Scanning layouts into surveyor

I used to have a copy of a utility/asset that allowed me to scan a track plan, and paste it onto a surveyor board. (similar to displacement maps IIRC) The name escapes me, and therefore a search is just about impossible.

Does anyone have a recollection of the name of the asset I need to re download?

Thanks for any help
Brian

There is TransDEM, and another. one of the two is a payware item. and I'm not sure about the other. Sorry i'm not too much help.

I am curious if there is perhaps a tutorial to show how to use this? I have some copies of DR (before WW2) track plans which I think will work well with this.

Best way I found to use Basemap is to know how big in baseboards you are aiming for. Once you have that, take the track plan and "cut it up" into seperate image files for each baseboard. Then resize each of those images to 367x367 and paste onto one of the Basemap image files. I only work with one Basemap at a time so I don't have an overlap problem placing several. If there was a Basemap that was sized to the Baseboard, then you could put several onto a layout at once.

On a similar subject is there a way to "break up" the checker board pattern on some of the grass textures?
Thanks, Roger.

Edit: Hooray, found this post. "If you hold down the [ or ] key while 'texturing' then you don't get the pattern effect caused by some textures and the result is a totally random effect. Try it. It works!"

Ocala,

Rotate the brush as you put down the texture. It's slow work but it avoids the pattern repeats.

hi StorkNest,

after resizing the map to 367 x 367 how to paste the same on to the basemap in the Surveyor ? Can u please throw some light on this ?

thnx

OK, after you have it resized, you have to find which Basemap you want, there's nine from A-I. I use 2004 so I use TrainzObjectz to locate them. You could also use Explorer, you have to navigate your Downloads folder and remember which KUID to look for. I don't know what 2006 uses.

Find the image in the folder that starts with "1km basemap" and open it. Take you resized image and place it in the basemap image with the upper left corners matching. You should have space on the bottom and right. Save.

When you go into TRS, place the proper basemap onto the baseboard and line up the one corner so the image fills the baseboard. That extra space you had will not be near the baseboard, only the image you pasted.

Or use MapMaker 3i , then you can do 12 baseboards at a time , with the correct part of the map lying 1m under each baseboard.

Could u use google Earth for Image files.

Has any one tried using Google Earth images on a layout. Does it look ok?

The 1km basemaps are 1km square so any map you wish to import onto it needs to be of a 1km square area. I use streetmap.co.uk as eack square is 1km. save the image and convert to a jpg file no resizing. Find the basemap folders and put them into a new folder in your world/custom folder for ease of finding. Open your selected image then "save as" select the basemap folder and 1km square image. this replaces the original with your map. In surveyor when you select the basemap your image will be on it.

OK, after resizing to 367x367, you go to the appropriate Baemap folder from the ones available in your /Dispatcher/Downloads folder.

1km Basemap A 119912:60004:2
1km Basemap B 119912:60005:2
1km Basemap C 119912:60006:2
1km Basemap D 119912:60007:2
1km Basemap E 119912:60008:2
1km Basemap F 119912:60009:2
1km Basemap G 119912:60010:2
1km Basemap H 119912:60011:2
1km Basemap I 119912:60012:2

in that folder are 2 images, a screenshot (you don't want this) and 1km square X where X is the letter. Open the second and paste your resized image in, matching the upper right corners up. You will have some extra blue on the right side and bottom but that is OK. Save as the same file name and type, 1km square X.JPG.

When you go into TRS, place the Basemap and match up the corner of it to the baseboard and that's it. The extra blue on the Basemap is not on any part of a single baseboard, only your image is. Normally, you then lower the basemap below the grid level, usually to -1.10 to -1.30 then just make the grid transparent and you can see the image and place items above it. It gets a little more tricky if working with non-flat terrain but should still be doable.

Hi SandBag,

Yes I use screengrabs from Google Earth.
I use the Google Earth 'ruler' & 'line/path' tools; to lay a 1-kilometer line
vertically on the left-hand side of the view, then take a screengrab.

Then using Irfanview, I crop the image to exactly match that line, so I get a 1Km square pic.
This is then saved (named appropriately), & I then replace the default
basemap pic. of each basemap, with the appropriate cropped screengrab.

I then position just a few of the basemaps, being careful to align them properly.
As an aid to alignment, in Google I turn on the lat/long display grid; so that on each screengrab you have that grid too.

The basemaps I lower below the layout, & then in Surveyor, using the "F9" key, I alternate between texture/no-texture, so I can see where to place buildings etc etc.

It's a great way to see what foliage is there too, & to check elevations.

Roy (sorry forgotten name) is doing a fantastic job on the Sydney & environs railway network, using Google Earth, in combination with the Sydney mapping; available on CD.

:)

How you would do this in TransDEM:
  1. Zoom and pan in Google Earth window to select your image.
  2. Create a placemark.
  3. Save image and placemark.
  4. In TransDEM open image and accompanying placemark to automatically georeference image.
  5. Click TransDEM commands to convert to UTM and to save georeferenced image.
  6. Repeat for a couple of more images.
  7. In TransDEM open all georeferenced images again and drag a mask around them.
  8. Export as UTM tiles ("basemaps") to your Trainz map. TransDEM will create the tile objects and automatically place them at the correct position in the map.
  9. Done. Open Surveyor and start using GE imagery.

Sounds like a lot of work but bet it helps make great routes.

Is it possible to use the 1KM image as a 1Km texture? Would this help make route building easier?

Hello,
Excellent tutorial.

For anybody using TRS2006.
For TRS2006 you would want to replace the step in the tutorial that is right above the image and starts with "Save the new image to your hard disk..." with the following:

Open Content Manager Plus.
Under Installed tab, select the object "1km Basemap (letter)".
Right click object and under edit select edit in explorer.
Copy in jpg file as instructed in the tutorial.
Right click object and under edit select commit.

-Based on your pic you know how to do most of this.

Thanks,
Steve
