Whoa some nice models here

Slave driver where do you get all your refernces from to build your models I Always have a hard time getting enough photos to build something like that.

It truly is amazing how some people can create such masterpieces with the same tools that the rest of us use to make ordinary objects.

<sigh>

That truly beats the built in one. That's not great work mate. That's AWESOME!

Cheers!

I would love to see it, but something tells me by the quality of that render in the model within, that the poly count would be so high that it would be impractical.

Now I could be wrong…:cool:

Thank everyone for the complements. I am very happy with the way that DD40 is turning out.

MAGLEVSX

My references for the DD40 consist of much research on the internet and books that I bought back in the early 1980's plus numerous trips to the Portola Rail Museum because they have one of these babies. (and it's only a 4 1/2 hour drive from my house) For some of my other projects I'll include Model Railroader Magazine, if I have a copy with an article on it, books with any info on the unit I happen to be working on and if I can find a museum with whatever I am working on, a personal visit to get detail pics and if possible measurements of the stuff that most people don't take pictures of. It also helps having a good eye for sizes and detail.

I'm not going to say what the poly count is right now because I'm not done. There is much mesh detail that will end up as texture detail before I'm done not to mention what will be lost on the first and second LOD levels. On the loco itself I'm about 95% done with mesh, mapping and texturing. The trucks are 100% done on the mesh except for the sanders and 60% on the mapping. I haven't done anything on the texturing except made a single color image for it. After that all I have left is the custom cab which I haven't started yet.

Like Fred said, "give my compliments to Guido73. I gotta get me some of those!":Y:

slave-driver, how long has it taken you so far to build this masterpiece?

Coming up on 3 years since I started it. I've also rebuilt it twice but I wasn't this far along when I did the rebuilds. For the last year I have been doing more train related things than Trainz so in all reality it's been on and off for 2 years.

Something different

Took some photos of this temple ("wat") at Nai Harn beach in Thailand recently. I naively thought I could do a 3D model of it, but it's proving to be a very difficult build.

I'm using lots of opacity planes to save polys and capture all the ornate curly bits (a pity that gmax doesn't render transparency very well in screenshots). At the same time I'm trying to cram all textures into just one composite image.

That complex roof is driving me bonkers at the moment. I must say it's not giving me a feeling of inner peace and harmony, but my respect for the builders has gone up immensely.

I thought I'd take a break from building and share a screenshot of progress so far...

G'day Dinorius_Redundicus,

Dean, try setting the 'Transparency Panel' (in the Viewport Settings Dialogue - RMB on the 'name' of the viewport [any will do]>configure) to the 'Blend' setting. This will give you the equivalent of 3DS Max's 'Best' setting for the same configuration. If I haven't explained where to go, give me a yell and I'll elaborate some more for you...

Jerker {:)}

Thanks Jerker.

Hmm..it seems that the setting was already on 'Blend'. And the 'in-gmax' view of those transparency surfaces is just as bad on my new computer as on the old one. But I'll stop trying to solve problems here, this is a screenies thread. PM me if you have any other thoughts.
