What is Trainz Simulator 12 ?

Will I buy TS2012 - yes, when it comes out at the normal retail price of @GBP£30.00.

Will I be buying the Collector's Edition? Sadly, no. I can't see a situation where I would pay £92 for any game/entertainment software but that's my choice. Though it is nevertheless interesting to recall that many of us in 2001 rushed out and paid GBP £49.99 for MSTS when it was first released, what's that worth adjusted for inflation at today's value? The counterpoint being that MSTS was the first of its kind, unless you include the technically excellent but ultimately business flop of Trainmaster 4 which also sold for a similar price.

So for those who are contemplating a purchase, wonder if this version has fixed the frogless and checkrail-less points, a "proper" despatcher and all the other little issues those of us who, while we support the programme each re-worked release, nevertheless would really hope by now to have been implemented.

I think Mario that what will be in the eventual download or disc version of Trainz 2012 is just a guessing game at the moment and not really worth engaging in. All anyone can do is wait and see what the Trainz management write-up about the new version when generally released. You could also wait a few weeks after that and watch what members say regarding 2012 on this forum.

I have a funny feeling right or wrong that we will all be buying it and then as usual there will be a great split by those loving it and those hating it on this forum following that.:hehe:

Bill

You right saying someone will hate 2012 and others will love it. I don't hate TRS2010 I just was astonished when launched the route I was working on. Trees were almost ok but grass... OMG it was like looking at a cartoon!!!!! How can is it possible!? So unreal!!! And another thing... I placed seasonal changing ground textures but... they are only in winter mode and I can't find a tool to change seasons! Or I have to wait a whole year!? :hehe:

Bye Trainzers!

I really hope is not like TRS2010 that is nothing better than 2009... I've to admit: buying TRS2010 I wasted my money because I turned back to 2009. :(

Well I remember after beta testing TC 3 they released 2009, I bought it and it was really a crapshoot whether or not it would even load up and not hang unless you did a database repair.

For the most part that turned me off of 2009. I took the plunge and bought 2010 and have been completely surprised by not only its performance but that every time I click the icon it starts and runs.

Now I know that they have patched 2009 where it doesn't hang any longer, and I loaded it back up and patched it and run it side-by-side with 2010 and 2010 outperforms it.

I'm really sorry that a lot of people don't seem to realize that graphically 2010 is a vast improvement over 2009, same thing can be said about layers, speedtreez really add a little bit of realism that people have for years clamored for, when rail works first came out and you could watch the grass sway side to side everybody here said they wanted that, well now they have it and yet they complain...

Most of the time I'm really at a loss for words for those who have trouble with 2010, my thoughts are that if you can't run 2010 for whatever reason, you're probably not going to be able to run 2012 or anything beyond without some hardware upgrades.

And yes I know 2009 and 2010 are pretty close With the minimum specifications, but 2009 will run flawlessly on my Core duo laptop with NVIDIA graphics, and 2010 will not, now they both run good on my core i7 desktop, but it just goes to show that 2009 is a little easier on hardware than 2010 is.

Well you could always try Ultragrass

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=68492

It's so much better than any ground texture.

Also in surveyor under the menu button there's a setting for environment where you can actually set the session date. So no, you don't have to wait a year...

What a presumably eventual wider release does throw up though is the implications for developers. Do I continue with current or planned projects in TS2009 or TS2010, or put it all on ice to take advantage of the hoped for enhanced features in TS2012?

In that respect, some milestones from N3V if/when they expect to release the normal boxed edition would be useful.

I'd love a copy but........ I just can't afford it! It will be the first upgrade i've missed since the very first version £95 is just out of my reach at the moment..... :(

But I hope you all enjoy it sound fantastic...... russ

Hi Vern and Everybody.
Noted but that doesn't really make it clear there will be a standard priced version for us mere mortals on a budget.

I am sure for us mere mortals that Auran/NV3 will not miss an opportunity to part us from our hard-earned cash. Therefore undoubtedly there will be a more reasonably priced download or disc version of Trainz 12 as no company gives up an opportunity for income.

With regard to your other posting making reference to planned routes for the current version 10 then my advice would be to continue that as it would remain on your system well into the future even after support for 10 was dropped in future years.

It may also be possible to transfer those routes into 12 as it would seem from the little that has been stated that there may well be no change to the basic core engine in TRS12. However, everything at the minute seems to be conjecture and speculation so you can only play your "hunch" as to what really will be the situation in a few months time.

As for me, my North Devon branch lines route is nearly complete with just the final few frames of the section between Lynton and Barnstable to be finished. It is now well over 150 frames and 29 stations all completed. I doubt whether it will ever go on the download station due to the number of " rivet counters " on these forums that would undoubtedly be criticizing it, and that would then not go easy with me after almost 18 months of work on it.

That said, the announcement of a new version could not have come at a better time as I could then start a new route with TRS12.

So Looking Forward to all Developments

Definitely upload it Bill, I'm sure there will be 1000 people who quietly appreciate your work for every one anarchic naysayer. If it's too big for the DLS, there's always TS.com or UKTS to host it, just means users installing then connecting to the DLS for assets.

I think your philosophy over ongoing development is sound. TS2010 is still the current version so keep plugging away in that. With a bit of luck, the work will transfer seamlessly over to TS2012 once it's available.

Indeed, there are many of us who appreciate hobbyists like yourself Vern. Please download. I cannot get enough GW routes. Yours may be modern but I place good old kettles.:D

Hard to go over the DLS limits now, remember they upped the size limit for routes from 50MB to 500MB, and 500MB is a very large route :)

As for rivet counters, if you don't announce it, there won't be any place for anyone to make negative comments. Of course the flip side of this is that any praise is unspoken too, but then who cares about praise? :)

Also, most rivet counters - and I can be one myself at times - only point out the mistakes because they want the item to be the best it can be, and see minor imperfections as something easily fixed to improve the item. There are probably a few very vocal rivet counters that honestly feel that a minor imperfection ruins the whole thing, but meh, don't worry about them.

What I really got tired of (when I actually created a route back in 2006) was the flood of e-mail from people who either couldn't figure out how to load it, got it loaded but couldn't figure out how to get all the dependencies, and then the "rivet counters":D

So I don't put routes on the DLS any longer, not even simple ones.

Thanks for the heads up on that Nikkia, I must have missed an announcement or did it kind of stealth its way in?

It stealthed its way in sometime around, uh, 6 months ago? something like that. I remember reading something zec or WW posted where they casually talked about the '500MB limit' like it had always been there, and thought it was a typo at first, but sure enough it said 500 on the upload page too.

The upload page now says 512MB so I guess it's been tweaked a little further :)

HI Malc And Everybody.

Thanks for that reply Malc, as it's Dragon NaturallySpeaking I am most concerned about as I use it for a lot of reports I do. You hit the nail on the head when you said about speech files not loading through the software after reinstall or upgrade as I have had that problem every time I have upgraded since Dragon 6 (now on 11).outside of that I find the program near-perfect these days (big enthusiast).

I think I would go for the clean install OEM although it is a bit dearer it could save a lot of problems when I come to upgrade. So, all we have to do now is wait for Trainz 2012 on download or disc to be released, see if the new features make it worth buying and if so, away we go on another incredible Trainz journey.

Thanks again
Bill

Bill,

Contact Nuance if you have any questions regarding the import or copying of your speech files. Their headquarters, by the way, is down the street from my office in Burlington, MA :)

We have a user that has this software running on his Windows 7 64-bit laptop, and it works fine. I think it's version 11.
