The General, a US Civil war locomotive

No, I do not have any cars for it, this is my first try at creating anything in GMAX for Trainz. I would lOVE to have freight and passenger cars for that era. There are replys on this thread for cars. If I can't find what I want, I'll make some. They just HAVE to be eaiser to make than the engine! ;)

Well, anyway, I just want to say, WOW!!! For a first try it's amazing. Fantastic job.:Y:

Yes the General went through many changes. In 1855 a typical Rogers loco had 3 domes. Buster Keaton's Locos were form the 1880's,backdated to look more like the 1860's. The Microscale decals reflect the Civil-war scheme. I have the MPC kit of the Gerneral myself (4 actually). I have been to the museum in Kennesaw ,Ga. Your rendition of the engine as it appeared from 1962-on looks great, and along with Ben Neal's 4-4-0,will help fill a void in Trainz. Can't wait for the release. The only reason I put MSTS BACK on the hard drive, was the availability of great looking 4-4-0's like the "General". So keep up the good work! Joe S.

MPC kit? I know AMT/Ertl made mine, not sure what you have. My kit is 1/25 scale and has not been released in a LONG time. Would like to know what the MPC kits look like. Museum issue? Historical issue?

Thanks for the reply! For everyone's knowledge out there, I have an email, (hopefully), to the creator of the MSTS General for it's historical accuracy. I will plan on re-doing mine historically "accurate" if I can get the information. BUT it will not happen any time real soon. Need to finish this one first.

Almost there!

MPC was the first release then it has been bought by AMT/ERTL and released again...many years ago. It is the same kit. We often see some kit at ebay.

There is a copy of the Book " The General and the Texas",on Ebay right now. I dont think its proper to post a link, but if you do a search,I am sure you can find it. I have collected nearly everything I can get my hands on regarding the "Great Locomotive Chase". Contact me off-list if you want to know more.

Hopefully soon. I went on vacation, now I'm covering for someone else who left and I'm busier than ever! Also I still have a couple of corrections I'm looking into.

Would rather release one that is near perfect than a buggy engine!

Thanks for your patience! :D

Thanks for the tip! Ordered it a couple of $$ less on Amazon. I'll eventually get around to making a Civil War version since all of the hard work is already done!

Thanks!

Not sure about the "Russian Iron", but from the photographs and from memory it seems it was simply a gloss black.

I made the General (plastic model) and plan to make another version for Trainz in dark green. Reason is because I didn't like the museum colors! They didn't look like a working engine in the field to me. (She was after all made up to look pretty for the Bicentenneal!)

Terry
Website you linked to says the boiler was covered with felt and Russian iron. Whether the sheathing survived to cover the current loco in the museum is another question. It may have been replaced with other material.

If you're still having trouble with the steam-engine spec let me know if you want some help. You can send me a message thru my profile. There wasn't too much info on the loco's characteristics on that website.

Photo of the original engine as she sits in the museum. There is only one MINOR difference between this image and the photographs I have.

Having the enginespecs verified and then I'll release it. Glad I didn't do it too soon, found other issues that have been corrected!

Yes, it looks much nicer now. You think maybe you could make another version that's 5/8 the size of it and runs on 36" gauge, Just like the one at Six Flags Over Georgia?

Not sure if just shrinking the one I have will be "scale" enough. What do you think? Is there a picture of the one @ Six Flags? If I can shrink it down, (if that is good enough), I'll consider doing it. Do you have a layout of Six Flags?

Does anyone know how to take the engine in Gmax and shrink it down a certain percentage? For the Civil War version I'll need to reduce the width of the axles, (and other items), but is this enough? I admit I have to research the Civil War version. I'm assuming, (yes, I know), that the basic engine is the same just not the gauge.

You can find pictures of that engine on this site:
www.sfog.net

Okay, maybe it's not an exact replica, but shares many features. I'm not working on such a layout yet, but with your engine, it sounds feastible. Now if I could just have more amusement park objects...:o

Hmmm. didn't spend a whole lot of time on the link you sent me, but I couldn't find any pictures. I DID manage to find an old postcard with the engine on it. ("Precious" comes to mind). :D

It wouldn't be a difficult task, but probably not high on my to do list.

I still need to make a cab view for the one I'm about to release, and I want to make a Civil War version.

Again, IF I can find out how to shrink it down, I may knock it off relativly fast. The one on the postcard looks almost exactly like the real thing!
