Importing a track diagram as a track laying guide

Thank you again Phil. That seems to solve my map square issue.

I have installed the CDP file and can see the Basemaps in Content Manager. However I still cannot locate them in surveyor. Its defined as 'Scenery' yet in my version if Trainz I have no scenery tab. I have : Topology - Paint - Objects - Track - Tools - Layers - Trains.

This whole procedure is moot if I cant lay down a basemap.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again,

Bill

OK, dropped in Pick list. Am I to do something to the files there? They still dont show in Surveyor. It shows as installed in Content manager. I must be looking in the wrong place.

In Surveyor
Content Search Filter (CTR/Shift/F)
you will see it in bottom of window
click on it and the objects menu will open

Ok, this just isn't my day. I replaced the "1km square a.jpg" file with a test square I got off my map. Its located in - C:\Program Files\N3V Games\Railroad Simulator\UserData\original\hash-33\kuid2 119912 60004 2.

When I open Trainz and go into surveyor, the 1km Basemap A hasn't changed to my map file I placed there. Its still the blue square.

What am I doing wrong now?

Thank you again,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Rather than go into specific details on editing content, I'm going to give you a brief overview.

First don't worry about the install path of the asset. That's all handled by the program via Content Manager. When you edit an asset, such as the 1k base map, make a new one or clone so that the original is still safe. This is also done through Content Manager. Once the image has been replaced, you have to use the same name as the one in the folder, you then close the folder and commit the asset. By committing the asset, it is recorded in the database and any changes you made, both good or bad, are now part of the model and can be placed on a route. If you made a mistake, you have to reopen the asset in Content Manager, fix the error, and recommit it again so the changes are reflected in the database.

Hope this helps clarify things somewhat.

John

I think the basemap you are using is a 1x1Km size (larger than one baseboard which happens to be 720mx720m).

Like he said ... You take the original basemap asset, and clone it as many times, and make as many maps that you need ... experiment on the clones, and leave the original basemap asset unchanged, as that will be your master basemap asset

Using MS Paint, or Irfanview, you copy your map image, or photo as a jpg image ... and copy/paste that image overtop of the blue "1km square a.jpg" jpg image

If your image covers a 1x1Km area, it will cover the entire "1km square a.jpg" area ...
If your map is smaller than 1x1 km, it will only cover a smaller portion on the "1km square a.jpg" image ...
If the map image is larger than 1x1Km, you will need several basemaps, and will slide them around, on the baseboard, by dragging them in the "Buildings" mode

In the config file you can username tag line, and rename the cloned basemaps ... then commit them, ie: username "maracopia east"

I measured you property and it seems to be a Google Earth image of 1.5Km x 0.68Km ... so you will need 2 basemaps ... I will try to make you a map, and overlay it on 2 separate basemaps.

I will work on the 2 images tomorrow

The metric system really is easy to learn ... even I kan doo it !

Wow great Cascade. Thank you. But Im still having a problem seeing the test basemap I made in Surveyor. Ive loaded the files in Content manager but im sure theres something else I need to do there. Im new to all this so please have patience. I'm overwhelmed with information overload at this point.

Give me till after the 4th, as I have to go shopping and buy 16 ingredients for a salad bar, and cook 36 chicken legs wit' hot sauce for a party for the King, in the palace of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick ie:. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?112552-Where-am-I&p=1305492#post1305492

I may even do the route in TRS2006 format, on @ 2x6 baseboards, and include the basemaps pre-made and positioned, ready for you to lay track on.

Of course the locos and cars on the DLS are not miniature ridable 1/8 scale locos, with a 1964 VW high back cushion seat :hehe: They will be full scale prototype locos.

Is this 1/8th scale, SG or NG track ?

We have 2 scales in the hobby, 1 1/2" to the foot and 2 1/2" to the foot. If your train is 1 1/2", the track is standard gauge. If your 2 1/2" scale then the track is narrow gauge. The green Cascade engine, among others are 2 1/2" scale. All of our rail is 1" tall (aluminum and steel), and the ties are 2x4s cut to 14". The rails measure 7 1/2" apart.

Switchbuilder1949,

Have you gotten to the point of being able to lay track on your map yet? I took a crack at creating a baseboard overly asset from a portion of your map and wondered if I did it right. I'm not quite sure I got the scale correct:

I'm going to try again, but this time include your scale measure from the map so I can use the Surveyor ruler as a sanity check.

Hey Andrew, Your close. The scale is about 3 times what it should be. The yard your in has tracks 4' feet apart. Or the separation should look like its a natural freight yard. Great work so far.

Yes Im successful in loading a test Basemap and laying track. But my 1st attempt looks about as big as yours, so I need to scale it down.

So it looks like Im on my way to making a railroad. Thanks to everyone who assisted.

OK, Bill. I'm glad you are on your way. Looking forward to some screen shots. I use PhotoBucket for most of my images.

Great! It looks like you nailed it! Are you happy with that scale? My retry went too far the other direction. I couldn't even fit an engine on that left most Pardee yard track.

Yes It looks close to scale to me. I have a silly question... when laying switches in surveyor, how do I set them for main-line running? (or throw it) I cant find anything that allows me to change the direction, so some need to be thrown after opening quickdrive.

To switch junctions in Surveyor, see the below screenshot:

A) Choose the "Tracks" tab.
B) Choose "Trackside mode".
C) Choose "Junction direction".
D) Click on the arrows of any junction you wish to change direction.

The junction directions will be saved like that the next time you save the route and will be set like that in Quick Drive.
