Yup, the number board is showing 49 which is the Train number not the locomotive number.
Train 49 was Chicago to San Francisco and named The Forty Niner Treasure Island Special.
In this case westbound locomotive 2906 would run from Chicago to Cheyenne where it would meet locomotive 7002. They would both turn around and 2906 would wait in Cheyene while 7002 would take Train 49 on to San Francisco. 7002 would return later in the month pulling Train 48 and 2906 would return it to Chicago.
I would love it if it was the 2-8-8-0 but the hints Steve has dropped seem to point to one of the streamliners, IMO.
That is a great shot of the 7848 NewYorkCentral! I haven't seen many pictures of the 4-8-2s wearing the two tone gray livery, that is why I'm wishing K&L not only does the 7002 but also the rest of the Class MT-1s and consider doing all four paint jobs.
BTW the 7848 would not have had UP on her cabside 7850-7864 were LA&SL locomotives although their tenders were marked Union Pacific. I'm not sure but I believe the marking on the tender rear would have been LA&SL too. The Union Pacific MT-1s were 7000-7039.
And, yes, I do dream big.
