Spam Attacks

nor could someone interested in buying ask a question either. Are they not already restricted to the general forum? If not why not?

I just reported one in this forum.

Get out the big hammer, moderators. the big onslaught is heading your way!

The only forums that are off limits to new users and ones that don't have registered trainz copies is the one that has all of the different versions (minus the T:ANE one)

Another one spotted. It's been posting in the Chinese branch forum, the parts and labour forum and the general trainz forum.

A load more in general just now, very sloppy N3V - how long must board users put up with the annoying distraction before you get off your backsides and do something to kill it at source?

Notice it's all located in the Parts & Labour and General Trainz boards?

Honestly, how can moderators have let this continue this long? Surely someone would have realised that no matter how many times you delete the threads themselves, the users/machines who posted them in the first place would simply post a new string of these pointless gobbledegook threads!

Working on it.
Got no permissions in the Chineese section, so that part has to wait for another moderator.
Edit: Tony is jumping those.

Because we have a life outside this forum.
We do not get paid for this.

If you see spam, please report it by pressing the tiny triangle below the post, so we know about it, instead of complaining about it and not reporting it.

Thanks @ Steamdemon, Shane, CaptainKman and a few others for reporting the posts.

We could simply ignore it although I concede that that will probably not make it go away - the spammer(s) probably get paid 1c (or 1d) for each posting so they could afford to ignore us ignoring them. The poor sods probably don't even realise that few of us forum members can read Korean (anyone?)

... before you get off your backsides and do something to kill it at source?

"at source" ... would a nuclear strike on the Philippines, or Korea (North or South?) or better still, the virtual country hosting the online casino they are advertising, do the trick?

Just a few random thoughts while I await the release of SP1 - only 40 minutes to go before it is Tuesday Jan 12th here.

"At source" means applying the common sense restrictions on new members if not a registered Trainz user outlined several times over these pages:

1. First post(s) subject to moderator or admin check.

2. Not able to start a new topic or thread until they have replied a set number of times.

Utter complacency on behalf of N3V when you don't see this type of thing at UKTS, Trainsim.com or more general popular forums such as Overclockers UK.

That would make some sense. It appears that the integrated nature of the MyTrainz system seems to be limiting the spam prevention methods available here. Perhaps N3V will know what is indeed possible.

In post #39 in this thread (with the bold emphasis added by myself) ...

Hi All
Unfortunately, there really isn't any perfect solution to spamming, at least without either impacting accessibility for new members, or adding extra workload for our moderators. We have implemented some methods to help reduce this, such as a 'CAPTCHA' for users without versions of Trainz registered to them, and we are also looking into other options as well.

As registration is through the MyTrainz/Simulator Central websites and not the forum software (this is why the forums say registration is disabled), it is a little more difficult to add in steps in the registration to prevent spammers. In particular since the spam we are seeing is getting around the more common methods (CAPTCHA, and similar).

.......

Somebody Who already knew this said:
Bot's can break these all day long with the more advanced ones. I've seen forums using this, and they still manage to get attacked by spam bots. It has to be something that only a human could do, and then set the bot loose, making him an easy spot compared to now.
Does N3V do IP bans? Maybe they should.....................

Spam has started again about 30 mins ago.

Pity you can't employ a trick I used on automated FAX calls that used to bug me in middle of night.
We had a fax/phone switch.
When a polite request to delete us from there calling list did not work, I forwarded all fax calls straight back at them.
Didn't take long to get some action.

Yup. The old fax was easy to defeat once you waste their paper. :)

My brother had an issue with fax spam a few years ago so we created a stack of paper which we sent back to the caller. Each page sent spelled out DO NOT SEND THIS TO ME with each letter on a single page and each letter at as large as it would fit on the page. The callers got the hint really fast after they wasted their paper and toner. Another one kept faxing anyway every day so we taped three sheets of paper together into a single page with some not-so-nice words on it, then taped the ends together to create a loop. This worked really fast after that.
