With new Lidar data sampling you can generate a pretty accurate 3D model of the terrain of states or countries. Some future ideas would be to generate such terrain models, and sell them to the users. I Personally would buy one instead of using Lidar information, google earth, and a govt server to generate height, and area distribution of things from DEM's, and the aerial photos by hand from control points that I make at random. Right now I just make control points, gather information, and triangulate things so I can place them in the editor. Currently Pa has finished their 1st Lidar run, and data is open to the public from http://www.pasda.psu.edu/. Their DEM'S are accurate to 1meter x 1meter represented on the surface.
