Occasional Fatal Error?

Hi guys. Every once and a while Trainz will crash with a fatal error or sometimes when I exit the main program a fatal error will come up. This doesn't happen often enough to become a real problem, I'd just like to know why it's happeneing. I ran the TrainzDiag and everything checks out.

Is this just a bug?

Help and info is appreciated. :)

Hi Trainman,
I find this can happen with certain locos. Try changing your locos one at a time till you find the culprit, then if you would let me know which loco I might have a solution.

Thanks for the quick response Bill. The only problem is the fatal errors do not occur often enough to narrow it down to a single asset.

I was having a similar problem in MSTS where it would just randomly crash without any error messages. A few of the guys said that it could be an overheating/hardware issue.

Could it be the same thing for Trainz?

Also, does it damage the program to be shut down improperly like that?

Thanks.

Hi Jordan,

I suppose it could be over heating but with me it was a fault in a loco that was far easier to fix once I located the problem. My problem was caused by a loco sounding it's whistle while not in camera shot, in other words at the other end of the layout. Do you have any locos sounding whistles automaticaly, either with whistle boards or hornz commands?

Cheers,
Bill

No, the only whistle sounding is done by me from the cab.

But can damage be done to the TRS installation when it shuts down abruptly?

Ah well, maybe it could be overheating. It should not damage the program shutting down suddenly. But you might have to do a bit of cleaning of fans and heatsinks in your computer.

Cheers,
Bill

sometimes when I exit the main program a fatal error will come up.

I do not know the technical reason for this but it has happened with me for a long time with both TRS04 and TRS06 whenever I exit Surveyor and then exit the main program too quickly. I have a lot of Trainz assets on my computer and my routes are usually packed with "stuff", and it seems as if Trainz needs some time after exiting Surveyor to "put everything away" before you exit the program. If I remember to slow down a bit and wait 15 or 20 seconds the problem goes away. TRS06 is better in this regard, but still requires a brief pause. I have never had any damage to anything from this minor problem.

As to crashing when the game is running, it has almost always involved some faulty rolling stock for me.

Hello

1. What version of Trainz have you got running on your PC?.
2. Trainz and CMP need atleast min of 2gig of ram to run smoothly on your PC and make sure no other programs are running in the background.
3. What version of windows have you got on your PC, if vista make sure Trainz is installed as an administrator on your PC.
4. Have you ran Trainzdiag? to see if your PC passes all tests to run Trainz: C:\Program Files\Auran\TC\Bin\TrainzDiag
5. Have tried deleting the assets.tdx and assets.bku files? so CMP will re-build the Trainz assets database: C:\Program\Files\Auran\TC\assets.tdx and C:\Program Files\Auran\TC\Cache\assets.bku
6. Have you got Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your PC?.
7. To disable sounds in CMP: In CMP go to file then settings then miscellaneous tab then tick disable sounds in CMP.
8. Have you got the latest video card drivers installed for your Graphics card?, recommended Graphics cards are ATI or Nvidia with a min of 256mb ram.
9. CMP or Trainz still not working for you?, must be a problem with your Trainz installation, you may need to re-install Trainz again.
10. Is Trainz giving you fatal errors? fatal errors are caused by a number of things: Faulty content, Scripting errors, Software configuration or Faulty hardware, threads on Fatal Errors link here and also here.
11. You still can't get CMP or Trainz working then list your PC Spec here.
12. Still no joy in getting CMP or Trainz working: must be a hardware or another software issue on your PC.

Regards

Ahsan

I do have the minimum required PC specs.

If this thing won't harm the Trainz installation then that's alright, I just don't want any damage being caused.

If you rename assets regularly to make them easier to find you may want to back up your assets.tdx file regularly. I've had those occasional crashes as well, and once in a while they take the above file with them...
