Newly retired and back with Trainz.

Bruce,

Welcome back and I wish you a most happy retirement.

I'm supposed to be retired too, but I seem never to have been busier!

You asked "Now - what is a prototype North American route that anyone can recommend for me?"

I would really like to see the entire CNJ route (with crossing routes and portals) so I could take the unbelievably beautiful CNJ Blue Comet for a spin from
Communipaw Terminal, Jersey City to Atlantic City. As I know absolutely nothing about US railroads (my speciality is British and Irish steam), I would not know where to start myself.

However, the Blue Comet set (loco, tender and carriages) from Auran (as digitally downloadable content) is so beautiful and the carriages so plush that I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to see a suitable route for it. This train deserves no less.

As it's quite a long route, maybe you could start off with a part (one of the two terminals leading out of town or a beautiful coastal stretch along the way).

What do you think? I'll happily beta-test any part of it you wish, though I'll need help with suitable locos and rolling stock for the correct operating period

Peter.

 Wow ! That's a come back, guy :) !
Nice to see some oldies back ;) !
Hope you will enjoy it again !
Cheers,
Philippe

Welcome back, Bruce!

I'm glad to see another old-name on the boards again. Retirement is fun. You'll soon forget about work as you do the things always wanted to do but never had the time for them.

I too am in retirement. A forced one at that, but that's a long story for another day.

Time for another classic like Robe River, Bruce?!
You flatter me, Vern! :)

I've been browsing the Download Station to see if any of my favourites in MSTS are also available in Trainz and was surprised to see that most are not represented.
Those routes include the Feather River route, the Canadian Pacific's Kicking Horse Pass route and the excellent Milwaukee Road Rocky Mt. Division route.
I'd love to do one of those but I'd need the DEM data in order to do so.

But it's early days and I need to relearn the Surveyor methodology and take small steps first, so maybe something smaller......I did "Crawford Hill" back in 2004 - a section of the coal-hauling line in Nebraska, about 25 miles in length.
So maybe something of a similar length to start with.

Bruce.

You asked "Now - what is a prototype North American route that anyone can recommend for me?"
Sorry, Peter.....you misunderstood my question.
I meant, for me to download and operate, not for me to create! :)

But what you have described certainly sounds interesting.

Bruce

Welcome back Bruce.

Robe River was the first and only built-in route that I ever ran end to end in Trainz!

If you want to see what Trainz is now capable of, take a look at the screenshots thread for the Canadian Rocky Mountains layout by Joosten (Roy Joosten). It's payware, huge (HUGE), and is being released section by section. I'd be surprised if it doesn't go through Kicking Horse Pass, but if not, the landscape is very similar. He's been building it since TRS2004 days but only released it recently now that it's up to TS12 standards.

p.s. I found a link here which indicates he has done Kicking Horse Pass

Welcome back Bruce, I used that Robe River route extensively when I bought TRS04 so many years ago. I am sure your new created content will turn out similar, to please us all. Also happy retirement, I retired some 8 - 9 years ago, I never looked back to these working days nor am I complaining of ever getting bored since I retired. My content creating keeps me alert, makes me think and in general, fills in my days with more than enough "work" to keep me happy.

Cheers

hello bruce just leting you know that the shortcut keys from old 2004 are still the same in 2012 :) so if you still have your old shortcut keys poster from 2004 use it if you got to re-cap :) good luck & happy building.

P.S if you don't have it your can get it from here :)
Thank you, Mr. Boomer.
I don't "do" social media such as Facebook or Twitter, so cannot get to it via that link.
I've been back through several CDs of backed-up files of Trainz "stuff" and other than having a lovely time reminiscing I couldn't find a short-cut guide.
Never mind - I'll get used to Surveyor.

You ARE "the man"!!! :D
Thank you very much for the information and the link.
I have just ordered the full package. After drooling over the screen-shots, I couldn't resist. :)

Guess I'll now have to equip myself with some CP locos and 'stock.

Thank you, Mr. Barbarino. :) This is like a "Welcome Back, Kotter" episode! :D
Like you, I have not had one moment's boredom since leaving work last August. Too many hobbies and interests to even do them all justice!

Regards,
Bruce

Oh, I'm sorry to put you to all that trouble Paul....I have that in the Anniversary pack I bought last week.
Many thanks for the thought, however, and I apologise for the confusion.

Poul,

On behalf of those without the anniversary pack, thanks! Very handy.

Peter.

Just a note to say "hello again" after an absence of six years from Trainzing.
Just recently added the 10th. Anniversary edition - Trainz 2006 was my last purchase.
No great plans at this stage but, with more time on my hands than ever before in nearly 50 years, I thought I might look at doing something constructive with Trainz.

The last major effort was Robe River Iron, which was subsequently improved by another fan.
Then I did a bit of work with the Oberon branchline which was also picked up by someone else....I don't know if they ever finished it.

Anyway, I'll have a bit of a potter with Surveyor when the mood strikes and see what I can conjure up.

Cheers!
Bruce

Hi, just wanted to thank you for your work on Robe River Iron. I loved that route as a child and now I work in the railways in the real world. Every bit of inspiration goes a long way I suppose.
