The Cotton Belt Engine

The SP Engine.
They're not all that similar

Actually, they are.

The SP built 14 GS-1s in the early 30s, 10 delivered to SP and 4 to T&NO. Meanwhile SSW ordered 10 class L-1 4-8-4 types, which where built to be virtually identical to the SP engines. A second order was placed in 1937 for 10 more class L-1, this time though they where built by the Cotton Belts own Pine Bluff shops. Again, built to be nearly identical to the SP engines.

The most striking difference between the SP and SSW engines is the larger dome on top the L-1, and the air compressors being moved from under the footplate on the SP engines to just below the smokebox on the Cotton Belt engines. The pilot is also of a different design, notice the vertical "classical" style of the L-1 compared to the horizontal style more commonly found on the SP engines. Also notice the clamshell style smokestack on the GS-1, used on routes with snowsheds like Donner Pass.

They're different in traction, horse power, combustion chamber, firebox area, grate area, booster unit on trailing truck and driver diameter. there's a lot more to it guys.

They do have some interesting differences for sure. But its not a huge amount of differences. @daylighttrain-that is some very interesting info. I never knew the SP had any engines with roller bearings. I guess what i was getting at was the main structural components (ie, frame, boiler, cab, etc) weren't hugely different. Might have to try putting one of the GS-4 tenders with it now.

To dive deeper into it, SSW did order their L-1s to a slightly smaller specification than the GS-1s. Even so, the differences are so minute they would be unnoticeable to the untrained eye. The differences in performance are 5% or less.

For example:

GS-1 Driver Diameter: 73in | SSW L-1 Driver Diameter: 70in, Difference of 5%
GS-1 Tractive effort (without booster): 62,200 lbf | SSW L-1 Tractive effort: 61,564 lbf, Difference of 2%
GS-1 Firebox heating area: 4,858 sq ft | SSW L-1 Firebox heating area: 4,690 sq ft, Difference of 4%
GS-1 Firebox firegrate size: 90.2 sq ft | SSW L-1 Firebox firegrate size: 88.3 sq ft, Difference of 3%

Comparisons like this can be made for all the statistics. 5% will make little to no difference when operating.

Loving the SP GS-8, I did add one little detail to mine:

I don't know if the SP painted stars on the drivers of the GS-8 but I do like the look of them.

I'm a big fan of your engines, But i still have 1 question, How do you toggle the Different Cab views? It's a question i've been wanting to ask for a while.

But anyway, Im working on a route for a shot on NKP 587 at the Indiana Transportation museum. Expect to see it soon!

Press one to go to the interior, and then toggle the external views using the [ and ] keys. Same goes for any of my rolling stock that has interiors.

Nice screenshot @jackboy317

Steve, I emailed you for some tips on my own project.
Uh oh. I hope Steve no triggered

I was looking through this thread for the screenshots, and trainman7616 can you send me the mesh file because I wanna modify the NYC J3a to look like the LH Black Diamond. But if Steve isn't ok with that, I'm fine with it.

Pfft hahahaha the LV Black Diamond er thingy I did is my own mesh i made in Blender. I just made it another mesh in steves engine folder and loaded it via CCP.
