Railworks 2 - Any good?

Took one look at UKTS today, full of sycophantic rubbish and lost track of the number of times one of the RSC techs pops up, "email support as we don't do forums" but actually seems to spend most of his time on there...

No contest deciding what route to work on after walkies, a nice little (actually 55 mile) Norwegian route in TRS2006 which I will polish in TS2010 before releasing. It seems to be my happy place at the moment, not really bothered about how the points look - as Mike/IKB suggests the overall track appearance is what counts and even the 2m concrete grey looks better than RW's Hornby "Super 4" track.

Saw those posts from the "private poster", who continually refers to "we" don't do this and "we" don't give support on forum. ;)

Obviously i would like to see properly rendered junctions, points etc in Trainz, Vern.

But it is not a game breaker for me personally.

Hahahahaha, like the reference to the Hornby Super 4 track.

I thought RW track, was more like that plastic stuff in "The Big Big Train Set" that was released by Triang in 1966. :D

Good luck with the route.

Mike.

The most disgusting thing is this whole hand shuffling with the HST brakes, they've finally admitted that they're broken (at first he blamed windows 7), now they're saying 'next code update', which btw will be december because they're focusing all of their 'fixing' attention on 'fixing' the copy protection, since rebranding as RW2 brought the attention of the major piracy groups and RW2's copy protection (yes, the one that has caused countless of us to have major problems with the stuff we've paid for) was broken by the pirates within 18 hours.

I know, but they WILL manage to make my IHH Class 45 only show up intermittently in RW2 and then have the gall to accuse me of being a pirate when I complain about this

Yup you are a customer Nikki, in the RSC scheme of things. You are at best someone to be tolerated, at worst a real inconvenience. ;)

I must admit though i never had any problems with my DLC, IHH or DT add ons disappearing. But i am very close to uninstalling it all again, due to the stinking attitude of RSC.

Mike.

the overall track appearance is what counts
Here in the US train service employees are taught right from the start to ascertain which way a switch is lined by looking at the points (basic railroading in the states) which when operating on “other than main track” is obviously important.

With the way Trainz displays switch points it's pretty much written off as far as simulating US railroad operations right from the start just from this issue alone.

even the 2m concrete grey looks better than RW's Hornby "Super 4" track.
Not that it doesn't have a lot of other issues simulating railroad operations, as far as how track looks, RailWorks is pretty capable (depending on who's doing the modeling of course). With ScaleRail there is no problem with seeing which way a switch is lined and overall is probably some of the best track available for any train game/sim out there.

Looks good Mike until you get to the switches.

Are there multiple textures for mainline and yard tracks or is it all the same?

Click Image for Big pic :)

Switches look fine to me, of course, I'm not using the 'auto-junction' there, and actually spending an extra 20 seconds to lay a switch down...

As for track, lets be honest, there are hundreds of alternatives for tracks in trainz, many of them extremely pretty to look at, for various different tasks.

Railworks? You need to pay for IOW/Garl/WCML to get the 'good' tracks, and hope that the freeware route creators chose the same 'good track' payware you did...

Thanks for posting the screen shot.

That's the first time I think I've seen decent looking switch points in Trainz. Would it be easy to change say the track in the SnC route to the track that Mike is showing in his screen shots.

Wow, the more I read about RW the more and more glad I am that I never bought it. I seriously don't think I'd accept it if one offered it to me for free.

let me put this in perspective for all you people who don't like Railworks iv had trainz for a number of years but iv also had Railworks since it was released. now if i want to build a route i can use trainz or RW it would depend on what mood im in i.e. if i want to build a narrow gauge route i would use trainz because there is more narrow gauge content for it, but if i was in the mood to build a standard gauge route i would use RW hands down because it for me looks better than trainz it may not have as much content as trainz but want content it does have looks better than anything you will ever get in trainz. now if i wanted to do some driving 9 times out of 10 i would use RW instead of trainz why you ask well it is miles more realistic in almost every way possible, but with trainz i find that the driving experience is quite poor and because of this when i drive in trainz i will only use the dcc option because the cab control option just does not cut it.

Hiya Dan,

forgot you was djt mate. :hehe:

There is a rusty varient of the track, that i use in yards.

In regards RW, Scalerail is the best by far.

There are also some really bad track textures in Trainz, but the good ones can give RW a run for it's money. ;)

It is easy to put the UK Bullhead 09 track into S&C, just use the "substitute assets function" in Surveyor.

You may have to adjust the terrain in some places.

Due to the S&C default track having an extra deep edge to the ballast.

regards,
Mike.

That's interesting seeing as the train handling physics are more realistic with the “cab” mode in TRS2009/TS2010 then they are in RailWorks by a long shot.

Thanks Mike, how about the switches? Are there any switches available for download similar to what NikkiA has shown that have working switch points?

To be honest Dan, i do not take much interest in the availability of the "fixed track sections", sorry.

I did lay the andi06 ones in a route a few years back, but found them difficult to use.

So i gave it up as a bad job and went back to using splined track.

Also i think but am not completely sure, you have to use matching track.

Or the fixed sections will stand out like a sore thumb. :D

I am pretty sure there is nothing to match the UK Bullhead 09 track, that i use.

regards,
Mike.

do you own RW.... . I work on the railways for a living the train handling physics in TRS2009/2010 come no where near the word realistic, Railworks may not be bang on with the physics but they are a dam site better than the physics in trainz will every be
