@ Casper - sweet, love your pretend water trick - very convincing!!

@ mikelj - tunnels in Trainz are a challenge - nicely done!

Thanks Andy.

However, it’s “real” water.

I’m rebuilding the city scene as it was in the 1950/60s.

I fancied a bit of creativity in the midst of raising the terrain by hand over a 1:500 historical map and Google Earth imagery. That’s why DEM is so good for the wider view!

But for the closer fine scale stuff, particularly old landscaping, like filled in cuttings and long gone old roads in the city centre modern map elevation just won’t do. Hand raising seems to be the only way. Tedious or what!

It was a welcome change to divert and do a bit of “colouring in” for a few minutes.

Right. Back to those topology tools!

No need for an apology Andy.;)

I had no ripple effect set on the water. Our local rivers are very still, so “glassy” is the right option in the World flyout. Because “real” water reflects the sky, the colour and tone is very similar to the plain grey texture method. This sky, one of my own, has no heavily defined clouds so there is not much going on reflection-wise.

In this shot I’ve set the water selection to “rough”. The moving water effect doesn't look right at all for this locality in Surveyor & Driver. However, for a screenshot it gives an illusion of a still water reflection and seems to work quite well.

Hey MPrezzo where did you get that beautiful cathedral in the background. Ive looked on the DLS under Abby, Cathedral but there dosnt seem to be anything. Your screenies are the tops with plenty of atmosphere and excellent composition. Are you an artist? and if you are, you could be making money from turning your shots into large paintings.

Hi Laird. Thanks for your encouraging comments.

The cathedral was kitbashed from various bits to make it look as close a match to Salisbury Cathedral as I could achieve. It is an iconic feature of the City and visible from all of the major trunk roads and railway. There is a sketchup version available, but I lack the skills to import it into Trainz.

What I’ve used in the screenshots is Truro Cathedral <kuid:179051:100810> from the DLS, excellently made by marky7890, with a few repeated roofs from a church to raise the roofline. I created the spire by using the raise terrain tool on minimum radius and spiked it up to 123.14m (404ft). Truro is only 250ft tall.

Here’s the “building”. The smaller spires on the West front are a little too high, but it gives a reasonable representation and is a good navigational landmark in Surveyor when building.

I’m not an artist. I did do art at school 50 plus years ago, but haven’t done any formal studying. I just move the assets around and hit a few keys. If it turns out OK I’m usually happy, but after posting there’s nearly always something I can see which could have been done better.

The artist John Constable did get to portray that view nearly two hundred years ago. I wonder if he would have enjoyed Trainz and the ability to move around his picture?
