Toronto Lakeshore West

I have to post a correction here:

The Toronto layout by TorontoTrainz that RWK is referring to is not the Toronto Rail Lands layout that is included with TRS2006.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled browsing.

Tom
(Toronto Rail Lands contributor)

So according to tlanders, there is another Toronto layout.

HOWEVER, quoting Aradlaw:

Hi Gisa,
The Toronto Rail Lands is a fairly accurate route set around 1954, it is a built-in layout in TRS2006.
A screenie looking east, the Spadina Ave bridge mid-screen with the CNR coach yard in the foreground and CNR roundhouse in the background.

Am I missing something here? LOL! It's too early in the day to confuse gisa! :D Can someone clear this up for me?

I have '06 and was referring to the Toronto Rail Lands layout. Are there in fact, two different layouts? If so, could someone give me the kuid of the other one?

Haha yes, you are right...they certainly did take a lot of creative license! :D A trip to Oshawa took something like 5 mins in the layout! :o

Also, perhaps this is the wrong thread to ask this in, but if I want to turn up the traffic on roads, how would I do that? I'd love to use this route with the Gardiner at rush hour as it wouldn't quite be the same without the parking lot there. :D

Gisa ^^

The Toronto Rail Lands layout was only supposed to be accurate between Strachan Ave in the west to the Don River in the east. Anything beyond that was just plain 'made up' in order for the driver to have someplace to drive to.

Tom.

I see...but you still haven't answered my question: is there another Toronto like layout or just the one included in '06?

Gisa ^^

Unfortunately, I don't have 06, so I may have to take some liberties myself with some scenery.

There are a couple of things that I really do need to find though:

1: A good station that I can get to hold 14 tracks for Union Station

2: Those elevated walking bridges that go over the western approach to the station that lead to the convention center and the cn tower.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

n

Okay, I changed the road to the new 3-lane road and it looks way better. Thanks for the suggestion.

The only thing is, unless I've done something wrong, there is still 2-way traffic on both sides. It's not a huge deal, but I'm just curious if I've missed something obvious.

n

^ Those roads are supposed to have one-way traffic, but they don't seem to work for me either. I forgot to tell you this. You may have noticed the 'refined' version while seaching for them on the dls, but even they didn't work for me.

Sorry to confuse you Gisa, my post refers to the '06 Toronto layout (as does tlanders comments) and the 'great creative license' comment refers to the TorontoTrainz comment by RWK.
TorontoTrainz was a 3rd party release for UTC and early TRS2004.
There is no other Toronto route on the DLS afiik
Although you may want to check out my Halton County Radial Railway layout (41078:1000808) a traction museum located just outside of Toronto.

Sorry for the thread hijack neilsmith749

Thanks for clearing that up Aradlaw

@ Neilsmith, I'd love to see some multi-lane traffic on a highway...as far as I know, it's somewhat impossible to make a spline like that, but I think...I remember that there was a way to be creative with placing them so it looked like a 3 way highway. Take a peek in the forums for it. :)

As for Union Station...that is included as an object in the toronto railyards layout in 06. Aradlaw showed us a nice screenshot of it. I felt it somewhat lacking given it's importance, although an object that big is no easy task (and in my route, I don't plan on making a fancy station either: so far I just have a huge box over the tracks :D ) Perhaps some kind soul out there would like to take a stab at that...

Just took the train last night to go see the Rush concert at the ACC, and was pleasantly surprised that a lot of the parts that I have already modelled looked pretty close to the actual thing!!!

Obviously, it's not going to be perfect, and there were a few things that I really need to fix, but all in all, so far, the project is looking plausible (though I think Gisa was right, when saying the Union yards will be REALLY tough!)

n

Good luck on finding some of the 'bigger' scenery items, Union Station, the Air Canada Center and the Rogers Center, and the Skywalk. The CN Tower is on the DLS, but if I recall is a bit too tall to be appreciated in Trainz.

The trackwork itself should be reasonably straightforward, (except for the Union Station train shed)
I don't recall a suitable substitute for the under/over crossover, but I could be wrong.

Hmm, do you mean the crossover at the Spadina yards? Yeah, I was mentioning that that part might be tricky but I think it's doable if you use some embankments and/or walls and a bridge or two.

It's too bad we didn't have a skilled content creator from and/or interested in the GTA :D reading this thread. I hope you'll use the low poly version of the CN Tower as most people wont be able to see much of it c/o its size.

I'll send you some pics of the Spadina yard/Union Station, if I can this weekend. :) Do you have msn? Add me to your list... thelastknight001 at hotmail . com

Thanks - pics would help a lot. - neilsmith749@msn.com

I think I'm not going to try to "re-create" Toronto, per-se - because it wouldn't really look right anyway. As it's a trains program, I'm going to keep in mind the views someone driving a train would see, and not worry about scenery away from the rails too much. The nice thing is that on the north side of those spadina tracks is mostly embankment and concrete building bases, so that shouldn't be too hard to create. I still think I'll be lacking with those walking bridges and the station shed itself, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Again, if anyone sees any cool assets that they think I should use, let me know.

Thanks

Payware route?

Neil, this looks alot better... There's a payware route like this from Toronto-Hamilton for that other train sim. What about the route from Toronto to Kingston, Gananoque?...

Which train sim is the payware route available for and where could I find this?

Thanks!

I've never actually seen any of these Toronto routes, as I only have 04 still. Since I've never created a prototypical-ish route, I figured I'd try the one near where I grew up, and still live.

For the most part, I'm using Google Earth for scale and track info, as well as some scenery cues.

So far, I'm fairly happy with the result, but there's a lot more work to be done!

AWESOME PICS NEIL! =) The one at Exhibition sent back a flood of memories for me! =D

I did something similar for my route in progress (which I've put on hold until I get some inspiration from another route that I am hoping will be available in the next few weeks). I did the same thing you did: put down walls, platforms, tracks, lamps and I made my own *box* to just plop on top so as to make and give a more genuine "station" feel once inside the cab. It's a mixture of stations between Union Station and Gare De Centrale (if my memory and French serve me correctly) in Montreal. Here are some pics of what is in theory, a mostly completed station. :hehe:

This is the before

This is the after

A typical view inside: note that I did not lower the station far enough, but you can see how I tried to "fudge" the lights (still no rectangular fluorescent lights on the DLS as far as I know)

Same view at night. Still a bit dark but yeah, Union Station gets that way at night as you know... ;)

3 trains can be seen here. I decided to put in escalators for eye candy. =D

A VIA train readies to leave the station...do you like the old-fashioned baggage cart? They still use those and there is at least one at my hometown station chained up and rusting away (although perhaps used from time to time for heavy loads).

Lastly, from another angle (sorry about the splines, I was too lazy to go into driver to take the shots). Notice here that I lowered it properly to give a better looking system of lights...

Hope these reminded you of a quasi-Union Station and gave some inspiration. =) Keep up the great work!

Looking good there! I live in Oakville, so if you need any pictures or info for this route let me know. I have CN track profiles and photos of the entire Oakville sub from the cab of a GO train.

By the way, there is no Oakville Sub for "the OTHER sim"... Maple Leaf Tracks did the Dundas sub which runs Bayview to London Ontario. The Oakville sub runs from Union Station to Hamilton. Maple Leaf tracks included a few miles of the Oakville sub from Aldershot East to Hamilton, however it was not a very accurate representation.
