What content is on your radar?

For my favorite I would really like to see engines of the famed Southern Railway steam excursion program. A set like the CNJ blue comet would be nice, with 630 in black, and 722 in green (with water tenders WT51 and WT52), as well as a complete train of southern cars. With the famed Man O'War combine right behind the engine, classic heavyweight pullman sleepers and pullman coaches and the legendary open air heavyweight observation "Lookout Mountain" on the end or business car (private saloon) "Eden Isle".

The 722 (with WT52 behind) pilots 4501(already in Trainz(3rd party)) with the lightweight combine "Man O'War behind the 4501.

The usual end car, the 1056, seen below after being sold to Mt. Hood, while still in southern colors.

The other end car, the Business Car "Eden Isle" (ex-B&O) now TVRM (owners of 4501 and 630) #98. My favorite TVRM car.

I hope this wonderful consist can come to Trainz, so everyone who loves classic US steam, Southern steam, and lives were effected by the magic of the southern steam program, TVRM, and 21st century steam for a few pieces of the above stock.

The Southern 630, sister to 722 (both 2-8-0s) on a TVRM excursion.

I would love the cars to have interiors, you could hang out the baggage door of the Man O War and record like many people did, ride in a coach seat in a heavyweight, in the heavyweight bathroom lounges, in the pullman berths and compartments, and on the Lookout Mountain, in the open seats and on the rear platform. The Eden Isle could have her rear platform, observation lounge, dining room, kitchen, and staterooms (which I know the layout and style of very well and could provide accuracy details and authenticity checks.)

100% agree. But, bon't forget heavyweight sleeper Clover Colony and dining car Travlers Fare.

How about something east coast US? There was a lot of interesting railroading in New York, north eastern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey in the 1940s to 1970s as the railroads moved from steam to diesel. This area was a bit Anthracite coal area as well with the famous big railroads running through out the region such as the DL&W, LV, L&NE, L&HR, NH, NYC, PRR, Erie, D&H, CNJ, B&O, and the SusieQ plus all kinds of short lines and subsidiaries of these roads.

Sadly, much of this is gone, but what's left even today is pretty interesting. I couldn't believe what I saw on a trip down to the Scranton and a bit south to the Lehigh River Water Gap area.

Steam! UK Steam! Irish Steam! CNJ (US) Steam! Anywhere Steam!

While I'm focusing on routes, it must be pointed out that we would need perfected versions of all the locomotives, coaches (passenger cars), wagons (railroad cars), goods vans (boxcars) and brake vans (cabooses) to go with them in all the proper liveries for the period. Also the routes should be provided with automated sessions for typical timetable days. In some cases, we would need perfected track too.

UK Steam - Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (SDJR) c. 1925
The 1925 date is not arbitrary because the SDJR ran its own beautiful Prussian Blue liveried locos and coaches on the line along with the two other larger railways [the Midland Railway (MR) and the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) until grouping (1922) and then with the London Midland & Scottish (LMS) and Southern Railway (SR) until 1930 when the SDJR liveries were withdrawn. Little change to buildings and roads would have occurred in the period 1921 to 1931 so the route could remain the same. As for sessions, not all locos and stock could have been repainted at once so in early 1922 one would have seen not three but five leveries on the line!

If the route is carefully layered one could also accommodate another interesting changeover where multiple liveries were in operation (though without the SDJR one of course) and that is early 1948 when LMS, SR and British Railways (BR) would have been operating side by side.

The route would need to provide sections of the Great Western Railway (GWR) that the SDJR crosses and sections of the MR/LMS & LSWR/SR which were directly connected to the SDJR (with portals at some distance off). The GWR adds yet another livery to the mix and as the SDJR crossed the GWR line directly at Highbridge and had piers for shipping at Burnham and Bridgwater as well as complex connections with LSWR/SR and connection with the MR/LMS at Bath, so there is plenty scope for complex manoevers. The route should be based on a 5 metre or better Digital Terrain Map DTM (DEM of the ground surface) and 2m and better DTMs are available free of charge in the UK.

I would suggest automated sessions for timetables and operations on typical days in 1921 (or whenever it still had some 4 and 6-wheeled coaches as well as bogey coaches in operation), early 1922, 1925 (and if the layering permits) early 1948.

Other UK Steam
Actually, I would be particularly interested in any (DTM/DEM-based) pre-1939 UK steam routes, but especially the GWR line from Paddington to Penzance, the London to Brighton line and South Coast lines or any railways in southern England. 1938 is interesting for UK steam as Britain was not yet on a war footing and yet steam had matured to its zenith. Equally, road transport had not yet taken over completely, yet the railways were using road transport to complete door-to-door service in competition with road transport.

Early 1922 would provide an interesting setting to see London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's (LBSCR's) beautiful liveries along with Southern Railway liveries and the 1930s would be good to show a mix of steam passenger and goods and the, then new, third-rail electrics, including the famous all Pullman Brighton Belle.

Ireland - the West Clare Railway (WCR)
A DTM/DEM-based route from Ennis, where the 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge WCR met the 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) Irish Broad Gauge[1] line (from Limerick to Athenry), right through the beautiful countryside of Co. Clare to the coastal termini at Kilrush and Kilkee would be a very worthwile project. The West Clare Railway closed in 1960, but an interesting period to model might be c. 1950 as the WCR introducted diesels for passenger services in the early 1950s and some might like the opportunity to mix diesels and steam. In Trainz at present, almost all (BG) Irish locos and rolling stock are modelled with 4 ft 8 1⁄2 (1,435 mm) standard gauge bogeys, but the section of Limerick to Athenry line (with portals) modelled should be Irish Broad Gauge and the locos and rolling stock correctly gauged for it.

Other Irish Steam
The island of Ireland had a really complex network of railways before its partition into the Irish Free State (now Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland in 1922 and there are numerous other interesting possibilities for the period immediately before that. Tell us of your favourites.

US Steam - CNJ line for the Blue Comet
A DTM/DEM-based route for the Blue Comet would go down a treat, being the CNJ line between the Communipaw Terminal in Jersey City (serving New York just across the river so you can model the ferries too) and Atlantic City together with "off-stage" portals for adjoining (or continuing) lines. I've said it before and I'll say it again, N3V's beautiful Blue Comet train deserves nothing less! It has to be up to US content providers who really understand steam operations of the day as us Europeans would have no clue what to do.

Peter.

[1] At 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm), Irish Broad Gauge is the same gauge as Victorian broad gauge in Australia, so someone could use the Victorian broad gauge track as a template for the Irish broad gauge track. There may (or may not) be differences in the sleepers, chairs rail shape etc.

All very interesting but rather beside the point, which was what content is wanted. Whether that comes from each user directly or from the DLS via contributions by a few skilled creators is another question. To that point, expecting every user to be able to create content, even if they had all the tuts and tools is quite a stretch. One, not everyone is interested in the creation side even if the like the results. Two, even if they are interested, being able to is a big cliff to climb. I know, I've been climbing for more than 13 years and I'm still learning.

Well, he asked what content I wanted. I responded. A complete creation wiki is content... Just not the type that comes in a CDP and you can drive around. :hehe:

After that, I never said I 'expect'. I said 'potential'. Big difference. Anyone on these forums could go out today and take it upon themselves to not only learn Blender, Gmax, Et al as well as the process' needed to build stuff for Trainz... Part of my point, though inferred rather then spelled out, is that if N3V encouraged this by giving us an easy way to learn the Programs, through learning how to make stuff for Trainz through the programs, there might just be more content Creators to begin with....

And certainly any of this does not 'require' anyone to participate if they don't wish to. But there have been numerous posts on these boards through the years from people lamenting a lack of understanding of or ability in these programs. Some come back later having tackled them and succeeded. Most don't.

Honestly, if *I* had to prioritize for N3V here?

1:Fix Tane
2:Improve Tane
3:Get us the long promised and awaited Content/Creation Wiki

And none of those are mutually exclusive, though I'm sure everyone has varying degrees of feelings on the importance of each.... And certainly a Wiki isn't going to magically poof new content into existence, but having seen the difference a few people can make on a job, I'd have to mention its my belief that it'd be quicker in the long run to help train 100 new Content Creators, then it would be to have the 10 awesome Content Creators at N3V (Random numbers, I don't know exactly how many they have), keep producing..... Certainly there are some 600K+ registered Copies of Trains, and I don't think its unreasonable to think that a Wiki might reach .01% of them.....

I would like to see more PCC trolley cars. Tume has made two for TANE, but there were more built into TS12 which are not available in TANE.

ideal content

The past few weeks we have asked what content people are working on. We’ve been very impressed by the quality of content and dedication creators are putting into their works but someone's masterpiece might not be someone else's cup of tea.

We would like to hear from our community on the content they would like to see in future Trainz products. Have your say, whether it's a certain type of locomotive, consist, prototypical route or a session that allows you to relive that beloved journey you once took across the USA, UK or wherever.

We want to hear what your ideal content would be for Trainz.

I would like to see roads streets and highways with imbeded tracks on outside lanes and the inside lanes used for ia traffic and cpmplete intersections
Also would like to see highway vehicles with working lights incl turn signals and brake lights.

How true this is
. I am at present putting together a route . It is taking lots of time & I am thoroughly enjoying it. It would be more enjoyable if I could learn from tutorials so that I knew what I was doing & could make a more accurate rendition of the trackside scenery. At the Moment I have only the Content that is available in the Game & some from the DLS. It would also be handy to know what content in the DLS works for Tane & which doesn't. Having said that, I am learning. Just hope I do not make a silly mistake & lose the lot.:)
As far as Content. At the moment anything that improves the content in DLS .

I would also like to see more North American (LH wheel control) vehicles, more so for transit vehicles, (Trolley busses) Streetcars based on American styles (Old and Modern) The transit vehicles, would have operational doors, working destination sign, interior. There were some units similar for 2006/2010 programs but somehow could not be used in TS2012 and don't believe they work in TANE. Bus/transit stops (short type) that donot stop at the end point but near the beginning of the stop. Some like we had where one could adjust the location of the passengers and maybe updated passengers as to clothing styles. Tracks splines that could be specified for the particular vehicles and the appropriate Catenary height for the vehicles included in the description.

I am not going to create any more content and put on DLS as long as the supported versions (2012 SP1 and TANE) is "infected" with phone home DRM. I refuse to create for something that some other (in this case N3V) decides when I no longer can use it.
Remove the phone home DRM and fix TANE, then something might be done

According to Tony, this is going away or being changed at some point. When we don't know - probably soon(tm) like a lot of things are done here. :)

One thing that seems to be lacking is Canadian equipment. Yes, there has always been those couple Canadian locomotives, but AFAIK in Trainz 2006 with the Toronto Rail Lands was the only Canadian route. You can see CP SD40-2s everywhere, and Canadian cylindrical hoppers

Some interesting suggestions here. I particularly like the suggestions of more urban transit equipment, the L&B, the West Clare Railway and Woodhead. If the bugs were fixed, the inclusion of one or more of these routes would definitely tempt me to buy T:ANE. I think the key here is variety. If could make another suggestion, I would like to see the New York - New Haven line in Trainz, set in the 1930s, in November -December time, because 30s New York! At Christmas! Not only would it be atmospheric, you've got huge operational potential. Imagine driving one of PWeiser's electrics through the snow, with commuter MUs passing every few minutes, with Manhattan and the Empire State building as a backdrop, at sunset. I'd love to see that, and it'd be nice to see a US routes getting attention that isn't focused on post-1990 to present freight operations.

Two separate issues... I would like to see, grouped together, All modern U.S. rolling stock and locos. Second, In multiplayer, a "dispatcher screen" where one player can be the "Dispatcher" and have an overall view of all consists including manual override of signals, A lot like the existing "Map" but much more interactive. But maybe a Schematic view. It can connect in real time to all players in a specific multiplayer game. A click on any labelled consist can get details like; showing location, speed, simulated "Hot boxes"......and relay real-time information back and forth between Dispatcher and player, through speakers (verbal, with verbal response too if they are so equipped) and written in language of choice in a small screen overlaid somewhere on main screen with click response also.
