Help Understanding Content

Hi all, newbie to TRS12. Trying to figure out the content capabilities. Let me know if this is right:

1) content can be downloaded on the website here from "Download Station"
- it seems like endless content on here, probably all great.
- how do I filter better? for example, how do I find the most popular or highly rated, downloaded routes? Right now it sorts by date, most recent first.
- How can I find the best content w/out downloading each one and trying it out? Seems like looking at a thumbnail, a short description, and the # of downloads is the only way?

2) content can also be downloaded using the "Content" section on game start menu.
- is this the same content as in the download station?

3) Content can/may mess up your build?
- I understand it not not validated by Auran so they cant say for sure if it will break your game

4) takes a long time.
- can be aided by a first class ticket
- if heard mixed reviews on this

Where else can we go to get free content? I remember with MSTS there were other forums where people posted content and details as to what each needed, dependencies etc.

Just trying to figure this out and hopefully share with other newbies.

Thx

The best way is to use CMP, below, since it contains many filters. The closest you're going to get to a content "rating" is to untick, say, anything below TRS2006. There is some good TRS2004 content and even below though so you'll miss some things using this filter.

Yes, but they are two different databases. Occasionally, something will appear in one but not the other due to them becoming out of sync.

The only one that I can think of offhand that was something of a problem was a route built for version 1.3 that would crash the game every time I tried to load it, but simply deleting it took care of that. Some content is more efficient than others, but I don't know of any that will break your game.

FCT is the way to go. I haven't heard any real "mixed reviews" aside from folks who object to paying as a matter of principle; that's an ongoing political debate. However, few people really have problems with the service itself, and, in most cases, it's on their end having a slow ISP. I mean, if you're on dialup, then you just can't download fast, FCT or not.

Checkrail.com, gaurc.us, trainzproroutes.org, steammachine.com, uslw.net, and jointedrail.com, metrorus.ru, tsmteam.ru, and trainzland.com are sources of great content, to name but a few, and depending on what you are into. In most cases, you need many if not most dependencies off the DLS though.

RRSignal - as always phenominal feedback! I prob wont be doing a ton of downloading (I say that now right). This is a great guide and a start in the right direction.

You're welcome. The thing about the FCT is it tends to spoil you. I tried a 3-month FCT and was hooked...then it became everyday, man. I...I just... :)

I don't mind buying because it supports my favorite addiction...ooops, I mean, hobby...and is pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things. But, you will get spoiled fast if you try the FCT.

bmheron, review your last post in 6 mos. I thought i wouldn't do much downloading either. My 2010 directory is about 22 gigs and my 2012 directory is about 18 gigs. I need a bigger harddrive

And that's why I got a 1TB hard drive exclusively for Trainz.
