Windows 10 version 1607 update now out

I have just received the Windows 10 anniversary SP1 update. So far, apart from the new look "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device" warning from Windows on starting TANE, everything in TANE seems to be working OK.

I've had it since the 2nd of August, I went for the manual update link to get it out the way, both PC's updated with zero problems one Win10 home and one Win10 pro. Never got any message about running TANE though.
Anyone running Classic Start menu, you need to update it preferably before upgrading and watch the phone home stuff some of which will all have been reactivated unless you choose the customise option on first start.
It also seems to have cleared up problems with duplicate owners and permissions that SFC was unable to repair, apparently a fault with SFC and regedit no longer locks up on searches.
Seems a touch faster as well.

As a sometime 3D modeller, I do have a particular 'phone home' program which I really want to protect from requiring reactivation (it was a nightmare for me last time Win 10 updated itself).

To ensure this, what steps or settings do I need to choose in the customise option for this Win 10 update?

In fact, how do I ensure that I get a 'customise option'? The updates just seem to happen of their own accord, with no chance to customise anything.

The easiest and quickest way is to get hold of Spybot Anti-Beacon, which is free, where you can deal with it all from an easy to use interface and it saves diving into the registry to get rid of some of the more obscure things like telemetry!

We may be at cross purposes here. I have no problems with Win 10 phoning home.

What I'd like to prevent is my currently-activated copy of 3DS Max from suddenly locking me out because it thinks it needs reactivation. I suspect (perhaps wrongly) that it was a Win 10 update that caused such problems previously and I'd like to avoid that happening again if possible. Do the updates reset the Windows firewall settings or the list of programs that I've set as disabled from network connections?

Well that's good news. Since the updates are more or less mandatory these days, I will just have to cross my fingers and hope that 3DS Max is unaffected this time. Otherwise it's another 'scorched earth' uninstall of anything from Autodesk then re-install and re-activate which never seems to go well.

OK with you. 3ds Max 10 working fine here after the update and on both PC's, have not had to change anything relating to firewalls, as far as running programs nothing appears to have changed.

I had to do about 3 or 4 attempts to get build 1607 installed due to registry related issues (both using Windows Update and the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant - it was the latter that eventually managed to do it). It also took a few hours to do the actual upgrade.

The Start menu is taking a bit of getting used to with things moving about a bit though and I had to re-configure my privacy settings after the update using the custom option.

I've also noticed that although mine offered the update around the 2nd of this month, my grandad's system which is also Windows 10 hasn't offered the update yet as of yesterday.

EDIT: Something to watch out for though according to the PC magazine I read - Microsoft may (if they haven't already) associate the Windows license with your Microsoft Account if you use one of those to log in.

I opted to go looking for the update and installed without too much pain other than a late night. Turned off a lot of automatic reporting.

Some of my Windows altering tools look a bit different. These are the tools that actually try to make Windows useful to those who care what Windows does. Hope nothing comes back to bite me. :)

I'm pleased to report that not only does TANE seem to operate normally TS12SP1HF4, TS12 49922, TS2010, and TS2009 also seem fine.

Edit: TANE 75947 seems OK too.

After yesterday mornings (local time) successful update of my Win 10 desktop, I tried the same on my Win 10 laptop that afternoon. After nearly 12 hours I had to give up - it was stuck on 99% in the install phase (using the Update Assistant) for several hours. I have just started my second attempt this morning.

Edit: Second attempt on the laptop took just 3 hours from start to finish. TANE working great on update.

Malc,

By this do you mean there is a place to download the update and install it off line? If so do you have a link? I am on a data quota here and would need to go to an internet cafe for the download and then install it off line.

Thanks,
Ed

This is not a download and save method but you can force the update through the normal Windows Settings --> Update & Security path, then click on the Learn More link.

It is possible, I believe, to get an ISO image of the update but you will need to do some searching for that.
