Trainz Update Announcement (SP6)

What is the point of PBR textures if you can’t put them near or under the track where the parallax effect can be seen and appreciated?

As you say, using Trainz 22 SP4 and later on a PC appears to not allow the use of PBR textures near or under the track.

But that’s not the case for Trainz 22 SP4 on a Mac. Sadly, it appears to be the case for Trainz 22 SP5 and Trainz 22 SP6 on a Mac.

Fortunately, I have been able to revert back to Trainz 22 SP4.

In Trainz 22 SP4 you can see the effect of PBR ballast surrounding an unballasted track asset. I spent a couple of months achieving this result over 150 miles of track.

The fact that I have not been able to achieve this result in Trainz 22 SP4 on a PC is the main reason I have not and cannot make my Canadian Pacific Railway Mountain Subdivision route available on the DLS or otherwise, i.e., on my website. Another reason is that the route with High Density (HD) terrain and Physically Based Rending (PBR) is 5.44 GB, much too large to be saved as a CPD file.

I have little hope that N3V will address this issue. I am not even sure they realize it is an issue.

As the Wiki says,

“PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures have been a part of Trainz since TRS19…”

“PBR Textures do have a few downsides compared to non-PBR textures. Specifically,
They do not mix well with non-PBR textures (including textures used as ballast in track) and, sometimes, with other PBR textures as well. This can cause "height issues" where the two different textures meet. There are techniques that can be used to remove these conflicts.
Sudden (steep) changes in the ground height under a PBR texture can cause an "animation effect" under the texture that has been likened to "wobbling jelly" or moving "jellyfish guts". …”.

“These issues are not unique to Trainz and can be found in all games/sims that use PBR ground textures.”

So, this means it can’t be fixed?

Works in Trainz 22 SP4.

Now that I have Trainz 22 SP4 back I will be sticking to this version until a new version (not an SP update) comes out.

In addition to the jellyfish guts, many if not most PBR textures are over-sized, don't scale well and become more like carpet when used to fill large areas.

Because of this, I turned down shader quality to Basic. This turns off the 3d component in PBR textures and allows them to behave with 2d textures when I have used them for various things such as rocks, sand, and farmland. The other benefit is running with basic shader quality is there's a bit of performance increase and lower temperatures due to less work for the video card.

I have had to turn down shaders to basic also to have all the textures behave and to stop random crashes, even in SP5!

My older laptop struggled until I changed the shaders to basic. I noticed a big difference there and did the same with my desktop even with the much more powerful RTX3080 and I9-12900K

Hi there!

I've been trying to install the SP6 update on my Trainz22 Build 129335 for days, but I keep getting this message:

"No update for Trainz is available at the current time"

Am I doing something wrong? Where and how can I download the update?
Thank you for your attention.

I'd hold off until they release the fix for the problems others are having. But if you insist, it is on the TRS22 Beta stream.
The hotfix is being tested now, and users are reporting vastly improved performance. So hopefully that means they'll be sending it out in the next couple days.

I installed SP6 on my M4 Max Mac (PC still has an older version) and noticed the game hit a brick wall, with frame rates easily being cut in half and pretty severe spline pop-in. If you haven't downloaded SP6 yet, I wouldn't until the hotfix is released.

after this update when i go to drive session from surveyor my game freezes at the start of session and i had to force close trainz and restart.i am unable to drive after entering drive session from surveyor.can some one help its getting annoyed

I'm a bit surprised N3V released the same patch without changing anything, it's still better than the original SP6 release of course, although I hope smaller bugs I reported will be fixed in HF2.

The list of known bugs is long and prioritized on how fixing a bug will effect others systems and how many users are impacted by the bug. Most bugs go years without being fixed unless they cause serious issues for many users.

I can attest to that. My "longest bug" ran from TS12 through to TRS19 before it was fixed - apparently I was the only person who reported it or was annoyed by it. Thankfully, I managed to find a simple workaround that solved the problem while waiting.

After installing the patch, everything is fine again. :)

A question, Ivo, because it's not clarified:

Should the ones who never updated with SP6 first update with it and later with the HF1? My prudence with Trainz updates still wins the updating impulses. :D :D :D

Thank you.

The confused side of Alberte ;)

I initially installed the patch in my test version first and checked my big route where everything was falling apart with SP5. After seeing everything was back to normal, I installed SP6 and HF1.

I'm pleased with the result with intact track and buildings in situ and not flashing or disappearing.
