. I thought about the downvotes and I thought it's a dual-edge sword because desktop users could take it out on mobile users who upload 40,000 versions of Highland Valley and British Midlands even though there are supposed to be controls on that.

I read that as well on DirectX12. It is a good way to go because of the point lighting capabilities, additional capabilities and much better efficiency overall.

Point-light-sources... I sure hope so because I'm more than tired of light cones and spots. I've used and created those back in 1995 when I last used 3d-Studio R4 DOS! In their day they were the bee's knees but not anymore.

Point light sources would be my #1 choice too, that would quite literally be a gamechanger. The other features, ray tracing, volumetric fog and a new skybox would compliment it but to have point lighting itself would be fantastic. It would bring Trainz into the 21st century!

I'm looking forward to DirectX12 too and it seems as if they're quite far along with it so hopefully we'll see it sooner rather than later. Once that is implemented and the ground is set for new features, I imagine Trainz will have a very bright future ahead of it.

Cheers,
