Imageshack starting to charge money..

:n:

Just got this e-mail from Imageshack;

A whole new look with a whole new goal!

Dear valued customer,
After much consideration and brainstorming we created the new ImageShack to give you the most value. Our goal is to provide you unlimited image sharing options, give you innovative features and an abundance of applications.
We are removing advertisements on the new ImageShack pages, allowing you to upload what you wish, and moving to a subscription based model. For a small amount each month you will enjoy using our innovative and modern product to satisfy your every image hosting and sharing need.

Now is your turn to try it. Happy uploading!
The ImageShack Team

Until Febuary 1st you will be able
to get a subscription for $1/month!

That is 50% off! Get it now.

Screw that. Anyone suggest a good, free image-hosting site that doesn't delete your images over time?

.

Host then post. Under 'my uploads' is all the images you've uploaded from that IP Address

Only any use if you have a fixed IP address. Totally useless for those of us on a dynamic IP address which is 99% of the UK, probably not got that problem in the US. Turn off the router here or loose the connection and you get allocated a different IP.

Hostthenpost delete your images if you don't use the account regularly (within 30 day I think). That's why you see broken links which is a pity, particularly when they are part of Forum posts with advice. A missing image can often make a helpful post totally useless.

I'm still using Imageshack and intend to carry on until they pull the plug, just on the off chance that they may not. Unlikely though.

I've also got a Photobucket account, so I'll go back to that. It's good, easy to use and still free.

BTW, the topic has been discussed elsewhere in the Forum here from post #55.

Thank you for that info, Deane. Lovely they are.

Malc,

We have DHCP here as well. Only big companies get to keep their static IP addresses. :)

Some ISPs can arrange a static IP for you if you ring them up and ask nicely. Others might charge a small one-time fee. For me, I think a dollar a month is reasonable; new UI is fast and sleek, uploads fast, simple links, lots of space and no compression. Will be sticking around with Imageshack.

Used Photobucket in the past but dumped them because they started ruining all my images by excessive compression.

try dropbox. during my sting at nfsw i made a bodykit thread, somebody recommended dropbox as a better alternative to photobucket.

edit: they noted that dropbox wont disable/delete for inactivity. forgot to mention that ><.

I'm surprised N3V don't offer complimentary in house storage for images on the forum (within reason). Many other forums such as TS.com do.

The alternative is to see whether your ISP offers any type of web/image hosting/clouding where you could upload your files and link to it.

No more free Imageshack

Tried an upload to Imageshack two days ago and it is now blocked. The Upload tab has been renamed Upgrade.
They have also succeeded in breaking some of my image links!:(

Photobucket still allows free uploads, so I'll go back to using that site.

Might be something wrong with your account, mezzoprezzo. I've got a free Imageshack account and the Upload option is still available to me.

Just had another look - looks like it's now a free 30-day trial. I have contacted them to tell them of my displeasure of this.

If you use Google, open up a GMail account with Google and use their image sharing for posting pictures. Easy, it is free and it works for me like the picture below:

If you're a Xfinity/comcast customer, the you can set us a personal web page that really doesn't need to do anything, but once you set it up, you can host pictures from there and it's free. That's where I host all of my pictures from.

Just bought a $20 annual subscription. Instant activation, fast, clean interface, no ads, unlimited storage, no compression, no complaints. :Y:
Pretty good value.

Shane,

Here's what I get with Imageshack. The Upload button has been replace with Upgrade.
I've tried clicking on the "30 day trial", but it just loops me back to this screen. :n:

Cheers

The above image is hosted by Photobucket, which still works as a free site, so I'm now back with them.

It's still cheeky of them though for a service that used to be free (and there are users who for whatever reason are unable to commit to a subscription).

I think what they've done is stepped up their game and realigning themselves as a better host because let's admit it Imageshack was very primitive in the past, their only redeeming quality was straightforward, no-nonsense, no-compression hosting.

As for Casper's disappearing trial-period, it's probably cause the trial automatically started in early Jan regardless of whether or not you logged in. The trial would've expired about 2 weeks ago.

Just changed to Photobucket too.

Actually, their web page and uploading process is a lot better than when I first tried them some years ago. Now just testing if it works;

Hmmm...it seems they automatically reduce the image size, and I can't see any settings that give you control over that. This was originally 1800 pixels wide. Maybe I need to look beyond Photobucket?

Deane,

There is a way of uploading and linking larger images. The one below, whilst not at large as your 1800, is bigger than 1024 which was my initial restriction.

Go into upload options (click the little cog in the top right corner of the upload dialogue box).

Under the automatically checked 1024x768 option there is a little box which you can tick marked, "Display my linked photos in their original size". This can then be saved.

I don't know if we need to do this for each upload. Hopefully it will stay permanently checked, even after cookie clearances and PC reboot.

Might be worth trying your image again at the full 1800. I'd be interested to see what happens.

Cheers
Casper
