Just a question, is 5000 pollys ok for a shelter?

You are using Sketchup arent you?
I think 5000 polys are too many for a shed. It is advised that you export from sktchup a COLLADA fil of your model and import it in blender.
That should trim the polygons down and THEN xport it to trainz. (I like the way of giving advice to others that I cant follow:hehe:)

Depends. If it's the top level of detail on a complex shape, with lots of modelled 3D detail then it may be ok (could even be more if necessary). If it's 5000 and looks like a flat textured box then no. Current versions of Trainz can handle high poly counts where necessary for detail seen close up, but I would think that LOD is essential if you've got that many polys in a building. Read the recent thread about LOD for loads of useful advice on this. The key thing is to model efficiently, with just enough polys to get the look you require, and to make use of features such as normal maps to give the effect of fine detail.

John514's suggestion about Sketchup - Collada - Blender is a good one- I'm currently exploring the potential of making basic block models of specific buildings in Sketchup using Google Earth to give scale footprints, then exporting to Collada and importing into Blender for fine control over polys, texturing, shading and detail.

Well my version of it anyways.
