Question on Allen McClelland's V&O Afton Division

MKT Forever and always
I'm currently playing around with Cincysouthernrwy's wonderful V&O Afton Division, and i am trying to develop a "normal" traffic flow for the route. What has bothered me is this: i don't know the orientation of the railroad in general (north-south or east-west) and i don't know its location in relation to the Gauley Division, which is where the line to Sunrise on the Alleghany Midland Veers off. That could determine wether the two AM symbol freights, the Florida Perishable and the Hot Rod, move over the railroad. I don't have my stacks of old 70's 80's and early 90's MR back-issues here with me (from my Grandfather, mind you) so i can't go reference it myself. I seem to recall from the issue where Mr. McClelland said he was tearing down the Gualey Division that the V&O crossed the Ohio River, yet i also seem to recall the AM moving tide coal, which would imply i met the Atlantic somewhere, right?

It's not like i would die if i don't have this information, i just thought i'd ask. The V&O is my idol layout; it's what i hope to achieve in my own dream layout. To have the layout i grew up watching on Great Model Railroads VHS tapes and in old issues of MR in trainz answers a bit of a prayer. Its great to run it in trainz; and to just run it willy nilly just doesn't seem fitting.

Now that i think about it, this might not be the proper place for this, but then again, this doesn't quite fit anywhere else either.

I don't know much about the V&O, but I do know that the AM ran both lake and tide coal, so yes, it would have met the Atlantic.

I dont know ether, but I might suggest looking at some of your old Model Railroaders if you still have them. And see how Allen McClelland ran his layout. What is operating sessions where like. The you could try to make your Trainz session more like his.

very true. I might have to go dig through them tomorrow. Right now i'm trying to work out the KC&B. start small, i guess:D

The V&O ran mostly east-west.
Afton Division the first layout covered the Eastern end owned by the railroad not counting trackage/overhead rights over another railroad to Norfolk on the Atlantic shore.
The AM ran mostly north-south, the V&O connection is the southern end and was on both layouts that were done. On the first layout, the AM connection was at the western end, on Gauley it is at the eastern.
Gauley starts from the western end of the Afton Division and head west but there is a lot more west of it not shown.
There are areas of the V&O never modeled going from WV into OH except for a small representation of Dayton once done for the son of the V&O creator.
The VM is another mostly north-south route plus a line into Hazard, KY.

So Jimtown was the end of the "actual" V&O? hmm. I'll have to look around the layout more today. For now i'll take the Gauley division as the point where the AM connected to the V&O. I think the WV is on the layout cincy made, but i'm not sure.

No, sorry if I confused you.
Afton is the Eastern end of owned trackage in Virginia.
Here's is a link to the unofficial AM Historical Society, click the map on the right to enlarge it.

The western end of the V&O in Ohio is not completely shown.
Note there are different maps of the V&O, AM and VM with some differences, this one is accurate about the AM route (the map is by the AM designer, other AM maps leave out the line to Connelsville) and certain V&O details.
The V&O designer had two differences from this map.
1 - The route to Danville on other V&O maps starts in Afton.
2 - The trackage rights to Newport News originally did not go over the C&O, they went over the CB&O another fictional route designed by another modeler.
Plus there was another fictional route connecting in Afton, the Grand Valley.

Ah yes, i saw the grand Valley connection in Afton. I've been using it as a C&O interchange (since i've got a C&O F7 A-B built in) That map actually explains a lot. Thanks for that. Now i know where the traffic goes (i think)

ugh..time to get down and dirty and push heavy freight over Highland with a bunch of RSD-12s (with a cameo by some 2-8-8-2s, as well!!!)
