Paul - you say you've uploaded a TRS22 version of Lavenham. Is that to the DLS? I may be missing something but I can't find it....

It is a while since I posted, but I have begun the process to transfer my forum post images from IMGUR to freeimagehost.
I was reading Steve Banks' website and he in the article he had a nice shot of a GCR 9J 0-6-0 hauling a coal train near Leicester around the time of the grouping.
There is no GCR 9J 0-6-0 on the DLS but Camscott has an LNER J11 and we have PFlindley's GCR V15 route to run it on.
So, during the Big Four era, here is a former GCR 9J 0-6-0, now LNER J11 Class hauling a loaded C class coal train south on the Up line approaching Whetstone.
A further view, south of Whetstone showing the variety of wagons to be found in a coal train of the era. 3, 5, 7 and 8 plank types available in-game with company and private owner wagons, all wooden. Steel wagons would come in time, though, as Steve Banks said, it would take many years to sweep away all the wooden wagons from the system.
In Dennis Rowlands "Keeping the Balance" articles from the 1970s he made clear that the LMSR of the period just prior to WWII hauled many coal trains and most of the wagons in those trains were private owner types. This meant that coal trains could be very varied in composition. The GCR London Extension similarly appears to have operated coal trains with a wide variety of PO wagons. The NE Area of the LNER had a rather different environment, which was a legacy of the NER's preference for colliery owners to use NER Hopper wagons for transport of their output. However, even in the NE Area of the LNER there were private owner wagons to be seen at the pithead screens as NE colliery owners supplied coal by rail to regions outside the NE of England. They also filled wagons for stationmasters' landsale coal business at stations and some of that was in the colliery owners' own wagons.

Still on Pflingley's GCR V15.
Robd's GCR 8F 4-6-0 No. 1097 IMMINGHAM is hauling a load of coal empties north through Rugby central station.
I have not found a GCR brake van to run with the freight locos.
However, I see that Rapido trains have announced that they will build the GCR 6W 15T Brake Van in OO gauge and that it will run to 15 different models, including an NCB variant for the NE Area.
Steve Banks has an article on building a kit version of the GCR 15T brake van if anyone wants to see what they looked like.

Having located an old GCR 6W 15T Brake Van by Camscott (Thanks Annie) here is it on the back of the coal empties standing on the down slow at Rugby.
The train runs to 44 wagons, plus the brake.
It appears that the down slow would accomodate four, perhaps five more wagons.

I've stood in that exact spot looking at what's left of the platforms many times. It's very overgrown these days, but when I was a youngster in the mid 70's my Gran used to take me to walk along the old trackbed - only 6-7 years after the final closure of Rugby Central in 1969 it was still bare ballast even with some signs of indentations where the sleepers had been then.

No. 1097 has reached Loughborough, where it stands in the down slow for couplings and wheels to be checked.
If there are passenger trains to pass by then they have a clear road on the mainline.

Work on the SR Project is going extremely well too! The London to Brighton Line is finally under construction!! It's not done yet but a preview of the future - things are about to get very busy at the site of Three Bridges!!

BR standard 4 heads a Bournemouth West-Bath service, seen at opposite ends of the line: initially at Poole before seen passing through Radstock and arriving at Bath.

I have a feeling that if even one of those had been built that come WWII it could likely have found itself on heavy freight workings. Thompson would likely have modified it in some way by 1945 too.

Included in the GCR freeware download from Camscott's Darlington Works was a set of GCR 9J 0-6-0 "Pom-Poms".

The northern portal of Sherwood rise tunnel lies ahead.
New Basford station opened on March 15th 1899, closing to passengers on September 7th 1964 and closed completely on October 2nd 1967.
Imagine for a moment if the GCR main line north of Aylesbury had been treated like the former L&SWR main line to Exeter.
Singled and sorely neglected through the 1970s 80s and 90s for sure, but there would have been a base to work from in the 21st century.
