GMax and 3DSMax (And any other modeling program) screenies/renders

Nice work!

What some people need to realize (Myself being a bit of a rivet counter ) is:

"Close is better than not at all."

As a creator, I keep a philosophy of "close isn't good enough." Leads to better work, but does slow creation. In that effect, I spend decent sums of money accumulating appropriate research material for best precision I can get.

One thing that causes this for me is the fact that I work on in reality what I create virtually, so even things some consider "minor" stick out to me.

(emphasis added)

While I don't want to derail this thread from the screenshots that it is supposed to be, this is something that stuck in my craw, and there is the key phrase: As a creator, you have the control over what you make. If you want to have every rivet in exactly the right place, that is certainly your prerogative, and I certainly respect that. I love content like that!

However, what Chris was saying about "close is better than not at all" is aimed more at the people (collectively, not any one particular individual) who do not create content, yet niggles over the littlest things on someone else's work. If close isn't good enough for you, you can certainly make your content how you want. Again, it goes back to harping on a creator who spends a lot of his own time making content for himself to use and enjoy, and out of the graciousness of his own heart, shares it with the community, only to be shot down because the doorknob on the locomotive cab is 6" too low, you used 3/4" bolts instead of 17mm ones on the flanges of the de-frappulator, or because the pitch of the sidewalk leading to the front door of the house isn't built to code. Build your own damned locomotive or house if you don't like what someone else makes for you.

I didn't like what was available (or not available, as the case may be), so I learned to reskin stuff. I wanted stuff that wasn't available to reskin, so I learned to make stuff. I never maligned something that someone else made, because at least they made the effort to make it themselves.

A-FREAKING-MEN Scott! rivet counters ruin the game, you want perfect loco's go get a job on the railroad, this is a game. it should be treated as such.

Yes yes, but in that same effect, I like to offer suggestions on things that do help steer a creation closer to the prototype, generally prototypes that align with my personal research and interest. I'm not saying get in your face, its all wrong, just suggesting, that's constructive criticism, and I expect the same nitpicking from others in the same way. If its wrong I fix it, if not I'll justify why not. Don't take this as negativity, it's not. It's not rivet counting to spite others, it's criticism to help point out things that the creator may or may not already know to help steer the content closer to the prototype. My speciality is steam and Southeastern railways, if I did a GN electric, I'm not gonna know all the ins and out of the locomotive, the modifications, the renumbers, I can't always find this in my research. So if I'm told they had Westinghouse E2s for horns and 6-sl brakes and I have something else instead. I'll change it after I make them justify their claims. Others may not, that's their choice, but its still neat things to know, nonetheless. That's criticism.

"Rivet Counting" is not the term you apply to this, and not something I believe I've even seen in this community as a whole. (But have seen amongst people I've worked with one on one with their creations and stuff to help, discussing correct dimensions never hurts) I believe it's a term that is used spitefully to describe a spiteful action, but from everything I've seen, it should really be seldom used.

Some may say this is all for nothing, but helping each other be more accurate and precise helps this be a better simulator. A simulator "is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time." So by definition the closer it is to reality, the better the simulation. There are limitations, the touch and feel and smell factors, but visually and audibly as well as operationally, we can get pretty close to reality. (I do wish we could simulate the feel of the steam throttle in your hand, it's ones of the coolest feelings there is. One many people never get to feel.)

Who wants to go for a ride?

Almost done with it, then mapping and texturing (urgh). Coming soon to a N6-A near you.....

Woohoo caboose interior! Can't wait to see it mapped. I generally don't use cabview, but I have a softspot for caboose rides.

Speaking of mapping I finally got around to this:

Now texturing...

Alright! Since VMD seems inactive, ive been hoping someone would make some new geeps. You think you'll make a modern version with ditch lights?

Pretty much everything I'm making right now is to accompany an early 1960s era Interstate Railroad route around the time Southern moved into Andover and the big transloading facility opened in the old Southern yard in Appalachia. So that means essentially my priorities are Southern, N&W, L&N, and a stray Clinchfield every now and then. However, I plan on making these modular enough, e.g. separate mesh bells, hoses, etc., so that 3rd party folks can easily rearrange to their liking. That's not to say I'll never get around to modern rebuilds, but it's way towards the bottom of my priorities.

I have made attempts, but I am still a novice at making rolling stock in Gmax; but here is something I have started working on recently. It's the SBB CFF RABe 514 EMU. I'm learning slowly... I think?

Most excellent work!

May I make a humble suggestion?

Take a look at BDNEAL's Undecorated SD-9 kit and consider doing the same thing with having the parts you need to move around on the model as attachments I,E, Horns, different fuel tanks, mu stands, steam generator, different roof fans Et Cetera.....

Even if you didn't want to make the additional parts, just having them as attachments would make it easier for others to make new parts for it.

By doing it that way, you could squeeze a High Hood GP7, GP7M, GP9, and a GP18 with 36 or 48 inch fans out of that model.

Also, you could make a second model without the cab and have GP7B and GP9B units.

ATSF had GP7B units.

My humble opinion is that if it is done this way and reskinning was allowed....

There would be a explosion of first gen geeps that has been desperatly needed.
