It caused my comp to start lagging until I uninstalled it.
Funny, RailSim performs far better on my computer than TRS ever did, and thats with lighting, shadows and shaders and higher draw distances, VS trs with no shadows, not saying anything of the nonexistant shaders
The forums are unfriendly, and hard to navigate
Ill have to somewhat agree with you here, however thats what UKtrainsim and Train-Sim are for
and despite what it says on the back of the box, there is pretty much NO custom content. There is no way to easily download any content and if you ask or suggest custom content on the forums, the mods whine at you, lock your thread and tell you that they dont support custom content then tell you to buy their crummy route packs. Also, they want you to buy new routes for rediculous prices. Also there is a huge lack of US stuff, only UP that kinda sucks. Also, if you suggest that they make US stuff, you get flamed for suggesting US "rubbish" and told to go play a "crappy" game like trainz.(so i did)
Have you looked at
http://rail-sim.de/ alot of amazing custom content there. Justin Cornell has just released his GP38-2 on the TS file library.
For some quality reskins check my site
http://krs.gaurc.us/
For a vast variety of UK content check the UKTS file library
As for their route pack please explain how they are "Crummy"? It is nice to see a company put so much thought and research into a route like RSDL did with Isle of Wight, yes the 40 bucks is way over the top but thats more to do with the pathetic state of the US economy than anything else.
RSDL is a british company so of course their focus will be in the UK, thats a good thing in my opinion, atleast they will do it right, and we wont end up with the "Outback" Harlem line like in TRS.
Finally, the route building software is horrible compared to trainz.
Its just a matter of getting used to it, they are actualy very similar and you will be able to carry over most of your TRS experience, i tryed playing TRS a few days ago and found surveyor rather annoying, KRS has much better terrain sculpting tools, allowing your to use sizes from 5M to 500M, i dont know how i ever did without the smoothing tool either, the only major drawbacks in my opinion is tracklaying and the lack of a search feature.
Rail Sim is crap, the sound sucks, and the graphics suck.
Unbaised much?
I have some major problems with the sounds in RailSim but they are still far better than trainz, atleast the horn and engine sound doesnt fade in and out and there is doppler effect.
As a trainz user i dont see how you can say the graphics suck
It's really just a visual upgrade of MSTS. Until it gives a user friendly envionment, it will always be to the side. There is Justin Cornell's GP38-2 at
www.train-sim.com. That is the best piece of US content for it.
Have you even looked at the routebuilder? Miles ahead of the sorry excuse for one MSTS had.
I think YOU are the one who needs an unbiased look at the sims. Have you seen anything default for TS2009. They look much better than anything produced for KRS
www.railsimulator.com . Check
www.auran.com/ts2009 and
www.trainzdev fo much info on the bes Train Sim ever. It will not only look good, but it will have something Kuju can't touch, a user friendly environment.
Ummm yeah, im sure your all drooling over that excessively detailed SD40-2, but your missing the fact its only a normal mapping model, unless the Devs have truly lost their minds. Unless Auran is totally replacing the graphics engine it will be far from the "best train sim ever"
TRS2006 looks a lot better than KRS if you have downloaded anything good. There are many more content fo TRS because, it's designed for everyday people to create content for. KRS is HARD to create for, everything must be to precise guidelines. That is why many creators have come back to Trainz.
Quality over quantity, with the increase in graphics the content creation process becomes more difficult but the end result is worth it. True Kuju made a good few blunders in this area, but the real reason that TRS has more content is that it has been around
7 years and RailSim has been around just about 1 now.
MSTS II, I think will be the best looking, but I don't see as big of a user-friendly environment there when compared to TRS.
www.tsinsider.com I bet you'll be uninstalling KRS once you've got that and TS2009!
MSTS II will no doubt be the best sim, just take a look at Flight Sim X.
Auran and its ancient graphics engine can not compete with one of the best game design studio's in the world.
Even then i doubt ill be uninstalling KRS, i doubt however TRS will make the end of the year on my hard drive.
Ok so heres my semi unbiased opinion
I started out with TRS back at the release of 06, i found it quite entertaining and enjoyed building my own routes and eventually got into reskins and sound editing. However when i tryed to create long or detailed prototypical route my frame rates would crash into the single digits. I would spend over two hours sometimes just to get some screenshots, half that time was watching load screens, items caching, or watching a pretty train slideshow. running trains? forget about it, the only place i could do that was on low poly routes like Dermmy's Eastern Kentucky.
When RailSim came out i immidietly got a copy. As soon as i played it for the first time i knew i was hooked. Starting out in the immense and beutifully modeled trainshed in Paddington station which i had visited in the summer. I smoothly pulled my HST out of the station towards Oxford. I had tried running London-Reading in TRS but the lag was too bad to even try driving. I watched as london slid past, sat down in the MK3's and looked out the window, got caught out by the AWS detector.... As i watched trains go by from the station i could here the rails shake as the train approached, the sound of the train rolling under overpasses. As the train rolled through the countryside dark cloud appeared on the horizon then faded away back to blue. Pulling out of reading i marvelled at the shiny surfaces of the Class 43 which looked just like the real thing.
Mabye just as a railfan i like the graphics, but i think RailSim has real potential. Even now from that first day the game has substantialy improved with various third party fixes and addon content. It is hard for a sim to come in when two are already firmly established with dedicated supporters but i think RailSim has already gathered a small but talented group of users.
Im open to what the future brings, i know i will be purchasing MSTS II and if auran can substantially improve on TRS i may even buy TRS 09.
my 2 cents
