Pennsylvania Railroad 1361 Rebuild Cancelled!!

No April Fools joke, this is the real deal

The Altoona museum has finally decided to cancel the rebuild of 1361 currently sitting at Strasburg. In the next few months and years, the locomotive will return home to Altoona, and be reassembled for Static display. However the Boiler will be fired up now and then to build enough pressure for the whistle.

I think this is a good call, because at least 1361 will be back in the public eye, and back in 1 piece.

But since so much of the work did get done, with only boiler work left to do, there is still a chance that maybe in the future, the funds will be available to finished the work and bring her back to life. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

No one ever though RGS 20 would ever steam again, and she is still indeed a top priority at the Colorado Railroad Museum, so never say never.

That would be a novel idea, that they would build a fire, and operate the whistle...even though they say it "might happen", or they "would like to"...I seriously doubt that #1361 will ever be fired up, ever, at all. Insurance liabilities would curtail such risky activities. Even the noise factor could cause permanent hearing loss, and many lawsuits from patrons.

The Altoona RR Memorial Museum has always been a losing business, and several major volunteers have permanently pulled out, as the Management and Curator of the museum has a lengthly bad reputation of serious disgruntled "fall outs" with volunteers.

As a sidenote: The Alto Tower is in the plans of being relocated to the museum grounds, if and when, NS eventually decides that shutdown and demolishion is warranted. But it is falling apart, and may not survive the relocation process.

Not to be a "Doubting Thomas" but Pennsylvania, on a whole, is in serious distress, and in an economic downturn. Cities are laying of police, fire, sanitation, and transit workers. Steamtown is a shamefull state, with little, or no funds whatsoever. Maybe after December 22nd 2012...things may improve. <---(Myan calander prediction)

what?

what? i last heared of 1361 when i was at altoona visting the horseshoe curve. is the museum still going to restore the k4 in altoona?

No, operational plans are canceled.

The locomotive will cosmetically restored in Altoona, but will not operate under her own power

Painted on the back of the boiler. "I've done my service, now let me rest in piece."

I saw it this weekend.

I saw the article too in Trains Mag. Sad, but true testament to the way things are today. There is no longer a love for anything other than the all mighty dollar. You'd think that the company involved in the boiler might think of donating some of the work for the rebuilding. Afterall this is a museum and not a big railroad or company.

there is still hope the k4 can restore to steam. heck if i owned the the 1361 i would have strasburg do the restoration.

it is siting at steamtown.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Personally, I am glad that they are restoring that CNJ 0-8-0 (113) in Minersville.

Now, if someone could get 2101 up and running again, that would be great.

it is siting at steamtown.

So is alot of crap that is rotting. Like I said, I was just there. While disassembled, the K4 at least looks better than most of the stuff that they have. There are wooden cars rotting, locomotives rotting, things falling apart, it is a shame. BTW, the K4 looks exactly like it did for the past several years. Trust me, it is dead.

From the article: "Instead, Salone will present a plan to the board this week that calls for the famous locomotive to be running by early next year - not necessarily fast or on the open tracks pulling excursions - but under its own steam, at least."

While I admire his optimism, the fact that he hopes to get it done in one year when it has already taken a decade is a little bit jaw-dropping. If this actually happens, then I will remove three of my own vertibre, keel my spine back and eat my own rear.

(Cue the n00b saying "it sh00d go to STRASBURG RAILROAD!!1!")

What a shame, because I rode behind the K4 on a special excursion at York, PA in August, 1988 over the Ma & Pa line toward Hanover. It only went part way then reversed with a PRR diesel switcher leading the return. In fact, there were several steam locomotives operating in PA in 1988 that are no longer operating, like Reading #2102, now in storage at Port Clinton on the Reading and Northern, out of service since Oct 1991, they owned it since 1986, and PRR #1223 and #7002 used to operate on Strasburg but were retired to the museum of PA in 1989 or 1990.

I can't wait to see how that 0-8-0 turns out, it's looking great so far!

Dude first off. Just stop talking, nothing you say makes any sense. Secondly, learn how to spell(Hell the computer will do that for you!)

I Hate...Actually I Would Love To Say It

As good as an idea as that sounds. It ain't gonna happen. Pennsylvania Railroad 1223 and 7002 (8063) haven't steamed since the 80s and well the chances of them with 1361 is like a GG-1 electric getting restored. Stop the insanity and just think before you post. I would love to see them steam again, but thank goodness for videos of when they did steam. As I've said before, not every steam locomotive can go to Strasburg you thunder clap. (Not to be offensive.) The problem is you...not them. They are busy and besides with increasing freight traffic on the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad main line, do you think the Norfolk Southern Railway will stop traffic to allow a steam special to pass. No way, it ain't going to happen, so you might as well think it over and just think of another railroad museum to do it. You're too lazy to save money to go see any steamer, you want it to come to you. Heck, I want to go to Steamtown up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but I don't want the equipment to come to me. They are in there places respectively and you just are a spoiled brat who wants everything to come to them. You are a...spoiled child. So, stop saying what should go where. When the railroads retired and sent steam locomotives to where they would be preserved at...most are still there, but some have moved. But, in order for Strasburg to have every preserved steamer, they'd have to buy a whole LOT of land from the Amish. You big doof need to understand railroading doesn't revolve around you and steam locomotives will go where they are intended...so do us a freakin' favor and stop with all this ding-dong-garbage.
You're so spoiled...I could say you're a...

...Veruca Salt of sorts. No one report the image. I'm just proving how spoiled he is. Lets face it everyone...he is.

No doubt the basic idea would be great. Another steam locomotive revived regardless is great. However something like he has said will never happen. And why does everything have to go to Strasburg? Strasburg isn't that great just like every other museum or company that runs steam locomotives. They have faults just like every other company around the world. Strasburg is not god, and nor is any other organization or company.

And does Strasburg really need more equipment? The yard is already crammed full, where do ya think they are going to put all this other stuff?

Easy, he's thinking about placing them on the dark side of the moon.
