Trainz Update Announcement (SP4)

Aha! I guess I don't have to give up on Trainz after all. Support finally responded with some useful troubleshooting instructions (sort of, read details), which I appreciate very much.

So I don't know the problem but this fixed it:
  1. go into %appdata%\Local\N3V Games\trs22
  2. make a new directory there, I just had a single build bcs6jf111 directory and I called it build bcs6jf111-new
  3. edit the userdata-redirect-map.txt file
  4. change the line that points to your build dir, make it point to the new empty dir you created
  5. save the file
  6. launch Trains
So now I'm up and running.

Details: Actually maybe I can't read, correct me if I'm wrong, but they linked me to this help page to fix things:

So what I'm still a bit frosted about, if you read through that page it all assumes that you can run Trainz in the first place! Which I couldn't.
But it gave me the idea to make a new dir and point to it.

So if there's a question, I guess now I have to import my content into the new directory?
If I do it one at a time until it breaks, that's how I identify the culprit?
I'm glad you got everything up and running.
The instructions are in fact for moving and creating a data-folder but also work for creating a new empty folder. I've only had to done that once due to a corrupted install. When you create an empty folder, T:ANE and up will automatically populate that folder with the base-content.

Using these instructions, you can actually move your existing data-folder outside of the default path making data management including backups a lot easier and you can call the folder something else other than build-something which can get confusing if you have multiple installs.

Many of us place our folder on another drive if we can. I placed mine on my E:-drive under PLUS_DATA.

When editing in Classic Surveyor mode I've had temporary screen freezes when editing an industry track, BI3, JR's Multi Industry. The JR Muti-Industry is broken in this update, worked fine in previous versions, I cannot add to the second entry, the "Track Menu."

I use the retail version of TRS22 PE, I run it on several Windows PCs. I updated some of my installations to SP4 126273 and a few days ago one install that had been working would not start, the shortcut reported missing exe file. Sure, enough the exe file had gone, I don't know where. I used my digital download to reinstall the 126273 version and it was restored to working order, I assumed finger trouble.

Today a second install failed in the same way on a different PC and this time I am sure it was not my fingers at fault. To restore this version to working order I copied the exe file from the first PC and that fix restored this install to working order. The same thing happening on two separate PCs after the same update stretches my belief in coincidence to breaking point, so I have submitted a ticket to the help desk and eagerly await their response.

Both of the PCs are running W11 and the first failure of TRS22 was before the latest Windows update and the second one was after it, so I am reluctant to blame MS on this occasion

The obvious question to ask is are all your hardware drivers (video, WiFi, Bluetooth, various Intel, etc) also up to date?

A few months ago, after a Trainz beta update, a number of posters in these forums were experiencing crashes and other faults and were blaming N3V for a bad update. The actual cause was that the users were not keeping their drivers up to date.

Also consider that Windows Updates sometimes (but not always) can "update" a manufacturers hardware driver to the Windows generic version and this can "break" the driver.

Just some possibilities.

Yes, they are I monitor updates daily using three sources: Windows update, Avast Driver update and the Intel driver update tool.

Have you recently updated or reinstalled your antivirus program?

Antivirus programs are notorious for "cleaning" and removing executables they think are bad. Depending upon the product, some are worse than others for this. I recommend checking your antivirus settings, ensuring that TRS22.exe is excluded from real-time scanning. You should also exclude your Trainz data folders. Antivirus programs can corrupt the data that's expanded from .tzarc files during run-time.

Have you recently updated or reinstalled your antivirus program?
No John that is something I am aware of, and I have a discipline of manually updating the AV and monitoring what happens, I also have the Trainz install folders excluded from the AV Scans to protect against that risk.

The odd thing is .exe files don't just get deleted like that normally. You could have a failing hard drive. Run a hard drive scan and check your hard drive for faults. It could very well be a failing disk and if it is, backup your data ASAP.

Two different installations of TRS22 on two different PCs both doing the same trick, one of the PCs is a Corsair one i500 less than 3 months old and the other is an i200 SE about 2 years old so I could believe that older machine might be a risk not the new machine and both PCs have been running TANE, TRS19 and TRS22 SP 3 with no problems and they continue to have no problems with the other versions or any other software I have installed. I appreciate the suggestions John, but the error is so specific and occurring on two Windows machines within days of the update. To expand on the issue the SP3 version of TRS22 running on the i200 machine has not had a problem so maybe the new exe file is susceptible outside maline influences. Oh yes as soon as the first glitch occurred, I backed up all the databases which I normally do weekly.

This morning, I attacked my AV program and instead of excluding the TRS22 SP4 .exe file I excluded the TRS 22 folder containing the exe file and hope that stop this strange occurrence that was happening when I first switched the PCs on. I think the AV was doing a boot scan and causing the issue possibly before it read the exclusions. Time will tell and I look forward to no more surprises.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, as always very helpful.

Trainzers: Upgraded my Trainz Plus Gold to 126280 and everything seems normal until I go to Surveyor or Driver, then every route displays normally at extreme distance but changes to pink/purple/yellow hues when I zoom in. Box in Launcher displays: "Please note that one or more developer settings are active, which may negatively impact gameplay." However, I cannot determine which developer setting might be the culprit. Any ideas? Bobber in Barrie

For some reason, the game doesn't think I'm authorised to use SP4 even though I was able to download it off the trainz website. Anybody know how to fix this outside of contacting helpdesk? they've not been very helpful lately

The first thing that I would try is to reenter your user name and password in the Trainz Settings MyTrainz tab. Then restart Trainz. This is not uncommon after an SP update.

I updated to the latest then got a lot of errors after rebuild
"Failed to download precached data for package ......"

I also did a clean installation and downloaded all content and gets the same errors

Is that a concern?

Ok, I'll try to be as clear as possible ...
Besides TS12 and TS19, I have TS22 and recently added TS22PE (only to try S2). Let's say that I usually still work with 22, so the PE version is almost "empty" ... so I decided to try the update, I had nothing to lose if something went wrong.
Without any problem, in a few minutes it was correctly displaying PE 126273.
As I didn't find any strange behavior, after updating, I decided to update the "normal" 22 as well.
I didn't have any problems with it either ...
But, now both show the same boot image (PE 126273) although they keep their respective contents ... which makes it a bit confusing to know which one you are on.
I checked a bit, and each one has its folder in Program Files, although the content is identical in both, with different dates in some files.
However, in AppData, under TS22, there are the two corresponding Builds.
I assume the core is the same, and does not discriminate between PE and NON-PE.
Since I now have Surveyor 2 in both Builds ... I assume I now have two different PEs versions.
A little confusing ... though glad they work well.

Are you sure you didn't select the same TRS22.exe? It's the same name regardless of which version, including Plus if you have that making this very confusing. This also goes for the update source. I had to make sure I was selecting the correct update source as well because after updating Plus, the updater automatically chose Plus and not TRS22.

I almost made that mistake when I updated Plus and TRS22PE yesterday. It's no big deal with these particular installs because I use them for testing purposes but still it's something to really watch out for.

It doesn't worry me much either, because all my stuff comes from TS19 ... In fact, when choosing the Stream where to search it only shows TS22 but does not specify that it is PE.
Even when installing new PE at the beginning, I created a folder other than Standard for it and told it where to install it (in fact I have 3: Tane, TS22 and TS22PE) to keep things separate ( TS12 y TANE are from Steam).
However, it created another "TS22" folder and not a "TS22 PE" folder inside the folder that I indicated ...
In summary: when PE was installed, it did so as just TS22, in another folder.
I'm not worried about reinstalling both again, just back up the downloaded content and start over ... but it bothers me not knowing if I made a mistake, or it was an induced error.
