Toronto Lakeshore West

*shakes head in disbelief*

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better...

Please, PLEASE tell me this goes up on the DLS!

Hey, I'd almost be willing to pay for this (except that as a student with no job, I'm kinda strapped for cash).

Yeah, it'll be available for free on the dls. The first phase will hopefully be ready by Christmas, but no promises!

Not sure if you're aware of the area or not, but I'm about halfway done the first phase, which is Toronto Union west to Oakville. Right now I'm at Long Branch and heading west towards Port Credit.

Possible further expansion could include pushing further west to Hamilton, or the Milton line, but I haven't really decided yet. Baby steps before giant leaps!

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement. I should mention that I am trying to keep this low-poly, but there are just so many tracks in some areas that it can be kinda taxing on processors. An average to high end machine is recommended.

When I make a bit more progress, I'll try to post some more shots.

Pics look great Neil can't wait to to give this layout a try. Of course you know that if you have trouble hosting on the DLS it will have a home on my server.

Thanks - that's really kind of you!

I'll keep y'all posted on my progress.

Neil,
What is your email address? I have a PDF file of the Oakville sub that should help you out with track layout and industry names. As for the photos I mentioned, any particular area you want? I have shots from the entire route, but they are 3mb 3000x2000 files.

Progress report:

The route it progressing to the west slowly but surely. The present state of completeness, as of Thurs, Oct.25, is Toronto Union west to Hurontario St. Obviously, a prototypical route will never be perfect, but, all in all, I'm fairly happy with the results so far.

Awesome Neil :) For me, it's so cool to look at pictures and be like "that creek runs by my house" or "that bridge and station are how it really is!"

Could I ask you a quick question? In your *Heading west past Cawthra Rd.* picture, there is a signal structure on the far right that is held up by one pole. Could you give me it's KUID?

Can't wait for the next shots...:D

Hey Gisa

The signal structure is actually "built". If you download "signal gantry long, signal gantry medium, signal gantry short, and signal gantry end", you'll see what I've done. It wasn't my first choice of how to do things, but I haven't been able to find any signal bridges that will span two tracks being supported by only one tower, so this was my best option.

Right now I'm working on the Port Credit station section.

Also, I'd like to thank Rob Eull (hope I got that right) for forwarding me the schematics of the line - that info has proven extremely valuable in getting the signalling accurate!

I'm really enjoying building again - and I hope to have the section through to Oakville (including the Petrocan refinery spur, the St.Lawrence cement spur, and the Ford plant and associated yards) done by Christmas.

So far, so good!

More updates as they become available.

Thanks for the info Neil. :)

Could I ask you one more question? Last one I promise! :o

1) What signal types did you use above the actual metal support? How did you "stack" them? :)

I think your idea of using those signal gantry posts is great and is probably the most efficient way of doing that (not to mention that it looks good too! :D) but just for fun, I found out another way you could go about making a single support double signal gantry for two tracks. You could just use the JJS cantilever gantry signal and place two, flip one of them and move the parallel tracks in close together until the signal gantry supports essentially overlap. It might be a bit of a pain though to move the tracks in such a way to get them to overlap, but it might be worth it if you want to have an "arched" sort of gantry. See the pic below:

High trains will fit in terms of both height and width but the main downfall of this solution is that the tracks have to be close together and the signals placed meticulously to make it look right.

Yet another productive Saturday afternoon...:hehe:

If you do a search for "searchlight_signal", they all come right up.

The only problem with these ones, is that they're not very bright, and don't show up from very far away.

Perhaps there's a fix for that, but that's probably WAY beyond my capabilities!

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Neil. I'm just experimenting with things at the moment so any help is always appreciated. :) Thanks again!

Keep on Training :D

congrats on adding to the VTPR route

also, please do not compare the two tt routes! vtpr is mucho more fun!,lol

"rail lands is more acurate, but vtpr way more fun to play..."

rail lands more prototypical, but vtpr much more vehicles to use! and more 'fun'

and yea, many differences in vtpr, but dont see any cn tower in RL do ya?

also, performance, is UNUSABLE in raillands in most machines and much better in vtpr,,,,RL=slideshow on ANY machine....

VTPR takes planes, trains, buses, and streetcars with much more of an old toronto flavor,,,,,and much more fun to use and yes, able to add too(neil)

my 2 cents, but kinda biased,,,,lol

I don't think you can get VTPR anymore. Yes, I know it's still on the DLS but isn't there a bunch of custom content that you have to download from their now closed website?

Kind of hard to compare the two when one of them isn't available anymore.

Tom.

I should just clarify something here - I have not used either of those routes that are mentioned - the route I'm building is completely from scratch, which was pretty daunting when I laid track on the first gray grid!

Anyway, it's going pretty well now. I'm working my way west, and currently, I'm working on the section between Mississauga Rd and Lorne Park Rd.

Once I get towards Clarkson and the Petrocan spur, I'll try to post some more progress shots.

Another progress report

Well, it's still going fairly well. I've made it out to Clarkson GO station, and I think from here, I'll work south, on the Petrocan Refinery spur.

I'll post some shots once I make a bit more progress.

Hopefully, this first section will be done by the beginning of December.

Here's a few more. The mainline is done out to Clarkson GO station, and the Petrocan refinery spur is also completed.
