Maybe a little more elaborate use of the spacebar would be in order? :hehe: Specially between Vintage and Modelers...

@Pencil42: Personally I'm too mostly interested in the time period between the two world wars. Not only american though, also in my own country the netherlands. There where numerous railroad companies in those days over here. They all used the word 'tram' in their names, but applied normal gauge (1425mm) for their operations.

"Over the Hill Gang" is Taken...

LWVRR emailed a heads-up about this thread (since my PM inbox was full... sorry!) Sounds interesting, I'd be honored to join. (But not to organize, please, I always end up as Secretary-Treasurer! Talk about left holding the bag...)

I do like the old prototypes, and also just making things work in 3D. Feeling the tug of 3D printing, but probably have a year or two before that settles down and Trainz content creation gets too demanding for a mere hobbyist. (And who knows, in a couple of years 3D printing may come up with something to make beyond knobby plastic tchotchkes.)

So count me in, please, if anyone's counting. Age: 62, not yet fully retired (g); been doing computer 3D since Bill Budge.

Hi Jananton,

OK, went back and included spacebars. Happy?:hehe:

Actually, thank you for pointing this out for me. I'm keeping the list in MSword and it appears for some reason that the first space does not appear to carry over when a copy and space is done to carry it over to the forum. I'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks.:)

Friends,

Seems to me that in choosing a name first, we are putting the e-cart before the e-horse. I think, before the name, we ought to spend more time on the mission of the group. In all candor, if it to be just another third party content hosting site, I'm less interested than if it's to be a gathering point for the old hands to pass along their acquired knowledge. I'm more interested (and see a greater need for) a site where new creators can tap the old timers for aid and assistance ind developing their skillset than in the creation of one more site for third party content. And since there is little quality documentation for the game, not to mention the game engine, I also see a strong need for a place for people to conduct and contribute to organized testing. For example, I want very much to know how lighting works in game. A thorough test of the effects of lights in different situations can go a long ways towards overcoming the deficit in the documentation about what to do with lighting to get the best effects in game.

What the community does not need (in my opinion, anyway) is yet another third party hosting site that will break up in a public way at some point, as one of the established groups seems to be doing at this very time.

I beg to differ, Jananton. Most of us 'old............er' folks are from post war upbringing; and see that period as a break from what preceeded it. It's fine if you want to bring in the times of tycoons and elegant ladies, but in truth that's a niche that most of us reject as much as we reject a Peacock struttin' down Mian Street.

I've been really busy with work lately but just noticed the PM. It is an interesting idea. So how does one actually join the group?

The group is forming as we speak. Actually I'm working on getting all the founding members (including yourself if you want) together first.

While I toatally agree with the point being made here, we're going to have to call this group something to start? Even if it just a temporary name.

Important Note

Now for the hard part...
To all the folks that are joining this group--- PM with the following:
1.your username
2.your first name only
3.your email address
4.your specialty...content creator, repainter, layout designer, and so on. If you are a content creator, say what program you are using for your modeling. If you are joining to learn just put general interest down.
5.your current Trainz version

I've emptied my message box so there should be plenty of room.

Go!

1. I sent you a message
2. For a group name, why not something short and cute, like, hell I do not know, Friends of The Laurel Line?

NS - I agree with your principals too. I think it's best that we keep our group here on the forums as that would benefit everyone else that we assist.

If we meet here, we could put our eventual name in our signature areas like this. "Official Member of the...." We could even have a small logo next to the name if we want.

I beg to differ, Jananton. Most of us 'old............er' folks are from post war upbringing; and see that period as a break from what preceeded it. I'm not really sure with what you beg to differ actually. :hehe: If you mean my reply to Pencil42's post earlier, that's just my personal interest, for a big part based on dutch railroad devellopments. Those where times of big changes and diversity in railroad operation as well as in used stock over here. My knowledge of american railroad history is much more scetchy, so if that period wasn't that intersting on the other side of the pond. so be it.

Btw, my little person was build in 1953, so I'm no warchild either. ;)

Personally I think the period the group should aim for must be much broader then just the between wars era and shouldn't focus on a too specific timeframe.
I like the train of thought mjolnir posted earlier, where he mentions the focus should be on sharing the knowledge acquired by experience and use of software to create items, to document this, and in such a way make all the ins and outs of the creation process much more accessable for others who want to have a go at this themselves as well as for group members of course.

Greetings from sunny Amsterdam,

Perhaps I misunderstood you; picking a niche between the wars. Post WWII Europe was rebuilding it's railways, and a fine railway system it is. I've had the oportunity to travel on your 'spoorwagons' and Britains railways also. Here in the US, the railways had a heck of a time adjusting to peacetime economics. While Europe was building its fine system, the US was cutting back service, abandoning routes and passengers alike. The automobile and an interstate highway system
brought the railroads nearly to their knees. True, the era 1935 to 1950 was a time of change; diesel trumped steam. But it's precisely that period when they existed side by side.
I have a great affinity fot the steam era. I sailed steamboats; know how it works. No more steamboats today; well almost. The great irony is that most steamboats sailing today are nuclear, and under water.

I've been distracted this past week with medical issues, so just found this topic.

WWII to 1960 is the era of greatest interest to me.

With Trainz 2004 and HOG I had some success in recreating the Boston & Albany, the road I remember from my childhood. The B&A was the proving ground for the 0-8-4 Berkshire, and the North Adams Branch (Pittsfield MA. to North Adams MA.) connected with the Boston & Maine near the western end of the Hoosic Tunnel.

I have 35mm slides of my brother and myself watching the unloading of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey circus train in Pittsfield, c 1956; I believe this was the last year Ringling Brothers traveled under the Big Top. In the background of one shots is the Pittsfield beautiful marble passenger station, demolished long ago and now a super market.

To recapture this would bring much of happiness.

After years of not being able to do much with computers, I am once again venturing into my old hobby. My current system will ( just barely ) run 2010 ( I think) so 2012 and later will not happen until I can afford a better machine. I took the plunge and ordered the boxed 2010 Heritage Pack.

I have blender ( just starting what looks like a steep learning curve ) and plan on getting Transdem. So I would fall into the category of those most interested in learning from any tutorials to bring me up to the 'content creator' capabilities.

Hi Allypup 2. Couldn't help but notice your location. I'm presently working a TS12 route from the Hoosac Tunnel east portal along the Deefield River, thru Deerfield and east thru Millers Falls and Athol. I have future plans for a route from North Adams to Pittsfield and Springfield, which includes B&M, New Haven, and B&A trackage. If I can be of any help with TransDEM or route maps, give shout.

I'm slowly going through the PM's. Make sure your send your info if you haven't already. You will get a return PM once your info is logged in.

At this time there are only 10 on the confirmed list so I know these is more folks out there...PM your info as soon as you can. As soon as I get this list together then we can move on to other details.
