GMax and 3DSMax (And any other modeling program) screenies/renders

G'day matruck,

...that's a delightful sentiment, Mick but the applicatiion of the sign, in a way, detracts from the 'generic' suitability of the structure. However, that is a minor consideration. Before you proceed any further, might I suggest that you examine the 'scale' settings of the (I am assuming), weatherboard/clap-board texture applied to the walls in the door alcove and those applied to the 'walls' on the roof 'clerestory', so that they match the scale of the texture as it appears on the main wall...

Thanks Garry i noticed that too but it's only a place holder for the time being and i'll fix it later.
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=433009&nseq=30 That is the only pic i could find of this office and from above i have the building the right size so for now it'll have to do till i learn sum more stuff.

Zac lent me his US&S M-23 Switch Machine Mesh so i could model a Switch Heater that usually stands behind these baby's in the PRB Wyoming.
Cheers Mick.

G'day matruck,

...I wouldn't complain too much about the quality of that image, Mick! Even with my 'limited' knowledge of American Railroading photography, I can see that you have a "Mike Danneman" image there and even I will admit that I've had much worse to work with in the past...

...can I take it from your comment...

..."...so for now it'll have to do till i learn sum more stuff..."...

...that you don't know the process for adjusting the 'scale' of a texture on any individual polygon in 3dsMax? If that's the case, then I am more than willing to shed some light on this simple process for you...

...just let me know...

Honestly, I like the sign. Assuming were talking about the "Here are the worlds greatest Railroader's" Sign posted above the CNW marked door? In some ways, I think that sign is great and perfectly generic. It has no location on it that I can see, and though it tags the building as being rails related, so what? Not like there isn't loads of re-purposed Railroad Buildings around..... The CNW Tag is a bigger issue because if tried to plop that down say, in Boston, or on Donner Pass, suddenly theres this "Uhhhh, wait, what?" Moment when the user sees it....

Could someone please; explain to me how to use the exporter for 3DS Max? I want to learn how to use it, but I recognize that I am not the first. I wanted to ask the community before I started. I am also short on time, so the amount of time I can spend learning the importer is limited.

Garry if you wouldn't mind explaining this adjusting the scale of a texture in 3ds Max then i'd appreciate it.
Falcus the building was made with only that pic i showed from Railpics.com and that was from 199? when CNW were in the basin but UP have it now so i don't know if there are UP Shield's on the door but since the asset belongs in the PRB i wanted it too look as close to real as possible.
Cheers Mick.

G'day Falcus, marinemania & matruck,

@ falcus,

...don't get me wrong, here, Squire! I didn't, at any time, say that I disliked the sign! My comment was made (and should be 'taken') without any consideration of the aesthetics involved. When I first saw the image provided by "matruck", I saw a 'modern' Industrial Structure that had "potential" beyond the limited purpose for which it was intended...

@ marinemanioa,

...at the risk of being labelled "pedantic", one must first download and install the 3ds Max exporter in accordance with the instructions provided at the source of the file. Once this is accomplished, using it is relatively easy; with the "mesh" one wants to export open in 3ds Max, one simply clicks on the "File" menu and from the "Pop Up" list, one selects the "Export..." option, which opens up the Export Dialogue Box, from which you need to select the "Trainz .im/.kin" option (from the "Drop Down List" at the bottom of the box), supply a name for the file in the appropriate Input Box and click the [Export..] button. Greater detailed instructions on this process are also available at source of the the exporter file (although I am a great exponent of the "...suck it and see..." school and the subsequent "...if all else fails, RTFM..." method, in my experience, if the instructions are read beforehand, one rarely "fails")...

@ matruck,

...Mick, I would be more than happy to "enlighten" you but I do not believe we should do it, here. I see that you have a "Skype" account (which I also 'have' but haven't 'advised' Trainz, as yet) and since we are more or less "next door to each other", I will contact you in the near future via that process to discuss the matter (if I get a chance and a few free moments, this afternoon, I will do so during my regular visit the Model Railway Club). Wait for that call and we'll "take it from there"...

Making more progress on her, its time to really start working on the underside of the engine and all the pipes this engine has, especially on the opposite side with the air tanks.

Well after much struggling head scratching and quite a few colour-full expletive's i have actually completed what i set out to do a couple of day's ago. I've removed the arrow's so ya can see it a bit clearer.

Much thanks too Zac from East Coast Trains for his US&S M-23 Switch Machine Mesh and help and thanks to those who helped in my thread in the Content Creators section.
Cheers Mick.:)

@ n8phu:
I noticed that jacksonboro's banner now has 'The Erecting Hall' on it. Have you both teamed up on some project or was just a second pair of hands needed?

Whoa. What beauty have you made this time, Dan?
This in particular is an 8-22 C as ordered for the Carson & Colorado. I received drawings for this a couple days ago, and I decided I'm gonna go all out on her and make her payware. (hence all the nuts and washers and base plates on the pilot, and the high-poly compound curves on the drivers).

*Because this one set is going to be payware does not mean it will be terribly expensive or that I will be doing payware full-time. I will continue to mainly produce payware, but the really radical and annoying-to-set-up stuff that I've yet to try is probably going to be limited to payware models. Just a little disclaimer to help stop conflict.

The Lawley is now complete, it just needs some tenders now...

I love that, can't wait for it, the Lawley reminds me of the SAR Falcon F7. These engines are so beautiful! This is the kind of engine you make an entire route just for it!
