Spam Attacks

Sonicownersforum.com was brought to it's knees by such attacks about a year ago so they implemented a 10 posts to a new folks only section before being allowed into the rest of the forum and the problem went and stayed away.

Unfortunately, there really isn't any perfect solution to spamming, at least without either impacting accessibility for new members, or adding extra workload for our moderators.

Then maybe it is time that happens - the mess created by the spam attacks and N3V's responsibility to protect users from inadvertently clicking a link that might attract malware, spyware or worse (ransomware) surely outweighs the odd potential new user not being able to post a question? Sort it out for once and for all instead of pussy footing around...

Sorry Vern, but if you look at the spam it is freaking obvious it is spam. If you then still click on it, it is your problem.

Anyway,
Did another round of whacking; 4 banned, over 75 posts moved/cleaned of which 60 or so didn't even become visible for most of you due to some ending in moderation queue.

The more recent attacks appear to be coming from Korea and the Philippines that have similar time zones to Australia. In order to report these things as spam one has to first look at them. If there is another way then I'd like to know as I have reported several in the last few weeks.

I'm puzzled why the spammers bother to identify their country of origin. From what I've seen of the posts, there appears to be a web link embedded in the title. I guess one would have to be a little dumb to go there.

It may not be their country of origin, it may simply be the country of some computer that they have hijacked.

Perhaps we should look at North Korea. They can't have us capitalists enjoying ourselves can they!

EDIT Congratulations oknotsen. Between my opening this reply and posting it he has cleared them out. Just a pity they will keep trying.

I'm bright enough not to, I can assure, but given there a lot of kids on here who might not be so savvy or just downright curious again, you have a duty to take punitive action to stop it. At the moment it's gambling links, what happens when they start linking to hardcore or child porn sites, snuff movies or links which launch an immediate ransomware attack on the users PC? If I was a parent and found N3V hadn't taken steps to protect my children from malicious content, I would bloody well expect them to stump up the cost of getting my PC unlocked. Sorry but I just don't think this problem is being taken seriously by N3V or the Admin, who were quick enough to take the forum off line when they deemed too much negative criticism of TANE was being posted but seem incapable of taking basic internet precautions. You don't see this type of thing happening at UKTS or Trainsim.com - even Trainz.net - who have effective screening measures in place.

I think it is time that something like this is implemented

I don't know what I Googled ... But I found plenty YouTube videos on how professionals, Companies, and forums, get rid of spammers permanently

You can play whack a mole at Chucky Cheese's all day, and they will keep popping up again ... but you will never efficiently stop spam that way

Question, how do you go about reporting spam without clicking on the thread? The report buttons are in the posts. I ask because they're at it again in surveyors operators and engineers.

Another suggestion, when someone registers his copy of Trainz he gets the "station stops", how hard would it be to prohibit new members from posting at all without having registered at least one copy of the game? That would cut way down on both spammers and warez kids.

nor could someone interested in buying ask a question either. Are they not already restricted to the general forum? If not why not?
