Railworks 2 - Any good?

Plus as an ex-fitter i can say with some authority, that the diesel physics are pure fiction.

Mike.

Asked about the new Class 170 over at UKTS and had it confirmed, uses the same "arcade" physics as the Class 166 and Class 158. Money staying in the pocket for that one, keep it for Sly's Duchess instead.

Yes Steve and RS.com also charge a fortune for everything they release mate.

Really, the Trainz Blue Comet has just been released for the same price as a lot of RW content, so, hardly a fortune.

It`s a payware platform for raking in money, probably something that was decided on from day one.

No different to a lot of Trainz creators for the last umpteen years or so. Since day one the Americans who set up websites have been charging for their Trainz content, very nearly every locomotive created by Virtual Motive Division, Jointed Rail and RRMods has to be purchased, World of Trains from Phil Campbell, eldavo (Dave Renshaw) charged us for his UK locomotives the same with the "Peaks" by Perchpole, George Danzey-Smith had a freight wagon webiste, Railwaves also have one for their coaching stock, locomotives and signals, the Polish charge for their steam locomotives, the same with a few British creators, the Hungarians charged for their authentic layout, the Italians charged us for their renditions of Rollins Pass and West of Denver layouts, with scenery to match, the Murchison route was Payware, also Josef Pav and Lothar Hake's Marias Pass route, there are the Swiss electric locos from Yojimbo and I also have TRS2007 German version with Payware add-ons from ProTrainzPerfect, so, nobody is immune to charging customers, Trainz creators have been doing it for many, many years.

You also might have brand new locos that do not need "faffing about" with.

Not just brand new locos, it's EVERY item of scenery, rolling stock, locomotives, etc, it's up to scratch before it gets downloaded, there are no config.txts in the folders, because, none are needed to be amended.

But the sounds are crap, the steam effects are rubbish.

Initially, yes, I would agree, but, they are all being updated and sound much better and the chuffs are now in line with the wheel turns and wheel slips, it's getting there, slowly.

Plus as an ex-fitter i can say with some authority, that the diesel physics are pure fiction.

Very true, a problem that has existed since the outset, but, as it is a core problem, it's nothing that the game players can do about it.

Mike.

All hobbies cost money, my mate's been an avid model railway freak in his attic, he's spent thousands of pounds in over 40 years, I will never, ever spend that much in my lifetime, what I've spent my money on I still enjoy playing with, people say that it's expensive, but, say over 10 years, or, so, it's great value and to me is worth every penny.
Your puchases will last longer than the machines you play it on, and in this day and age, even my mobile phone costs me more than my railway simulator stuff over a year, and that is never value for money.......:hehe:

Cheerz. Steve.

One thing that i've noticed is the lack of activities/scenarios. I want a good run with a class37, not shunting like the ones seem to be provided. Upon looking on UKTS there seems to be few activities for the 37 and the few that there are require a lot of payware..

Thats my main gripe at present :(

Hi Vern,

i will keep mine for the Auran Princess. :)

I am assuming that Railworks does not have as many assets available, as does Trainz.

You can see what this guy has achived using railworks on a pretty realistic Altoona Johnstown route. There are some discrepencies, but then again he is all he way over in Norway, far away from the prototype. I have offered to assist him with research on the prototype.

I was watching a Railworks video that was so funny, but can't post the link as the guy was swearing all the time throughout: "Oh this is just boring, more boring than taking the actual train ... This is not a video game ... this is absolutely boring ... lets just crash things" !

No config files, but there are 'blueprints' that need to be setup for every asset. If you make a mistake in them then they can, and do, cause problems.
There was recently a loco that was released for free that caused lots of people's game to crash every time they tried to use it.

It is not some glorious content utopia, trust me I've bashed my head against the wall to make some ;)

Honestly the more i read on the forum about RW2 the more i`m sticking with Auran , Just tried yet again to start from a blank canvas the more i`m confused and frustated , I cant even get a simple circular track to join up, yes i`ve read manual (for what good it is ) symbols of magnets ect to snap the rails ect ( they join up themselves in Trans ) I really need a set of instructions in janet & john language ie 1 you do this and 2 you do this ect

I did quite a bit of headbanging myself. The BIN files are the RW equivalent to config.txt, the GeoPcDx are the equivalent of PM or IM, and TgPcDx are the texture files. Using RW-Tools it's possible to hack them all, I converted a German log car, a DB101 and a BR294 to use US knuckle couplers.

As for trying it out to see for yourself, no time like the present;

$20 bucks US for the game with an addon Challenger that normally costs $20 bucks by itself - even if you don't like the game at all you're only out $20 bucks instead of $50.

Mike.

Good point, had forgotten about that one. Will look the bee's knees hooked up behind 15 maroon or blood and custard Mark One's.

As an aside, I think I've finally hit the sweet spot getting TS2009 running acceptably on the laptop. At least so far on a test route I've got 3km textured out to 4 or 5km from the track (using the new TS2009 textures which put the RW ones in the shade), various foliage and lineside items/splines placed and thus far no evidence of the performance crawl which by that stage thwarted all my earlier attempts to use TS2009.

The solution? Manually adjusting the Nvidia settings according to a guide I found in an earlier thread. If the improvement stands then I can't see me going back to the confusticated and unwieldy RW at all.

Pointer to that thread? I'm wasting a lot of time trying settings, re-running a test route etc., still comes down to a choice of slow framerate with no jerking or decent framerate but jerking every second or so.

I have Railworks but I have found it to a big pain in the....
Trainz is much easier for everything, from route buiding to just going for a drive. The ONLY advenage Railworks has over Trainz is that the routes/buildings/rolling stock change depending on what weather you select

I tried searching for it earlier but ratted if I can find it now. It *might* still be in the IE history on my laptop if it's less than three weeks ago, but currently at work so won't be able to check until tomorrow.

As I said, once we find it, the information definitely ought to be stickied as it vastly improved TS2009 - I've now textured and primary 3D'ed about 8 miles of my route and no performance drop out as previous.

A couple of questions

I am thinking of getting Railworks 2, I was wondering if you can design your own scenarios for current routes and whether you can give commands to AI trains just like all the "Trainz" have let you do?

That's the one!

Mods - can we possibly have those settings extracted and stickied as a guide to Nvidia optimisation?
