Good morning everyone

@bendemen - Hi Ben, thanks for your kind comment. Much appreciated!

snip~

I'm also looking at them and thinking that the officially maligned 'billboard' style trees are still way better than Speedtrees, at least for screenshots. Probably get hung for saying that again...

Since this is primarily a screenshot thread, interspersed with some very nice comments, I won’t place my written comments on the subject in this thread. My views on tree types could fill several pages.

I do, however, offer this:

Squadron Leader Bill Boards leads his tem of intrepid pilots over the hills of southern England following rumours of an infiltration of strange tree activity.

Job done! “Oh Four” squadron return to base.

The Royal Air Force, and the Trainz vintage aircraft society, wish to re-assure everyone that no livestock were harmed in this operation.

More to come I hope ... if this one doesn’t get pulled!

Perhaps a nice tranquil evening shot.

Far preferable to all this aircraft stuff!

Cheers

Spikerod -- simply beautiful looking pictures, no better words can describe..very nice.

I must ask, is the sky in the second screenshot available anywhere?

Hi Dietrich,

many thanks for praise. :)

I do not really remember what sky i've used in this older screenshot. I suppose it was "Golden Sky", but where does this sky come from...? :o

cheers

@ Casper I can almost hear the beez buzzing in that first shot, and I love that river 'trick' you developed.

@ Spike, that second sunset shot is quite simply stunning!

Thanks Andy for your comments on the sailboat early morning screenshot post #176.

Thanks too for your kind remarks regarding the water “trick” in post #171.

I’ve now moved on to clouds, so that my aircraft can fly at 7000 feet. Similar idea, but with sculpted grey baseboard “paint” as in second shot in post #174.

As always, the real praise and thanks, has to go to the fine creators who make all this stuff that we can re-arrange into something that can give so much pleasure. I love this sim!

The wealth of trees in the DLS makes life a lot easier too.

The “feature” tree in #176 is by jankvis. But there are many others, e.g.dmdrake (Happy Birthday for yesterday Dave!), many of which are side lit. If you rotate them 180deg the lighting goes to the other side. That helps in the attempt to provide an illusion of reality. I spent a few minutes making sure that the morning light, coming from the left of the picture, was picked up on the tree on the correct side.

It’s not too obvious, but the light on the “fishermen”, the anchored boats, the wall and the sailing boat spinnaker, (provided by the lighting dynamics of Trainz) are all on the left. The tree has to be rotated so the light comes from the same angle. If it’s rotated the other way, it looks lousy!

So many good shots could be made to look great if only the lighting on assets were correctly rotated when being placed. I hate seeing trees which have been placed with lighting on the wrong side, or worse still, a mix of both sides.

My shot was taken in Surveyor, using Alt <fly>, waiting for the sky to move to the best effect before pressing PrintScreen. That’s where “real” water is much more effective. It picks up the reflections from the sky , but you have to hide the hard land to water edges – hence the tufty grass.

Cheers

Casper I never thought of that - never. And what a difference it makes! I always knew there was a 'subliminal' difference in some of my shots, but that nails it. Too late to incorporate in EK3, but from now on all my trees will be the same way light-wise!

That's two tips I owe you heaps for...

Andy :)
