Be careful when working with layers.
They are quite useful in developing routes for multiple seasons, or other scenarios where you want different objects to appear in different sessions.
But, if you are working in Surveyor, and unknowingly placing trees on the track layer (I use different layers for track, flora, etc), they you'll defeat the purpose of using them.
Of course, your route will work fine regardless of what layer things are on, but if you want to create scenarios that use different objects, you need to be aware of what layers you are using.
Unfortunately, there is no indication of the current layer in Surveyor without having the layer tab open or clicking on properties for the object.
I have made several mistakes in this way, but getting the feel for layers now I don't make so many mistakes.
As for tutorials, I think you should check out the links provided, and do a lot of experimenting.
Have fun!
