What's in a name?

mattm

Doing my best.
Slightly bored, looking at some of the user names on the forum, I decided to ask the question: Why do you have the user name you do? Is there a story behind it?

Mine's fairly simple, being the shortened form of my first name, Matthew, and the initial of my surname.

So, how'd you get yours?

Matt.

Back in the olden days, I played an online multiplayer WW2 flight simulator called "European Air War". I belonged to a virtual fighter squadron that mainly flew British fighters. We all had call signs. Mine was Zorro. When IL2 Sturmovik came out, we switched to flying Russian planes. In an attempt at humor, some of us changed our call signs. Mine became Zorronov. It kind of stuck.

Cheers,
Fred

Personal Computers and the internet initially amazed me, suddenly having access to so much information, and so many people at my fingertips. Ephod seemed appropriate.

However, I did not want to be disrespectful to my God, so I chose Euphod instead.

Mine is quite simple - it's my firstname, surname, and the number 12 (which I cannot remember exactly why it's 12, but it stems from my email address).

Hi Everybody.
My username as "wholbr" is the first letter of my Christian name (or first name as it is known now) and the first four letters of my surname. The "W" is short for William but when I was young all Williams where known as "Bill" which seems not to be used now.

The above username is lengthened with the numbers "6539" in at least two of my e-mail addresses. The number was given to me by "AOL" in the first e-mail account I ever had and for some reason I still remember them and use them.

Perhaps living in the UK I should use the name William now and prefix it with the word "Prince" just to be fashionable. Although, thinking about it William was very unfashionable as a name in the 60s and 70s, a cissy name they used to say it was.

24 years in the Air Force and due to my last name, I picked up the nickname Sparky. It stuck so bad girlfriends and even my ex had to call me that because I wouldn't answer to my first name half the time, got so used to the nickname.

The 15 comes from F-15. My favorite aircraft that I worked.

Dave......

Mine was also a service nickname, altho I wasn't an actual sniper - I could hit the target with an M-14 about average, had no special talent for it.

I was an Aviation Anti Submarine Warfare Tech in a heavy ASW helicopter squadron, and that's where I did have a special talent for thinking like a submarine skipper - either that or I was just dumb lucky all the time. On exercises against our nuke subs I always managed to guess where he was going, coach the pilot into perfect position to drop the Mark 46 right down the sub's throat so he had no time to turn let alone deploy decoys and evade. One shot one kill, no wasting the taxpayer's money dropping three or four fish from different places hoping one will hit! So I got tagged with "sniper".

Few years later the US Navy started computerized record keeping on a system called NALCOMIS, everyone used their "running names" (service nickname) for login names. Since there were already a bunch of "sniper"s on that net I just added my boot camp company number since it was a number I'm unlikely to forget.

William or Bill is far better than the stupid fashion names parents seem to chose these days. Harper 7 anyone? Good grief. I always think it's refreshing when you hear a kid being Christened as Jack or Gillian but maybe it's just not good to be normal these days?

Anyway, I digress, pfx comes from my love of a terminably unfashionable grebo rock band called Gaye Bykers on Acid. When dropped by Virgin, they started their own label, PFX, which is the Purple Fluid Exchange.

Mine is quite simple, it is my nickname (Wil) and the first letter of my last name (or middle, cause they both start with H).

When my little brother was a baby he couldn't say Jackson so he said Jackie. (i am a guy) And the G is last initinal.

J is my dad's first initial, M is my dad's middle initial, and Einig is my last name. The only reason why it is based on my dad was because he set the account up, I would change it, but I'm not sure if I'm actually known.

Mine's fairly simple, my first name (Sawyer...yes, like TOM Sawyer... :hehe: :o) and the number of the first steam engine i ever came in contact with, a cold, dead museum piece in Atchison, KS. that would be AT&SF 2-8-0 #811. I always thought it was one of the best looking engines around, but maybe that's just personal preference.

I have a soft spot for British locomotives so tbob is an acronym for The Battle of Britain class of locomotives which are a favorite of mine.

As a kid people would call me azza or azer, when I was trying to sign up with Central Station to play some PlayStation 2 games online all those names where taken so I was trying to make my nick name sound weird and a friend come up with "azer" as my nick name and added "vich" to make it sound more euro as I'll be playing on euro servers (that over 6 years ago too), now I just use it for anything I sign up for.

captainkman is what my Dad used to call me. He called me Kman, Captain, and Captainkman because my first name starts with 'K'.

Qassaq is my sisters Yup'ik Eskimo name and uyanlgli my bros name*U anng gli*

I couldn't think of an 'anonymous' username when I first signed up - and didn't see why I should anyway -so just kept to my real name. It's been good enough for me for the past eighty years!

Well said, Mr Whiley, very well said.

You don't think you're being a little vain, Ed, taking the name of a god?
