Today, in the (almost) "ghost town" of Thurmond, WV, (population 5), only occasionally does someone board the one passenger train that runs only 4 days a week. Things were much different in 1910, when the coal business was booming in the New River Gorge. That year, about 75,000 people road in and out of the town, on the twenty-some passenger trains that stopped at the Thurmond Depot each day.

 
Wow, this is the curve that i associate with NKP 765, due to the suspensful scene in K&L trainz promo.
It is so sad that that town is almost gone, it is so pretty.

You should have seen Thurmond in the 1990s, when most of its steam infrastructure was still in place. Back then, when you visited Thurmond you felt like you'd been transported back in time to the early 1900s. But now, the wooden engine house, two water tanks plus a standpipe, bunk house and dozens upon dozens of other trackside structures (dated back to the 1890s) are all gone. CSX has just recently taken down the old cantilever signals seen in the video and the Park Service has put up modern mercury vapor street lamps in front of the old buildings that remain standing along the railroad tracks. It's a real shame...
 
That's a shame. I have always wanted to visit there and see the curve there. It looks so cool.

Thurmond's still a neat place to visit. You should ride the "New River Train" sometime. :) Even though the trains are not pulled by steam anymore it's still a great train trip that gives you a unique view of the entire New River Gorge in all its rugged splendor. Who knows? Maybe a miracle will happen and CSX will have a change of heart and allow steam to return to its rails sometime in the future.

 
Wow, that was 28 passenger cars!

Back when steam pulled the New River Train there would sometimes be 30+ cars on the excursions and the number of persons on board would jump from 1,200 to about 1,800. I remember the NKP #765 pulling 30+ cars and I think MILW #261 handled 30+ cars at least once, and C&O #614 (with Ross "Speed Demon" Rowland at the throttle) handled several 20+ car trains consisting of mostly older heavy-weight cars with ease. :D

With echos that reverberated several seconds in certain places deep within the Gorge, those steam locomotives' exhaust and whistles sounded fantastic!
