TRS2004 - Draw Distance

Vern

Trainz Maverick
I've been looking at sight lines etc. on my WIP Scottish route with a view to eliminating un-necessary sections to keep the final cdp size in a reasonable limit. However at the same time I don't want to create gaps where the route user can see a section removed. I've been working on a maximum draw distance of 2km (largely because that's what MSTS used) but I was wondering if anyone can say for certain what it is in 004. Closer in I might get away with removing a few more sections but further out and I will need to start being more picky.

From my own experimenting I would say that Trainz sees a bit over 1000m, or about 1 1/2 baseboards, with the performance sliders maxed to the right.

With some fiddling in the tuning.dat file, in the settings folder of TRS2004, you can see things past 10km, at the cost of performance, so only for high end machines. Usually leave mine set to about 4km. Lets me see what's around without over taxing the system.

Very interesting, how do you fine tune draw distance?

How do you fine tune draw distance? As per the original thread question what is the standard default draw distance? Assuming setting are on the max for TRS2004.

Conventional wisdom has it that max draw distance with sliders maxd and no tweaking is 1500m, but like gfisher I find that in fact 1000 meters is more like it.

To tweak draw distances in either 04 or 06 (and I believe also TC) use Alex Covaco's (sp?) TrainzTuner, available here.

Andy :)

Thanks for the answers guys.

I'll continue to work on 2km to provide a level of overlap and safety margin against trimming too much. I don't think my laptop would run much over default draw distance anyway but useful to know there's a tweak to increase it if desired.

Can I suggest that you take a look at the density of the clutter on your new route? Because you placed so many trees right the way back in your last route, I couldn't run it will full draw distance...

That's why I'm investigateing the new low poly grass pieces and splines which are now on the DLS! Also, this time round I seem to have hit (more by accident than design) a good mix or two of terrain textures which should avoid the need to go OTT with the ground cover.

The point is taken though equally there are those who complain if the ground is too bare (the infamous "2007 Standards" doctrine for MSTS found over at UKTS). Hopefully I can find the right compromise!

;)

Trainz Tuner v1.2 may be the answer...

...At least on the topic of altering the Trainz configuration.

You can change the maximum view distance (and other things) using Trainz Tuner v1.2, a freeware utility with Auran's name on it.

If you're worried about seeing scenery holes in the distance, then increasing the good weather fog a little so as to hide them has far less effect on performance than increasing the draw distance. Just a thought.

Harry,

You're right, isn't Auran... I can't remember why (my age is showing) exactly I believed this was Auran.

The credit should go to kreativenergy. I've corrected this on my software page.

Thanks,
~Rick

quite easy really...

It's the wording on the site that's to blame...

Trainz Tuner is an utility for Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 (TRS2004), Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006 (TRS2006) and Trainz Classics (TC) from Auran

Makes it appear that Trainz Tuner is from Auran doesn't it?

Just goes to show why you have to be clear about what you're trying to say so that people don't get the wrong end of the stick.

Harry

I've noticed a low poly grass thread somewhere or other. To give my perfectly honest opinion, the content there wont have a significantly lower poly count than any other foliage. Don't pin too much on it.

It's more to add a bit of life - sparingly - immediately trackside.

Moral of placement for this route...
If it's a forest, place a small wood.

If it's a small wood, make do with a copse.

If it's a copse, make do with 2 or 3 trees!

Hello,

Now I see that I did not carefully chose my words, to what I never thought to be a problem.

I've changed the text on the site:
"Trainz Tuner is an utility for the following Auran's games: Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 (TRS2004), Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006 (TRS2006) and Trainz Classics (TC).
(...)
NOTE: Trainz Tuner is made by a Trainz enthusiast and is not in any way affiliated by Auran."

Quick bump.

I've now installed Train Tuner and extended the draw distance to a fairly modest 3km. The effect on my WIP Scandinavian route is outstanding, mountains now appear in the distance instead of popping up abruptly.

If there's one alteration Auran should consider making in any future edition of the programme - it's to up the draw distance. There can't be many people now with PC's that couldn't handle 3km and the benefits are more than worth a couple of FPS.

That and a new graphics engine ;)
