I would like to talk... About obselete Trainz versions

Then, why don't you provide it for a change instead of relying on all those creators

We are. Please see my previous post with the whole bunch of links providing examples.

If your customers don't want "old content", why do you keep stuffing it into your new releases.

We're not, to every extent possible. Again, please see the links above for a list of examples of new content. No, not everything is new - there's a lot of content out there so we're being choosy about which things need to be replaced to achieve our immediate goals.

How much build number 2010 content was out there when you released TS2010?

TS2010 is roughly half-and-half (by file size) old and new content. Of that, some of the "old" content has been reworked to fix known bugs or performance issues.

Zec,
Sorry, but it hasn't been gone over correctly.

I can understand completely lack of CM? access. Are you saying that even though Content Manager doesn't work, FTP access will still be available to those with earlier versions?

Dave....

So long as you have a FCT, or a 'supported' edition registered, then yes you will have FTP access to the DLS at this time. The methods used to access the download servers may change in future, and we will evaluate this if the time comes.

I am persuaded by the Pro-TS2009/TS2010 side, but what do you mean new content? Are there any interesting steam engines (new for TS2010) to tell me about, because the Blue Comet has caught me in a decision to buy it, but what else is in TS2010? Could Auran make more TS2010 DLC, cause one more item, freeware or payware will make me convert to TS2010.

DLC is a new area for us; I'd love to see us expand into this area but it really depends on the commercial response. So far we're very happy with the response to the Blue Comet. I know Rob put a lot of effort into this one and it shows.

The Blue Comet impresses me, but what steam engines (new in Ts2010) are included?

TS 2010 has taken a lot of old built-in UTC/2004/2006 content and brought it up to 2010 standards.

Although yes there is still a lot of freeware/payware that is better quality. I still think its the best game yet.

On another note, I don't get why people are debating or pleading with N3vr. They didn't say "Should we drop support for 2006?" Its "We are dropping support!" So its obvious this is the direction of the company, which I believe is the smartest choice. Hopefully they hold back on a new version of trainz and focus on route/content/service packs for Trainz 2010.

Just my 2 cents.

hert:wave:

see now all this talk about old stuff makes me think that in order to get rid of the old there is something new coming ,i like a lot of older games by other companies but i don't, do not, never would, expect them years after to keep making patches for them just because i liked them,no no no if poeple cant understand the simple understanding to why it will not happen then shut this thread down for it is a foolish and selfish arguement.
update your computers you have had years to do that and buy 2010 trainz ,by the sounds of it you need 40cents to phone someone who cares,
i really dont mean to be harsh ,,,,,but come on

You aren't really paying attention to what's going on. Not everybody can Afford a Brand New Computer just for one particular game to be usable. In fact, few have even considered such a decision.

My computer was made and bought in 2004. It works absolutely beautifully because I've taken the time to get it running properly and securely, and it uses Windows XP.

I'm not going to replace any part of the tower or Operating System. Ever. I don't need to if it works just fine.

Basic, Timeless Re-Iteration; 'If it ain't broken, DON'T FIX IT!'

You keep standing still. Others will walk on

Do you see Microsoft supporting Windows 3.1 still? What about Windows 95? What about Windows 98? What about Windows 2k?

If Microsoft is able to stop supporting older versions of their operation systems then shouldn't the game industry follow?

Do you see the game makers of video games giving support for the Atari System should one of their games stop working?

It's not about moving on. It's about denying access to a huge data base of content created, not by this company, but by the community. All based on which version of Trainz you own or prefer to use.

I fully agree supporting Content Manager in other versions could be costly. FTP access can't cost that much to maintain since the program is out of the equation.

Had all that content on the DLS been created by Auran, there would be no argument. It's not though. Why someone doesn't upgrade is their decision alone. I did and wish I hadn't, and won't again until I see something more than a content game.

I think it's great they want to move the program ahead. But, if you want to sell me on the idea, start with what you SHIP IN THE BOX. I would rather buy a full native release, even at the cost of less included content. Instead we keep getting that same old content you say we don't want, all the while blaming performance issues on inefficient content you keep including. Catch 22. Until then, from my point of view, this smacks of a heavy handed end around to boost your sales by holding the DLS hostage.

Dave.....

Are you referring to the ongoing inclusion of content that dates back to Trainz CE and UT3 like old trees, stock and such?

a lot of people have trs 2009 but thy are worrying too much about discontinue of trs 2006/04
whats the reason behind it?

Speaking for myself. Trainz projects can run for years. I am currently making a prototyical route from Johnstown PA to Altoona PA in TRS2004. I started the project in 2008 and now its 2010 and it maybe years before its done. That is the nature of the Trainz hobby. I have gigs of content for TRS2004 but Auran is saying that they don't want any old content so therefore my masterpiece route is obsolete before its even finished.:'( Other content creators make content for the older versions what will become of them?

Access to the DLS is NOT denied. What is denied is content created in obsolete versions.

I'm going to continue making all my creations and layouts in TRS2006. If Auran dosen't what to support me, then I will no longer support them. It's that simple.

My thoughts............
Most old stuff works in the newer versions even if some may need fixing, there's nothing to stop people creating for old versions anyway, it's done for most old games, there are still people making stuff for the Original Doom and Quake, just because something is not supported doesn't mean that you can't get many more years of use and enjoyment out of it.
Please no one take this the wrong way but those who won't upgrade or can't upgrade for whatever the reason need to get together and get organised rather than constantly "wailing" about it on here. Auran or N3V had made their decision, nothing anyone says here is going to change that.

Just to add, for those who can not afford to go out and purchase the latest and greatest hardware, consider building up from second hand, I have several PC's here mainly built from second user parts bought from PC markets and such like for very little outlay, mostly they are system pulls from other peoples upgrades, often not even 12 months old. Just make sure you get a replace with equivalent if it doesn't work deal!
Just replaced a mother board for £5, board a 9 month old system upgrade pull, came with a couple of GB of DDR2 which is now in the spares box.
OK so the finished article doesn't look like your gleaming shop bought illuminated see through case job's but they work well and cost a fraction of the price which is what counts in my book.
