Trainz 12 and Steam Problems

Hi. Just bough Trainz 2012 on Steam.

When I go to the DLS it won't down load anythnig and doesn't open the Content Manager.

Also, when I download content from 3rd parties like Jointed Rail the files aren't recognized as CDP files. I think that means I don't have the utility to open CDP files. Where can I get that program.

Gosh, Trainz is so difficult. Hope I haven't wasted $50.

Thanks.

I don't know what file structure the Steam version has but the Auran TS2012 is in Program Files\N3V Games\TS12. Find that in Windows Explorer, open the \bin folder and run TrainzDiag.exe. If anything doesn't pass, post the results here.

The answer to this problem is trickier than other versions of Trainz (non-Steam versions).

Be aware that applying this fix will affect all Steam games you may have installed.

Please follow my instructions at http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=running-as-administrator - the shortcut you need to apply it on is the Steam Client shortcut, not the one that launches Trainz.

Another few notes regarding Steam versions:

1.The folder path is a subfolder of <Steam installation folder>/steamapps/common.
2.Due to a direct patching issue, Steam versions are currently unpatchable to a later version. This may not include TS2009 as I've heard a patch may have become available for that.
3.Following on regarding patching, for TS12 this means you will not be able to take part in multiplayer sessions, or install certain DLC content (i.e. the Aerotrain).

Shane,

I tried your fix but the download helper still doesn't work.

Also, even when I manually download items when I try to install them it doesn't work because it doesn't recognize them as CDP files and asks me what program to use to read them.

Any idea where I can get the CDP program so I can install the files?

Thank you.

To install cdp files manually you use the import cdp function in the Content Manager File Menu, not as I suspect you are, double clicking them, which probably isn't working as you don't have a file association set up for cdp files.

If your intention is to ever be able to play multiplayer in Trainz12, then yes you have just wasted $50.

The Steam version is not patched and (based on experience of others) they usually dont patch their version to the latest version of Trainz, which is required for multiplayer.

I'm sorry.

Nah, thats not so strange, you do that stuff all the time :p. It is scary however if you could not remember that .

What is strange, however, is that you think everyone will use search and/or find those threads ;). Not everyone does that plus search seems to not always be in the mood to help :(.
No offence intended; I know a lot of people appreciate your tutorials and if search and I have a good day, I probably will to.

That's one reason why I keep the links handy.

A bit later on, I will be updating the thread in my signature to add that thread.

P.S. I wonder if the N3V moderators think it's important enough to make it sticky.

Making a post sticky which basicly says "dont buy from this company because that will give you this list of problems" while that company has been a big consumer of their software for the last few years?
I doubt that.
Then again, I am not running this company.

Actually, the thread does not say not to buy from the company, it states certain pitfalls, as well as certain differences between the Steam version and the 'main' TS12 versions.

We will see...

The other option I've got is to add it to my tutorial site or blog. Which do you think is better (if either)?

Yes, thanks. I was able to figure that out.

Is there any way to associate the files with the cdp program? That would make installing what I've down loaded manually more efficient.

Also, any other suggestions for getting download helper to work with Steam version? Again, more efficient way to do it then manually (I did set the Steam client exe to run as administrator, but when clicking download with Download Helper from DLS still nothing happens).

Thank you.

If you have run Content Manager at least once after setting the client to run as administrator, it should set up the required links automatically.

Failing that, it will involve some manual setup, which clam1952 may be able to assist with.

Find a cdp file > Right click on it > Open With, if content manager is not showing as the preferred program, click Browse, browse to the folder that Steam has stuck Trainz in and find the TS12/bin folder > select ContentManager.exe > Put a tick in always use the selected program and click OK. Assuming no permissions problems that should work.

There are a couple of posts on here that said you can run Trainz without starting the Steam client by running the Launcher direct. I might suggest perhaps copying the Trainz folder to another location setting up the shortcut and try running it normally, should be easily able to sort out any permissions problems then.

That is true - doing this will require the Launcher to be set to run as administrator as well.

The thread I've linked to above covers the likely location of the required files.

P.S. Thankyou to Malc for responding to my suggestion - looks like I was right to advise that.

Shane,

For what it's worth, I managed to stumble upon a fix for the using Download Helper to download items from the DLS at least it seems.

I followed your instructions and modified the Steam Client propeties to run as admninistrator. Then when I restarted my computer and Steam started it gave a message saying Steam doesn't like to run in windows compatibilty mode. I got back into the properties for the Steam client and compatibiltiy mode was not checked. So I unchecked run as administrator (the only thing I'd changed) . When I then started Trainz I was now able to use the Download Helper to download items from the DLS.

I don't know what this means, but perhaps it will help others.

But, still not getting the automatic association of CDP files. If someone has some instructions on how to do this manually I thank you in advance.

oops. Our posts crossed in transit. Thank you for these instructions.

OK - that's unusual. I've got my version of Steam to run in admin mode. Might be worth checking if it needs updating.

If you use the combination of Malc's post above, and the thread I linked to above, it should help you set up the .CDP link.

Hello again.

Followed your instructions and was able to set Content Manager as the program to open these CDP files.

Stll not getting the orange CDP icon, but I assume the CM will install them as well.

Thank you for all your help.
