Sorry to be a pain folks. I've tried the internet but come up with nothing. GWR used SW whistle boards but what I'm interested in finding out is when or if the Western region replaced them with the more modern circular boards?

Many thanks again,
Innis

My guess, - and it's only a guess, - that in some parts of the old GWR system it wouldn't have happened at all and the SW boards would have stayed in place until Beeching shut them down.

Thanks for that. I've a feeling you could be right. The period in question is the early 80s so post Beeching. I'd be surprised to see the older type sign by that stage but who knows? The Western liked to be different.

There were two types of round "W" disc - the earlier ones (without any border) were certainly widespread mid-70s but they were introduced as far back as 1965 and were the standard from 1965. The grey, blue or red border was an 80s invention I think, but I don't know exactly when.

That said there was no great rush to change the old cast ones away from the mainlines and I'm pretty sure I can remember seeing them in odd places still well into the 1980s and I wouldn't bet against one or two still being around on some of the freight only lines in Cornwall long after that.
